Chapter 30
Chapter 30
Brianna's POV
Walking to and fro in the hospital's waiting area, I felt tense and drained by all that had just happened. Why she fainted was simple: Aunt Martha was elderly; she wasn't just fit enough to withstand the pressure.
The guilt washed over me, thinking that I had not been able to protect her, that it fell to me to never find Logan. Nothing came out of all our search and it was becoming frustrating.
I settled down on the chair and buried my head in my hands. Why was this happening? Why couldn't we find Logan?
I tried to recollect exactly all he had done on his last day and gauge very minute. Did he say anything strange? Was there any hint of being agitated, or nervous, or something?
But try as I might, nothing clicked to lead us to his whereabouts.
I looked up to see Uncle Michael strolling toward me, his face serious. "Is there any news?" I asked, holding the faintest glimmer of hope in my heart.
But he shook his head. "Nothing. I've checked all of Logan's usual hangouts and talked to all his friends. No one has seen him."
Anger and frustration churned inside me. Why couldn't we find him? Why was this happening to us?
Uncle Michael placed a fatherly touch on my shoulder. "We will find him, Brianna. I promise. We just need to keep looking."
I wasn't so sure. With every passing minute, it just felt as if we were running out of time.
Okay, Aunt Martha was released from the hospital that very day, but she still looked weak and shaken. I continued to be with her, hoping I would uplift her spirits.
And later, as evening dragged on, hopelessness fell over us. Where could Logan be? I simply hoped that he would come out safe.
I glanced back at Aunt Martha, who lay sleeping on the couch, her eyes closed; I somehow felt that she was conjuring up thoughts of the same kind.
I took a long breath and rose to my feet, resolve coursing through my limbs. I would be searching for Logan come what may. I would do it thoroughly; leaving no stone unturned.
I would bring him back home under any condition.
I sat with Aunt Martha on the couch, and my brain was busy trying to think of Logan and where he might be. I brought out my phone and dialled Brenda's number, wishing she has some updates or information somehow.
She picked up on the first ring. "Brianna, oh my goodness, I've been trying to reach you." "How is Aunt Martha doing?"
I informed her about Aunt Martha collapsing and going to the hospital, before giving her the recent search updates on Logan.
Brenda was an attentive listener, occasionally having some questions to ask and words to encourage listening. After my narration, there was a moment's silence on her end.
"Brianna, I have something to tell you," she finally broke out, her voice soft and very earnest. "I've been thinking quite a lot about Logan's disappearance, and I must tell you I'm getting very bad vibes."
I felt my spine tingle. "What kind of vibe?"
Brenda hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to proceed. "I think...I think Dad might be implicated."
It felt like a sharp pain in my stomach. "What's going on? Why would you say that?"
Brenda took a long breath. "I know it sounds crazy, but just think about it." Logan was searching into Dad's business activities, and now he's disappeared. "It's too much of a coincidence."
I was amazed by those words. Is it possible that our father is actually mixed up in Logan's disappearance? The thought sent shivers down my spine.
"Bren, we need to talk, not over the phone," I finally said, trying to figure out my feelings. "Can you come by?"
"Okay, definitely," said Brenda. "I'll be over soon."
I sat on the couch, my head still dizzy with the words thrown at me by Brenda. Our father is possibly involved in Logan's disappearance. I just couldn't shake the feeling that something was not right but I couldn't place it.
.
I began composing my thoughts when Uncle Michael entered the room with something strongly written on his face.
"Brianna, I've got some news," he said, with a straight tone-Heard." I've been tracking down people to see if anything out of the ordinary occurred." "I believe I found something."
I leaned in, screaming silently in my heart. "What is it?"
Uncle Michael inhaled deeply. "There is a rumor that Logan had crossed path with a guy at the casino yesterday." They exchanged words, and Logan... Let's just say won.
A wave of pride washed over me. Logan is strong; I wasn't surprised he could hold his own.
Uncle Michael's expression, however, remained stern. "The point is, Brianna, that guy Logan fought belongs to a pretty tough crowd." "And I worry that they might retaliate."
I felt a shiver run down my spine. Is that the reason he has gone missing? Did he accidentally discover something worse than what we thought?
Uncle Michael nodded. "I think it can be done." I think this needs to be probed more. Let's see if we can find out more about this guy and his gang.
I stood up with resolve flowing through my veins. "Let's get it done." I wanted to find Logan, and have him protected.
Uncle Michael nodded. A slight smile appeared on his face. "That's my daughter," he said. "Let's get to work."
Together we would get to the bottom of Logan's disappearance: the casino, the witnesses, and the facts.
As long as we dug, I could not shake the feeling that we were closing in on the truth. And still, I found it difficult to shake the feeling that we may be over our heads.
More twisted than we first believed, Logan's disappearance was beginning to make me realize that we were up against some very dangerous people.
But I was determined to find Logan at all costs; I was willing to risk everything to ensure his safety.
