Chapter 143 The Child They Refused To Leave Behind
Chapter 143 The Child They Refused To Leave Behind
The flames consuming the Veracruz estate painted the night sky in shades of crimson and gold. Smoke rolled across the valley, illuminated by collapsing walls and the intermittent flash of electrical transformers giving their final sparks before darkness claimed the compound completely.
Marco slowed down as he and the four operatives approached the northern maintenance building. Unlike the mansion, this structure remained untouched by the collapse. Its concrete walls were scarred by age rather than explosions. Its windows were narrow. Reinforced. Built to keep people inside rather than to admire the view outside.
Marco crouched behind a cluster of overgrown shrubs and studied the building through compact binoculars. "There." One operative followed his line of sight. A single security light burned above the entrance. Two armed guards stood outside. Neither appeared particularly alarmed. One smoked a cigarette while the other occasionally glanced toward the distant inferno consuming the estate.
"They haven't received evacuation orders," the operative whispered. Marco shook his head. "They've received different orders." He watched the guards more carefully. They weren't protecting the building from intruders. Their attention remained fixed on the door behind them. Protecting something or someone inside.
He quietly activated his radio. "Luca." The intelligence officer answered immediately. "We're listening." Marco transmitted live images from a camera mounted on his helmet. Luca enlarged them on the command center monitors. Alessandro stepped closer.
"Can you access the building plans?"
Luca searched through the files copied from the compound's servers. Within seconds, a faded architectural drawing appeared. His expression darkened. "It isn't a maintenance building."
"What is it?"
"A medical isolation facility."
Marco remained silent. Luca continued reading. "There are six isolation rooms." A pause. "And one surgical suite." Nobody in the command center liked the sound of that. Alessandro spoke quietly. "If Sofia is anywhere..."
"She's there," Marco finished. He believed it. Not because of certainty. Because instinct had saved his life too many times to ignore it now.
Inside the building, Doctor Emil Vargas removed his bloodstained gloves. He had served the organization for nearly eleven years. In the beginning, he had convinced himself he was helping abandoned children. That illusion had died quickly. Cowardice had kept him there.
Tonight, cowardice had finally run out of places to hide. He looked through the observation window into Isolation Room Four. A little girl lay sleeping beneath a thin blanket. Sofia. She had developed a high fever two days earlier. The compound physician had ordered her moved into isolation.
The collapse had happened before anyone remembered to retrieve her. Vargas closed his eyes. No. That wasn't true. They remembered. Rafael Ortega had simply chosen not to care. A pounding echoed against the front entrance. One of the guards shouted. "Doctor."
Vargas looked up. "What?"
"We've been told to prepare for evacuation."
"When?"
"As soon as transportation arrives."
The doctor looked once more toward Sofia. He knew exactly what evacuation meant. Witnesses. Loose ends. Children who knew too much. He had signed enough death certificates over the years to recognize the pattern. His hands began trembling. For the first time in eleven years...He made a decision.
Outside, Marco observed one of the guards unlocking the entrance. A black utility vehicle approached from the eastern road. It stopped beside the building. Three armed men stepped out. None wore security uniforms. They wore tailored suits. One carried a metal briefcase.
Marco immediately photographed their faces. Luca performed facial recognition. His voice sharpened. "Consortium retrieval team." Alessandro's expression hardened. "They're here for the archives."
"No." Luca enlarged another photograph. "The briefcase contains biometric storage equipment."
Marco understood before Luca finished speaking. "They're here for survivors."
Doctor Vargas heard the new arrivals before he saw them. The leader entered briskly. "Status."
Vargas forced himself to remain calm. "One patient."
The man frowned. "I was informed there were six."
"There were."
"What happened?"
"The others were transferred before the collapse." The lie came easily.
The man looked toward Isolation Room Four.
"Age?"
"Seven."
The visitor nodded once. "Terminate." The word landed like a hammer. Vargas remained frozen. "I'm sorry?"
The man looked irritated. "You heard me." He placed the briefcase on the desk. "We leave no witnesses."
Vargas stared at the sleeping child behind the glass. She had spent the previous afternoon proudly showing him a tiny flower she had made by folding tissue paper. She had asked whether flowers smelled sweeter outside. He had lied and told her he didn't remember. Now they wanted him to kill her.
"No." The word escaped before he could stop it.
The room became perfectly still. The suited man slowly turned. "What did you say?" Vargas met his eyes. "I said no." One guard reached for his pistol. The Consortium representative raised a hand, stopping him. "You've grown a conscience."
Vargas laughed bitterly. "No." His eyes filled with tears. "I found what was left of it."
Marco heard the muffled shouting through the wall.bHis head tilted slightly. "Something's happening inside." He motioned toward two operatives. "Rear entrance." They disappeared silently into the darkness. Another operative unpacked a compact hydraulic breaching tool.
Marco stopped him with a shake of his head. "Not yet." The shouting grew louder. Then...
A single gunshot echoed from inside the building. Every operative froze. Marco's eyes became cold. "We're done waiting." He drew his sidearm. "Go."
The front door disappeared inward beneath the force of the hydraulic ram. The two guards barely had time to react. One reached for his weapon. A precise shot struck his shoulder, spinning him backward. The second guard attempted to raise an alarm. An operative tackled him before he could speak into his radio.
Marco sprinted through the entrance. Another gunshot echoed deeper inside the building. He rounded the final corner just as Doctor Vargas staggered backward, blood spreading across his left shoulder. The Consortium representative turned sharply toward the unexpected intrusion.
His expression shifted from irritation...To disbelief. Five black-clad operators stood in the doorway. Marco's pistol never wavered.
"Step away from the child."
The man smiled coldly. "I don't think so." He reached toward the observation room door.
Marco fired. The bullet struck the man's forearm. The pistol flew across the floor.
Two operatives immediately subdued the remaining guards. Doctor Vargas collapsed against the wall, clutching his wounded shoulder. Marco didn't spare the Consortium man another glance. He pushed open the isolation room. A small figure stirred beneath the blanket. Sleepy eyes blinked open.
Sofia looked at the stranger standing in her doorway. For one frightened second...She thought she was dreaming. Marco slowly knelt beside her bed. He reached into his vest and withdrew the faded blue ribbon once more. A tiny smile touched Sofia's lips. "I know that ribbon."
Marco smiled back. "I know you do."
She looked beyond him toward the chaos in the hallway. Then back into his eyes. "Did she really come back?"
Marco felt a lump rise in his throat. "Yes."
He carefully lifted the little girl into his arms. "She kept her promise."
Outside, the first rays of dawn began touching the distant horizon. For forty children...Morning was finally coming.
