Darius's Challenge
Darius's Challenge
Darkness swirled around Elias as he fell through the shadow doorway. He tried to scream, but no sound came out. Then suddenly—light.
He hit solid ground with a painful thud. Blinking away stars, Elias found himself not in the Black Temple as he'd feared, but in the middle of the pack's meeting grounds. Wolves of all ranks surrounded him, their faces shocked and scared.
Standing over him was Darius Frostveil himself.
"Welcome, little Omega," Darius said with a cold smile. His ice-blue eyes looked normal, but now Elias knew better. Something dark hid behind that human face.
"Where's my father?" Elias ordered, scrambling to his feet. His magic flickered weakly, drained from the portal trip.
"Safe," Darius said. "For now."
The crowd of wolves split as Kael burst through, Seraphina right behind him. Relief filled Elias's face.
"Step away from him," Kael growled, his golden eyes burning with anger.
Darius turned to the gathering pack, his voice suddenly loud and commanding. "Brothers and sisters of the moon! Today you witness history. The prophecy speaks of an Omega with the power of all elements—and here he stands!"
Whispers spread through the crowd. Elias could feel their eyes on him, some interested, some afraid.
"What do you want, Darius?" Kael demanded.
Darius smiled, showing too many teeth. "What is rightfully mine. By old pack law, I claim the right to court Elias Nightshade."
The crowd gasped. Elias felt his blood run cold.
"I've made no such claim," Kael said carefully.
"Haven't you?" Darius pointed to their hands. The bond mark was still visible, gold and blue light swirling beneath their skin. "That mark tells a different story."
"This is ridiculous," Seraphina snapped. "My brother isn't some prize to be won."
"Ancient law disagrees," Darius said. From his pocket, he pulled out an old, yellowed paper. "The Treaty of Lunar Bonds, signed by all packs three hundred years ago. When two Alphas desire the same Omega, they must fight for the right to court."
An elderly wolf with gray fur stepped forward, looking at the scroll. "He speaks true," the old wolf said reluctantly. "The law is clear."
"I'm not fighting you," Kael said to Darius. "This is a trick."
"Refuse, and you break pack law," Darius said loudly. "Break pack rule, and you—and the Nightshades—become outcasts. Is that what you want for your precious Omega? To be hunted by all packs?"
Elias looked around at the gathering wolves. Many nodded in agreement with Darius's words. Ancient rules were sacred to their kind.
"Kael," Elias whispered, moving closer to him. "We know what he is. We can't do this."
"We don't have a choice," Kael answered softly. "Not yet." Then louder, he said, "I accept your challenge, Darius Frostveil."
The crowd broke in excited howls. Fighting for mates was rare but thrilling to watch.
"Excellent," Darius said. "The combat will take place at moonrise." He turned to Elias with a smile that sent shivers down his spine. "Prepare to witness true Alpha strength, little Omega."
"This is madness," Seraphina hissed as Darius walked away. "You can't fight him, Kael. If he's really taken by a shadow creature, he'll have powers you can't match."
"I know," Kael said sadly. "But refusing would turn the entire pack against us. We need time to figure this out."
Elias grabbed Kael's arm. "My father—he's still out there. And Marcus—" "Will return to his master," Kael finished. "We need to be ready."
The old wolf who had confirmed the rule approached them. "Alpha Stormcrest," he said with a small bow. "The elders wish to speak with you before the fight."
"Of course," Kael said. He squeezed Elias's hand briefly. "Stay with your sister. I'll find you before moonrise."
As Kael walked away, Elias felt his loss like a physical pain. Their binding mark faded slightly, the gold light fading.
"Come on," Seraphina said, pulling him toward their tent. "We need to talk."
Inside their tent, Seraphina paced back and forth. "This is bad, Elias. Very bad."
"You think I don't know that?" Elias snapped. "Darius has Dad, and now he's going to kill Kael too."
"Maybe not," Seraphina said, stopping suddenly. "The vision you shared with Kael—you saw the real Darius trapped inside the shadow creature, right?"
Elias nodded. "Parts of him, at least. Why?"
"What if we could reach him? The real Darius?"
Elias stared at his sister. "How? The shadow's been controlling him for ages."
"Your magic," she said. "The bond mark. It connected your mind to Kael's—what if it could do the same with Darius?"
Hope fluttered in Elias's chest. "It's worth a try. But I'd need to touch him—"
The tent flap opened, and a young wolf with brown fur entered. "Excuse me," she said nervously. "Alpha Frostveil requests Elias's presence."
Seraphina stepped forward protectively. "Why?"
"Tradition," the young wolf explained. "Before combat, both Alphas must present their intentions to the Omega."
"I'll go," Elias said, ignoring Seraphina's warning look. "This might be our only chance."
"Be careful," Seraphina whispered.
Elias followed the young wolf across the camp. Wolves stopped and stared as he passed. Some bowed their heads respectfully—a rare move toward an Omega.
Darius waited in the main tent, a grand building of animal hides and wooden poles. He sat on a carved chair, looking every bit the powerful Alpha.
"Leave us," he commanded the young wolf, who quickly vanished.
Elias stood tall, unwilling to show fear. "You wanted to see me?"
"Indeed." Darius rose and circled Elias slowly. "Such power in such a small package. Your father had the same spark, you know."
Elias's heart jumped. "You've seen him recently?"
"Oh yes," Darius smiled. "He's quite stubborn. Like father, like son, I guess."
"What do you really want?" Elias asked. "We both know this isn't about courting me."
Darius laughed, a sound like ice breaking. "Smart boy. No, this is about something much older. The forecast. 'When shadow and light join, ancient chains shall shatter.' Your binding with Kael risks everything."
"Because you're the shadow the prophecy warns about," Elias said confidently.
Darius's eyes flashed red for just a second. "Clever Omega. Yes, the thing you glimpsed in your vision is part of me now. We are one."
"And my father?"
"Insurance," Darius said simply. "Tonight, when I defeat Kael, you will come with me gladly. Or your father dies."
Elias saw his chance. He stepped forward, reaching for Darius's arm as if begging. "Please, just let me see him—"
As his fingers touched Darius's skin, Elias pushed his magic through the contact. Blue light sparked between them.
Darius hissed, jerking back—but not before Elias caught a glimpse inside his mind. A dark room. A man with silver-streaked hair chained to a wall. And something else—a circle of glowing runes circling a stone altar.
"Clever trick," Darius growled, his voice suddenly deeper. His eyes turned totally black, then back to blue. "But not clever enough."
He grabbed Elias's throat, pulling him off the ground. "Perhaps I should kill you now and be done with it."
"The packs would turn against you," Elias gasped. "You need their support."
Darius's grip stiffened for a moment, then he dropped Elias to the floor. "Tonight, little Omega. After I kill your Alpha, you'll beg to come with me."
Elias scrambled away, rubbing his throat. "Kael is stronger than you think."
"We shall see." Darius turned away. "Now get out."
Elias ran back to his tent, his mind racing. Seraphina looked up as he burst in.
"It worked," he panted. "I saw Dad. He's living, in some kind of dark room. And there's an altar with runes—"
"The blood ritual," Kael's voice came from behind him.
Elias spun around. Kael stood in the door, his face grim. His golden eyes looked tired, and there was a new scar on his face.
"What happened to you?" Elias asked.
"The elders," Kael said shortly. "Some believe I've already broken pack law by forming a bond with you before the proper courting."
"Can they stop the fight?" Seraphina asked hopefully.
Kael shook his head. "No. It's set for moonrise." He looked at Elias. "What's this about a blood ritual?"
Elias explained what he'd seen in Darius's mind. "There was an altar surrounded by runes, and—"
A horn blew outside, its deep sound booming through the camp.
"It's time," Kael said quietly.
"You can't fight him," Elias said desperately. "He's not human anymore. He'll kill you."
Kael touched Elias's cheek gently. "I have to try. For you. For all of us."
As they walked to the fighting sites, Elias felt like his heart might burst from fear. The entire pack had gathered in a big circle. In the middle stood Darius, his silver hair gleaming in the rising moonlight.
"Remember what we practiced," Kael whispered to Elias. "Control your magic. And whatever happens, stay with Seraphina."
"Kael, wait—" Elias began, but it was too late.
Kael stepped into the circle. The two Alphas faced each other as the moon rose above the trees.
"Begin!" shouted the older wolf.
The fight started faster than Elias could follow. Both Alphas moved with supernatural speed, claws extended, teeth bared. Blood sprayed on the ground as they struck blows.
At first, they seemed closely matched. But then Darius began to change. His movements became faster, more flowing. His eyes flashed red more frequently.
"He's using the shadow's power," Seraphina whispered in fear.
Kael was losing ground. A deep gash appeared across his chest. Another across his back. He stumbled.
Elias couldn't watch anymore. He rushed forward, ignoring Seraphina's cry.
"Stop!" he yelled, throwing himself between the two Alphas.
Darius froze, his clawed hand inches from Elias's face. The crowd gasped.
"What is this?" Darius snarled. "The Omega interrupts sacred combat?"
"I challenge the combat itself," Elias said loudly, his voice carrying to all corners of the gathering. "By ancient law, an Omega has the right to reject all suitors."
The crowd murmured in wonder. Darius's face clouded with rage.
"Is this true?" someone called out.
The elder wolf stepped forward, looking worried. "It is an old law, rarely invoked, but—"
"Enough!" Darius roared. His control slipped further, shadows whirling around his feet. "The combat has started. It must be finished."
"No," Elias said firmly. He raised his hand, blue fire dancing across his fingers. "I reject you, Darius Frostveil. I choose Kael Stormcrest."
For a moment, the night was perfectly still. Then Darius began to laugh—a terrible sound that made the wolves back away in fear.
"You think it's that simple?" he said. His skin began to ripple, black seeping through like ink. "You think ancient laws can protect you from me?"
The shadows around him grew, swallowing his body until only his glowing red eyes remained visible.
"I am older than your laws," the shadow creature hissed with Darius's mouth. "I am older than your packs, your kind, your world."
Wolves screamed and ran as the shadow spread, reaching out with tendrils of darkness.
Kael pulled Elias back, standing protectively in front of him. "Run," he ordered.
But Elias stood his ground. "No," he said. "We fight together."
Their binding mark flared beautifully as their hands joined. Gold and blue light formed a shield around them as the shadow thing that was Darius lunged forward.
The last thing Elias saw before light and shadow collided was the pure terror on the faces of the pack—and the strange, pleased smile on Darius's shadow-covered face, as if this was exactly what he had wanted all along.
