Chapter 180 A New Beginning

Chapter 180 A New Beginning

Kathy's POV

I stood before the tall, silver-framed mirror in my quarters, staring at the reflection looking back at me. For the longest time, looking into a mirror had been a source of quiet dread, a reminder of the fragile, defenseless human girl who didn't belong in a world of apex predators.

But today, everything was different.

I lifted my right hand, palm upward, and smiled as a rhythmic, comforting warmth began to bloom beneath my skin.

I could feel my powers humming perfectly in my hand—no longer a volatile, fracturing curse, but a beautifully synchronized extension of my own soul.

I let out a soft breath, and as I did, my irises violently shifted, the normal gray melting away into a vibrant, striking electric blue.

I had a wolf now. She was right there, curled up comfortably in the center of my newly awakened core, her majestic spirit breathing in perfect tandem with my own.

The ink-black veins of the shadow entity were gone, replaced by the brilliant, clean frequency of a royal primary-line bloodline.

"You look absolutely beautiful, sweetheart."

I turned my head to see my mother leaning against the doorframe. Mum’s eyes were shining with an unyielding, fierce pride, her long auburn hair falling over her shoulders in soft waves.

Dad was standing right behind her, his massive, broad-shouldered frame casting a warm, protective shadow into the room, his jaw relaxed into a proud smile.

Mum walked over, wrapping her arms around my shoulders from behind and pressing a tender kiss against my temple.

"I meant what I said in the woods, Kathy," she whispered, her voice laced with the absolute gravity of an Alpha mother's vow. "I am never leaving your side again. We are a pack, and we face whatever comes next together."

"I know, Mom," I smiled, leaning back into her warmth, feeling an overwhelming sense of security I hadn't felt since arriving at this academy. "I'm not afraid anymore."

A few minutes later, I stepped out of my room and into the grand, sunlit hallway of the main dormitory block.

The transformation of the campus was staggering. The chaotic whiteout of the blizzard had completely receded, replaced by the crisp, golden clarity of a perfect winter morning.

Did I mention Professor Halloway was fast recovering too?

The frantic, piercing blare of the Class-Zero lockdown sirens had been silenced days ago. As I walked down the corridor, the rhythmic chatter of students filled the air.

Students were hurrying past with heavy textbooks clutched to their chests, arguing about upcoming tactical exams, and laughing freely.

The ancient fortress of Mooncrest Academy had pulled itself back together, order completely restored from the inside out.

As I rounded the corner toward the administrative courtyard, I spotted Zayden. He was eaning casually against a stone pillar, his arms crossed over his chest.

But he wasn't looking at me; he was staring intently down the length of the adjacent hallway.

I walked up beside him, tilting my head. "Zayden? What are you looking at?"

He didn't answer immediately. He just offered a subtle, knowing tilt of his chin toward the end of the corridor. I followed his gaze, and for the very first time, I looked properly at Alpha Steele—Riven’s father.

The legendary, battle-hardened commander of the vanguard lines looked different today. His rigid, military posture seemed a little less severe, his sharp eyes softened by a profound humility. He was standing face-to-face with Riven.

"I heard everything that happened in the clearing," Alpha Steele’s deep, gruff voice carried down the quiet hallway. He cleared his throat, his hands resting on his tactical belt as he looked his son square in the eyes. "And I need to apologize to you, Riven. For years, I pushed you too hard. I demanded perfection because I thought it was the only way to make you strong enough to survive this world. I was wrong. You didn't need my cruelty to become a leader."

Riven stood perfectly still, his amber eyes wide with a stunned, uncharacteristic silence.

"Alpha Aiden and Lady Malia have officially recognized and rewarded your actions, as well as Zayden's," Alpha Steele continued, a genuine, deeply entrenched pride breaking through his stern features. "I have never felt more proud to call you my son, Riven."

Riven’s jaw tightened, an emotional weight flashing through his eyes. Slowly, tentatively, Riven extended his right hand, intending to offer his father a formal, respectful military handshake.

But Alpha Steele didn't take the hand.

Instead, the veteran commander stepped forward, his massive arms reaching out to pull Riven into a tight, fierce, and emotional fatherly hug.

Riven froze in absolute shock for a fraction of a second, his hand hovering in the air, before his shoulders completely dropped. He wrapped his arms around his father, hugging him back with a quiet, long-overdue relief.

When Alpha Steele finally pulled away, he cleared his throat roughly, adjusting his collar to hide his emotion.

He turned back, his sharp eyes instantly spotting Zayden and me watching from the pillar. A look of deep respect crossed his face. He offered me a polite, formal nod of his head, then looked back at his son.

"I will excuse myself," Steele murmured, offering a rare, genuine smile. "Go on."

He walked past us down the hall, his heavy boots echoing rhythmically against the stone. The moment his father was out of earshot, Zayden let out a loud, boisterous laugh that practically shook the dust from the ceiling arches.

"Well, I'll be damned," Zayden laughed, shaking his head as Riven walked over to us, his face a hilarious mixture of utter bewilderment and quiet happiness. "The great Alpha Steele, giving out hugs? I think the apocalypse actually happened and we just missed it."

"Shut up, Zayden," Riven muttered, rolling his eyes, but a soft, radiantly happy smile tugged at the corner of his lips as his hand found mine, his warm fingers instantly locking securely with my own.

Later that afternoon, the crisp winter air was perfectly countered by the cozy, roaring hearth of the campus cafe.

We were sitting at a large, rustic wooden table near the panoramic glass windows, the table cluttered with steaming mugs of hot chocolate, coffee, and half-eaten pastries.

Gathered around us were the people who had survived the madness right alongside us: Abby, Amaya, Lina, and Kai.

The atmosphere was incredibly light, the remaining threads of tension finally unraveling. Amaya sat across from me, her fingers tracing the rim of her coffee mug.

She looked up, her eyes completely clear of the defensive, territorial edge they used to carry.

"Kathy, I want to apologize," Amaya said softly, her voice filled with a sincere, heartfelt vulnerability that instantly drew the table’s attention. "For everything. For making you feel unwelcome, and for letting my own insecurities make you feel jealous. Riven has always been my best friend—my brother, really—and when you showed up, I was just so terrified that he was going to focus entirely on you and leave me behind in the dark. It wasn't fair to you."

I smiled warmly, reaching across the table to gently pat her hand. "It's okay, Amaya. I understand. Truly."

Amaya let out a relieved laugh, her cheeks flushing a light pink. "Well, if it makes you feel any better, the pressure is officially off Riven. I actually started dating a human guy from America. He doesn't know a single thing about Alpha frequencies or werewolf politics, and honestly? It is the most refreshing thing in the world."

The table erupted into a chorus of teasing groans and laughter. Right beside her, Abby cleared her throat, her expression turning quiet and genuinely apologetic.

"I need to apologize too, Kathy. For the bullying, and for how I treated you when you first arrived. Being twisted up in Vespa's shadow clone made me realize how easily darkness takes root when you're bitter. I've changed, or at least, I'm trying to."

"We're all figuring it out, Abby," I said, my voice steady and forgiving. "The past is dead. Let's keep it that way."

The final lingering shadows completely evaporated, replaced by a chorus of clinking mugs and shared laughter.

Kai was busy stealing one of Lina's pastries, earning himself a sharp swat to the back of his hand, while Lina ignored him entirely, sliding down the booth to wrap me in a suffocatingly tight, enthusiastic hug.

Lina pulled back, her eyes twinkling with excitement as she rested her elbows on the table. "So, now that you've officially unleashed your inner wolf, saved the academy, and defeated a literal first-era entity... are you going to write a book about all of this like your mum did? Trust me, it’d be an absolute bestseller!"

I let out a bright, breathless laugh, leaning back against the plush leather cushions of the booth.

I looked at the sunlight reflecting off the surface of my coffee, feeling the peaceful hum of the world around me.

"No," I laughed, shaking my head with absolute certainty. "I think this is the end. No more books. Let's just focus on surviving Mooncrest College."

Everyone nodded in cheerful agreement, raising their mugs in a loud, chaotic toast.

Beside me, Zayden shifted his massive frame, draping a heavy, familiar, and fiercely protective arm around my shoulders to draw me closer, while Riven held my hand under the table, his thumb tracing warm, soothing circles over my knuckles.

I smiled, looking at all of them talk, joke, and laugh under the bright afternoon sun.

You know…

My life here in Mooncrest had been a disaster from the beginning, but being stuck with the two alphas beside me was the best thing ever.
