Chapter 137 The Storm Breaks
Chapter 137 The Storm Breaks
The first alarm had barely finished echoing through the underground complex when Marco began moving. Not running. Running created noise. Running invited panic. He advanced with the controlled speed of a man who had rehearsed every corridor a hundred times inside his mind.
His team flowed behind him like a single organism. Years of training had erased the need for shouted orders. Each operative understood his role. Each trusted the others to fulfill theirs.
Luca's voice remained steady over the encrypted channel. "The estate is locking down." Marco glanced toward the reinforced blast doors at the far end of the corridor. "I noticed."
"The outer perimeter is mobilizing."
"Expected."
"The Consortium members are still inside the mansion."
That piece of information interested him. "They haven't evacuated?"
"No."
Marco smiled faintly. "They still think they're in control."
Rafael Ortega stood in the mansion's security center, watching dozens of camera feeds. One by one, exterior guards reported in. The northern patrol. No response. The western wall. No response. The eastern observation tower. Silence.
His chief of security looked increasingly pale. "They've taken the perimeter." Ortega remained composed. "How many?"
"We don't know."
"Professional?"
"Without question."
One monitor suddenly went black. Then another. A third. The security technician frantically typed commands. "They're inside our network."
"No."
Ortega corrected him calmly. "They're inside the building."
He looked toward the underground access point. "Activate Internal Response Unit." The chief hesitated. "The children..."
"They are assets." His tone remained completely emotionless. "They are replaceable." The words chilled everyone in the room.
Even men accustomed to violence exchanged uneasy glances. There was something profoundly unsettling about hearing a human life reduced to a line in an inventory.
Below ground, steel doors slammed shut throughout the complex. Electronic locks engaged with heavy metallic clicks. Children began crying. The younger ones clung to the older children.
Daniel immediately moved toward the frightened little girl with the stuffed rabbit. "It's all right." She looked at him with frightened eyes. "No." Her tiny voice shook. "It isn't." He wished he could tell her otherwise. Then...A distant sound reached them. Not shouting. Not alarms. Three muffled cracks echoed through the corridor. Suppressors. Daniel had heard them before. His breathing stopped. Someone was fighting.
Marco rounded the next corner just as six armed men emerged from the opposite corridor. Both sides reacted instantly.bThe traffickers raised their rifles. Marco's team was already firing. Suppressed weapons coughed softly. The exchange lasted less than four seconds.
Two guards collapsed with shoulder wounds. Another cried out as a bullet shattered his weapon hand. The remaining three wisely threw themselves behind cover. Marco didn't pursue immediately.bHe had no interest in becoming trapped in a prolonged firefight.
"Smoke."
One operative immediately tossed a tactical smoke grenade. White smoke flooded the corridor. Not to conceal their movement. To obscure the children's location. The guards could no longer fire safely. Neither could Marco's team. That was precisely the point. Children always came before clean shots.
The team moved through the smoke with thermal optics guiding every step. Within seconds they had flanked the traffickers. The confrontation ended almost as quickly as it had begun. Three unconscious. Three wounded. No fatalities.
Marco checked each man before taking their weapons. His expression remained cold. "Zip-tie them." One operative looked surprised. "We're leaving them alive?" Marco met his eyes. "They'll answer questions later."
Back in Italy, Lia suddenly dropped the teacup she had been holding. Porcelain shattered across the kitchen floor. Grandfather De Luca immediately stood. "Lia."
She pressed one hand against her chest. "I..."
Her breathing became uneven. Doctor Matteo was beside her within seconds. "What happened?"
She slowly shook her head. "I don't know." Tears unexpectedly filled her eyes. "It feels..." She struggled to explain. "...like something has started." Matteo exchanged a brief glance with Grandfather De Luca. Neither believed in supernatural connections. Yet neither dismissed trauma either.
The mind remembered things in extraordinary ways. He gently guided her toward a chair. "Breathe slowly." She obeyed. Far away in Mexico, men were risking their lives to rescue children from the same darkness she had once survived. Whether coincidence or instinct, her heart seemed to know that history had reached another turning point.
Daniel heard heavy and purposeful footsteps approaching the dormitory. Not the casual pace of routine patrols. The younger children huddled together. One little boy began quietly crying. Daniel stepped between them and the steel door. He possessed no weapon. No plan. Only determination.
If someone entered...They would reach the younger children only after going through him. The electronic lock beeped. Once. Twice.
Then...Instead of opening inward, the reinforced door slowly swung outward.
A man dressed entirely in black stepped inside. Night vision goggles rested above his eyes. A suppressed rifle remained pointed safely toward the floor. Daniel instinctively tensed. The stranger immediately removed one glove. Then slowly raised an open hand. Not a threat. A greeting.
His voice remained low. "We're here to take you home." Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. The children simply stared. Home. The word sounded almost foreign. One little girl whispered through trembling lips. "Is..."
She swallowed hard. "...is this another test?"
Marco's expression softened. "No." He slowly reached into the pocket over his heart. Carefully, he withdrew the faded blue ribbon. He knelt before the frightened children. "A woman asked me to bring this." Daniel looked at the ribbon. Something flickered across his face.
One of the younger girls suddenly gasped. "I know that ribbon." Every head turned toward her. Tears filled her small eyes. "The nice lady..." Her voice cracked with emotion. "...used to wear one just like it." Marco's heart tightened. Tatiana. Lia. Hope. They had survived in the smallest of things.
He smiled gently. "The nice lady never forgot you." For the first time in years...The children began to believe someone had finally come.
