Pack Chaos
Pack Chaos
Marcus's cold words cut through the night like ice. "A family reunion," he said, his mouth twisted in a cruel smile.
Elias and Kael jumped to their feet. The letter from Kael's mother fluttered to the ground between them. Half-brothers? Their minds were still trying to understand this shocking truth.
"Stay back," Kael warned, pushing Elias behind him.
Marcus laughed. His eyes, once friendly, now glowed with an eerie light. "The great Alpha Kael, protecting his little Omega brother. How sweet."
More dogs appeared from the trees. Some looked angry, others confused. All of them were looking at Kael like they didn't know him anymore.
"You lied to us," growled Ada, one of Kael's oldest pack members. "Three hundred years of lies!"
"I did what I had to do," Kael said, his voice steady despite the hurt in his eyes. One red, one blue – both filled with sadness.
"An Alpha with Omega blood can't lead us," another wolf yelled. "It's against everything we believe!"
The pack began to split into groups. Some moved to stand with Marcus, while others stayed near Kael. Fights broke out as wolves pushed and snarled at each other.
"STOP!" Seraphina's words cut through the noise. She stood tall, her silver hair shining in the moonlight. "Fighting each other is exactly what the shadow creature wants!"
But the wolves were too angry to listen. One charged at Kael, teeth bared. Kael dodged, unwilling to fight back against his own pack member.
"See? He won't even defend himself like a true Alpha," Marcus sneered.
"That's because he has honor," Elias snapped, the Nightshade Grimoire clutched tightly in his hands. The book was warm against his ribs, almost like it had a heartbeat.
More wolves from other packs arrived, drawn by the sounds of fighting. The clearing was soon filled with growling, arguing wolves.
Elias looked around frantically. The pack was falling apart before his eyes. And somewhere in the forest, his father was still fighting the shadow thing that had been hiding inside Darius.
"We need to find the Temple of Light," Kael whispered to Elias. "Just like your father said."
"But how can we leave with everyone fighting?" Elias asked.
Before Kael could answer, a wolf named Thorne stepped forward. He was old, with gray streaks in his hair, but his eyes were sharp and wise.
"I have served under Alpha Kael for two hundred years," Thorne announced, his words cutting through the chaos. "In all that time, he has been fair, strong, and reliable. I don't care what blood runs through his veins. I care about his acts."
A few wolves nodded in agreement. Thorne's words seemed to calm some of the rage.
But Marcus wasn't finished. "Actions? Let's talk about acts. He hid his true nature. He broke our most sacred rules. And now we learn he's the half-brother of an Omega? The genes were supposed to stay pure!"
"Pure?" Elias's voice shook with anger. "Is that what you think this is about? Look at what your 'pure' ways have done! They've made you blind to the truth!"
Elias opened the Nightshade Grimoire to a page showing wolves of all kinds working together, their different-colored magics combining to create something wonderful.
"This is our true history," he said, holding the book up. "Before the split between Alphas and Omegas. Before the lies."
Some dogs moved closer, curious to see the book. But others backed away, as if afraid of what it might show.
Marcus lunged suddenly, grabbing for the book. "Enough of these lies!"
Kael moved faster than Elias had ever seen, knocking Marcus back with a strong blow. "Don't touch him!"
The book fell open to a new page. A map glowed on the yellowed paper, showing a road through mountains to a strange circular building.
"The Temple of Light," Seraphina gasped.
Suddenly, a terrible scream tore through the forest. All the wolves froze, turning toward the sound.
"Father," Elias whispered, his heart dropping like a stone.
A dark cloud rose above the trees in the distance. Lightning flashed inside it, blue and dangerous. The shadow creature was getting stronger.
"We're running out of time," Kael said quickly.
Marcus's eyes narrowed. "Running out of time for what? What aren't you telling us, Kael?"
"The shadow that possessed Darius isn't just any creature," Seraphina explained, trying to make the dogs understand. "It's old. Powerful. If we don't stop it, it will swallow everything – Alpha, Omega, all of us."
Some of the wolves looked scared now. Others still seemed angry, but at least they were listening.
"We need to reach the Temple of Light before the blood moon sets," Kael said, pointing to the sky where the red moon was slowly moving across the night. "Only there can we complete the binding and stop the shadow."
"Why should we trust you?" Ada demanded.
"Because I've protected this pack for three hundred years," Kael answered. "Yes, I hid part of myself. But everything I did was to keep you all safe."
A low rumble shook the ground. Trees swayed dangerously. In the distance, the dark cloud was growing, spreading like spilled ink across the sky.
"It's coming," Elias said, fear making his voice shake. "We need to go. Now."
Kael looked at his pack – wolves he had led and protected for ages. Some still looked at him with anger and betrayal. Others seemed uncertain. A few, like Thorne, stood firmly by his side.
"I won't force anyone to follow me," Kael said. "But Elias and I must reach the Temple of Light. The choice is yours."
He turned to leave, taking Elias's hand. Seraphina moved to follow them.
Marcus stepped in their path, his face twisted with rage. "You're not going anywhere. If you leave, you're no longer Alpha. You're nothing."
The words hung in the air like poison.
Kael's eyes – one red, one blue – flashed with pain. But his voice was calm when he spoke. "So be it."
He started to walk away, still holding Elias's hand. For a terrible moment, no one moved.
Then Thorne stepped forward. "I go where my Alpha goes."
One by one, other wolves joined them. Not all – many stayed with Marcus or simply melted away into the forest – but enough.
As they hurried toward the mountains shown on the map, following the way to the Temple of Light, a howl rose behind them. It wasn't a normal wolf yelp. It was twisted, wrong somehow.
Elias looked back in fear. Marcus stood at the edge of the clearing, his body twitching weirdly. Black lines crawled up his neck, across his face, into his eyes.
"The shadow," Kael whispered. "It's found a new host."
Marcus's mouth opened incredibly wide. When he spoke, it wasn't his voice anymore. It was the voice of the shadow thing.
"Run all you want," it called after them, the words echoing strangely through the trees. "I have waited ten thousand years. I can wait a little longer to claim what's mine."
Marcus's body began to change, getting larger, darker. His eyes turned totally black.
"What's happening to him?" Elias asked, terrified.
Kael's face was grim. "He's becoming the shadow's new host. And he's coming for us."
