The Cradle and The Chaos

Chapter Sixty-Seven: The Cradle and The Chaos

The baby’s cries were ear-splitting, turning the mansion's fancy living room into a chaotic mess.

Prince was bouncing her awkwardly, but it was doing absolutely nothing.

"Shhh, little one, come on," he pleaded, looking totally helpless.

Aldrich’s patience had run out. His voice was a low, angry growl that cut through the noise.

"This discussion is over. That human child does not belong here. She goes back. Now."

But Aiden moved faster, stepping right in front of Prince and the baby.

He gently took the little girl’s flailing hand in his, and his touch seemed to calm her for a half-second. His voice was soft but left no room for argument.

"Look at her, Aldrich. She's terrified. We can't just toss her out while she's screaming like this. Let me just... make sure she's okay first. That's all I'm asking."

BANG!

The door flew open and Merrick skidded into the room, his eyes wild.

"What the hell is going on? I heard screaming! Is it the baby? Did Aiden have the baby already?! Why is it so loud?!"

Aiden took the baby from a grateful Prince.

He held her for a second, then his nose wrinkled. "Oh. Oh, wow." He lifted her slightly.

"She's... she's soaked. And she really, really needs a change. Fiona, I need help! I need diapers. And a clean onesie, something soft. And... what do they even eat? Is it formula? Do we have any?"

Fiona was already on her phone, dialing furiously. "I'm on it. I'm calling Gabriella. She'll know what to do. Somebody text me a list of everything we need!"

Gabriella answered her phone with a cheerful smile, River by her side. "Fiona, darling! You won't believe what River and I just pulled off…”

Her smile instantly vanished.

"Diapers? What are you talking about?" Her voice shot up an octave. "Did Aiden have the baby?! It's way too soon, is he okay?"

She listened, and her face went from confused to utterly horrified.

"They did WHAT? They brought a WHAT home from a monster attack?"

She pinched the bridge of her nose. "Fine. Text me a list. Everything. We're on our way."

Twenty minutes later, Gabriella and River were standing in the baby aisle of a superstore, looking completely lost.

"Grandma?" River asked, staring at a wall of a hundred different diaper boxes. "There are so many kinds. Which one do we get?"

Gabriella's confident facade cracked. Her voice got a little shaky. "I... I don't know. They didn't have all these brands and sizes back in my day."

The memory of not being able to do this for her own son, Aiden, hit her hard.

She took a shaky breath and started grabbing things at random. "Just... grab that big can of formula. And those tiny pink socks. We'll figure the rest out later."

\---

Back at the mansion, a miracle had happened. The baby was clean, fed, and finally quiet, sleeping peacefully in Aiden's arms.

He was rocking her gently, a look of pure adoration on his face.

Over the last few days, his attachment had grown so strong you'd think he'd carried her for nine months himself.

Aldrich approached slowly, not wanting to ruin the moment. "Aiden, my love," he said, his voice gentle. "She's calm now. We need to make a plan to find her family."

Aiden's head snapped up. He held the baby defensively closer, his voice trembling with emotion.

"Her family is gone, Aldrich. She has no one. What if the system takes her? What if she ends up in some horrible foster home where no one wants her?"

A tear escaped down his cheek. "I know that feeling. I won't let her go through that. I won't."

Just then, Grants walked in proudly, holding a baby bottle. "Here. I made the baby food. Heated it up myself. It's warm."

Aiden grabbed the bottle and rolled his eyes. "Grants, give me your hand. I need to check it."

Before Grants could protest, Aiden squirted a single drop onto the back of his hand.

"YEEOWCH! AHH! That's boiling!" Grants yelled, shaking his hand like it was on fire. "Are you trying to cook my hand?!"

Prince, who had been watching from the doorway, burst out laughing.

"You were going to feed a baby lava?"

"Aiden," Aldrich said, his voice firm but loving.

"You need to rest. You haven't slept properly in days, and you're still pregnant. You can't stress yourself out like this. We will take care of her."

"I don't trust y'all," Aiden mumbled, his eyelids already getting heavy.

Aldrich didn't argue. He gently took the sleeping baby from Aiden's arms and carefully pushed his exhausted mate down onto the plush couch. "Sleep," he commanded softly. "Now, Aiden not buts"

Elliot stood in front of the family, a holographic screen showing complex data.

"The creature's residue... it's not organic, like blood. It's a mineral compound, high in silicates. The closest earthly match is obsidian…volcanic glass."

The Seer, who had been silent in the corner, spoke up, her voice ancient and echoing.

"Stone given breath, fire given form. The old texts speak of earth-elementals, creatures of rock and magma. The bestiary in the forbidden archives holds the key to understanding them."

"Good," Aldrich said, standing up with purpose. "Fiona, Prince, with me. We'll…”

He was cut off by Gabriella, who had just walked back in with bags of supplies. She looked around the quiet, focused room.

"This is a nice, calm moment," she said, a hint of suspicion in her voice.

"So, where's the baby? I thought you were all watching her."

Prince's eyes went wide. He pointed a trembling finger at the empty, rumpled blanket on the couch.

"She... she was right there! I just turned around for one second to listen to Elliot!"

Grants' face lost all its color. His voice was a terrified, panicked whisper that silenced the entire room.

"The baby is... she’s gone."
