Chapter 47

Elara’s breath was a shallow, uneven whisper in the dark. The Abyss pulsed around her, a void both endless and crushing, a prison without walls. Every movement felt sluggish, like wading through thick oil, and yet the air burned against her skin, carrying whispers that weren’t her own.

Draven stood just beyond reach, his presence an extension of the Abyss itself. His dark armor gleamed dully in the eerie glow, the lines of his face impossibly sharp against the shifting void. He looked at her the way a man looks at something he already owns.

“You feel it, don’t you?” His voice was silk wrapped around steel. “The weight of it. The pull.”

Elara clenched her fists. “I feel nothing.”

Draven laughed—a deep, knowing sound that sent a shudder through the space around them. “Liar.”

She wanted to move, to strike, to break this cursed silence, but the Abyss coiled around her ankles, holding her in place.

“You think this is a cage,” Draven murmured, stepping closer, his shadow merging with the abyssal dark. “But it isn’t. It’s power. It’s freedom.”

Elara’s jaw tightened. “Your idea of freedom is nothing but chains.”

Draven tilted his head, studying her. “And yet, you’re still here.”

The words struck something deep, something she refused to name.

A memory surfaced.

A Promise in the Ashes

Years ago. Firelight flickered against the ruins of a battlefield. The scent of charred wood and blood filled the air. Elara knelt beside Leon, pressing a cloth against the wound on his shoulder.

“You’re an idiot,” she muttered, frustration and fear lacing her voice.

Leon grinned, despite the pain. “I’ve heard.”

Elara glared at him, but there was no real anger in it. Just exhaustion. Just something too fragile to name.

His golden eyes softened. “You know I’d follow you anywhere, right?”

She stilled, fingers hovering over his wound.

The words were too much. Too real.

She shoved him lightly, breaking the moment. “Then stop getting stabbed, idiot.”

He only laughed.

\---

The memory faded, but the weight of it remained.

Elara sucked in a slow breath, forcing the Abyss from her mind, from her body.

Draven watched her with something like curiosity. “You think of him.”

She lifted her chin. “I think of many things.”

He smiled, but there was no warmth in it. “Lies will not protect you here.”

The shadows surged forward.

\---

The Battle for the Living

The sky was split with fire.

Leon drove his sword into the shifting flesh of the Voidborn, twisting hard as the creature howled. Black ichor spilled from the wound, hissing against the scorched ground. Around him, what remained of the warriors fought with the desperation of the damned.

They were losing.

The battlefield had been a warzone, now it was a graveyard. Bodies—human and otherwise—littered the ruins. Smoke curled in the air, thick with the scent of blood and something fouler.

Leon’s breath was ragged, his body screaming in protest. He had fought for hours, but it wasn’t enough. Nothing they did was enough.

Elara was gone.

No.

Not gone.

Taken.

His grip tightened on his sword. He refused to accept this.

A movement to his right—Cassian, his face streaked with soot and blood, barely holding his ground. His long coat was torn, his left arm limp at his side.

Leon reached him in two strides, cutting down the shadowed creature lunging for him. “You’re bleeding.”

Cassian huffed a breathless laugh. “You just noticed?”

Leon ignored the quip. “We can’t keep this up.”

Cassian’s expression darkened. “I know.” He glanced toward the ridge where Elara had vanished. “But you’re not leaving, are you?”

Leon exhaled sharply. “I can’t.”

Cassian was silent for a moment, then nodded. “Then we make a path.”

Leon met his gaze. “For her?”

Cassian smirked. “For her.”

The Abyss Stirs

Elara braced herself as the shadows closed in.

The Abyss shifted, its form ever-changing, and for a moment, she thought she saw something—no, someone—hidden in the folds of darkness. A figure, familiar and distant all at once.

A woman.

The shape flickered, indistinct. But Elara knew those eyes, even if she had never seen them before.

Not in this life.

A whisper curled through the dark, slipping beneath her skin.

“Wake up.”

The shadows convulsed.

And then Elara fell.

\---

Leon’s Reckoning

The Voidborn shrieked, its form unraveling under the weight of magic and steel.

Leon didn’t stop. He couldn’t.

His body was failing, exhaustion clawing at the edges of his mind, but he refused to stop.

And then—

A shift.

The battlefield trembled, the air itself distorting. A crack in the fabric of reality split open before them, dark and endless.

The Abyss.

Leon’s heart slammed against his ribs.

“Elara.”

Cassian grabbed his arm. “Leon, wait—”

Too late.

Leon ran.

Straight into the dark.
