Chapter 147 The Woman They Couldn't Break
Chapter 147 The Woman They Couldn't Break
The office remained silent.bNeither Alessandro nor Luca reached for the folder immediately. Some truths demanded preparation. Luca finally broke the silence. "I haven't opened it."
Alessandro looked up. "You waited."
"It wasn't my story to read first."
For a long moment, Alessandro simply stared at the plain black folder resting on his desk. No title. No classification stamp. Just a single coded label. Asset T. He slowly opened it. The first page contained a photograph. Lucia recognized her instantly. Even after thirteen years. Tatiana.
She looked younger than the woman Lucia remembered, but the same calm intelligence remained in her eyes. Dark hair tied neatly behind her head. A small scar above her left eyebrow. The gentle smile that had somehow survived a world determined to erase it. Beneath the photograph were only three words. Operational Instructor. Luca frowned. "Instructor?"
Alessandro continued reading. "They recruited her." The room grew even quieter.
Years earlier...Tatiana Volkov had not entered the trafficking network as a prisoner. She had entered as an employee. The file revealed that she had been a gifted linguist and psychologist recruited to assess children who possessed unusual abilities. Memory. Languages. Observation. Pattern recognition.
Children who could eventually become spies.
Couriers. Forgers. Negotiators. Living weapons. Tatiana's responsibility had been simple. Identify talent. Recommend placement. Maximize value. According to the organization...She excelled. Until Lucia Romano arrived.
The next report carried a different tone.
Subject L-9 displays exceptional eidetic memory. Linguistic acquisition significantly exceeds projections. Psychological resistance remains unusually high. Instructor Tatiana Volkov assigned as primary behavioral specialist.
Alessandro turned another page. Neither man spoke. The reports changed month by month. Behavioral compliance below acceptable levels.
Subject continues resisting conditioning.
Instructor requests extended observation period.
Then...Instructor reports emotional attachment compromising objectivity.
Luca looked up. "There." He pointed to the final sentence. "That's when they noticed." Alessandro nodded. "They believed Tatiana had become compromised."
Another page followed. This report had been written by someone else.
Recommendation: Remove Instructor Volkov.
Reason: Displays excessive empathy toward high-value assets.
The wording made Alessandro's stomach turn. High-value assets. Not children. Another report.
Recommendation denied.
Instructor remains uniquely effective with resistant subjects.
Luca frowned. "They kept her because she produced results."
"No." Alessandro's voice remained quiet. "They kept her because Lucia trusted her."
The reports became increasingly hostile.
Instructor observed providing unauthorized comfort.
Instructor interrupted disciplinary procedure.
Instructor supplied additional food without authorization.
Instructor questioned operational directives.
Each violation appeared insignificant by itself. Together...They formed the profile of a woman quietly rebelling from inside. Luca stopped at a handwritten note attached to one report. Unlike the typed documents, this sentence had been scribbled in dark blue ink.
Volkov continues confusing compassion with weakness.
There was no signature. Only initials. R.O.
Rafael Ortega. Alessandro memorized the handwriting. One day...He intended to place those pages before a judge.
The next document carried a bright red classification banner. Internal Security Investigation. Luca continued reading aloud.
"Unauthorized movement of Subject L-9."
"Failure to report escape opportunity."
"Possible collaboration with external actors."
He looked toward Alessandro. "This is when she helped Lucia disappear." Alessandro nodded. "And they started hunting her." The investigation continued for nearly forty pages. Surveillance photographs. Financial audits. Interrogation summaries. Nothing proved Tatiana's betrayal. Because she had been extraordinarily careful. Until the final report.
The room became completely still. Alessandro read every word without interruption.
Instructor Tatiana Volkov knowingly assisted Subject L-9 in escaping organizational custody.
Instructor facilitated the disappearance of additional juvenile subjects.
Instructor established contact with unknown resistance network.
Operational value permanently compromised.
Then came the final recommendation.
Disposition: Elimination authorized.
Approval Signature: Rafael Ortega
Date: Thirteen years earlier.
Luca slowly removed his glasses. "So it was him." Alessandro closed the folder. "No." He looked toward the window. "It was all of them."
At that same moment, Lucia sat beneath an oak tree in the estate gardens. Several rescued children surrounded her. Not because anyone had asked them to. Because they felt safe beside her.
Doctor Matteo had insisted she spend time outdoors. Fresh air. Sunlight. Peace. The baby seemed calmer whenever she relaxed. Sofia sat close enough that their shoulders almost touched. "What was she like?"
Lucia smiled immediately. "Tatiana?" Sofia nodded.
Lucia looked toward the blue sky. Thinking. Remembering. "She never made promises she couldn't keep." The children listened carefully. "If she told you breakfast would come..." Lucia laughed softly. "...then somehow breakfast appeared. If she said your fever would break..." She gently brushed a loose strand of hair behind Sofia's ear. "...you believed her."
Daniel spoke for the first time. "Was she brave?" Lucia shook her head. "Bravery wasn't what impressed me."
"What was?"
Lucia's eyes grew distant. "She remained kind." The children waited. "It's surprisingly easy to remain kind when life is gentle." Her voice softened. "The miracle is remaining kind when life gives you every reason not to."
None of the children spoke after that. Because every one of them understood exactly what she meant.
Back inside the operations center, another analyst hurried toward Luca. "We've decrypted another section." Luca accepted the tablet. "What is it?"
"The execution order wasn't the end."
He frowned. "What do you mean?" The analyst enlarged the final page.
Beneath the authorization for Tatiana's execution appeared another instruction.
Recover all associated materials.
Priority One: Blue Ribbon.
Luca blinked. "The ribbon?" The analyst nodded. "It wasn't sentimental." She pointed toward another line.
Item believed to contain concealed intelligence. Recovery mandatory.
Alessandro and Luca looked at one another simultaneously. Neither spoke. The faded blue ribbon that had passed from Tatiana...
To Lucia...To Marco...To Sofia... Had never merely been a symbol of hope. Someone inside the trafficking network had believed it concealed something worth killing for. And somehow...For thirteen years...No one had ever found it.
