Chapter Seventy-Five: Sparks and Scans
BANG! BANG!
The sound of gunshots ripped through the peaceful quiet of the woods, sending a flock of birds scattering from the trees.
"Ahhh, missed it again!" Aiden groaned, throwing his hands up in the air in frustration.
The shotgun felt heavy and unfamiliar in his grasp.
A deep, ancient voice, laced with amusement, echoed inside his own mind. "I could suppress your memory lapses, Moon Child, but do I need to work on your eyesight as well?"
Aiden scowled, kicking at a loose pebble. "You know, I think I preferred it when you were the strong, silent god-type. This new chatty version is kind of a pain."
Before the Alpha Prime could retort, Aldrich was there, his large, warm hands gently prying the gun from Aiden's grip.
"That's enough hunting for today, my love," he said, his voice a low, soothing rumble. "The deer population thanks you for your mercy."
"Don't worry about it," Aiden pouted, though he leaned into Aldrich's side. "Even the ancient deity living in my head thinks I'm going blind."
"I never said that!" the Alpha Prime's voice boomed internally, making Aiden wince. "I merely suggested your aim is comparable to a newborn fawn's!"
In the newly set-up mini-lab, the air hummed with a unique blend of technology and magic.
Wires snaked across tables next to bundles of glowing herbs, and sleek computer monitors sat beside clusters of pulsating crystals.
"Careful, Merrick," Elliot murmured, his entire world narrowed down to the delicate circuit board under his magnifying glass.
His tongue was peeking out from the corner of his mouth in concentration.
Merrick, who had been "organizing" tools by clanging them together loudly, immediately stilled.
He was trying so hard to help, but his presence was about as subtle as a tornado in a library. Elliot found it incredibly endearing.
Touched by the effort, Elliot decided to throw him a bone.
"Hey, can you hand me that clear crystal? The one that's humming? And... careful with it, please." He then immediately turned back to his work.
A wide, eager grin spread across Merrick's face. "I got you, baby. Just tell me what to do, genius. I'm great with my hands."
He winked, even though Elliot wasn't looking.
He picked up the crystal, which thrummed with a soft, lunar energy.
Trying to be gentle, he gripped it a little too firmly. A sharp CRACK echoed in the lab.
For a split second, nothing happened. Then, the crystal flared with a blinding white light, and a wave of energy pulsed outwards.
Every screen in the lab flickered and died. Sparks shot from Elliot's main console, and the machine he'd been building for a week powered down with a pathetic, sad fizzle.
Elliot froze. Slowly, he turned around, his face a mask of pure, unadulterated horror.
"Merrick!" he gasped, his voice barely a whisper.
Merrick stood frozen, holding the two broken halves of the crystal.
A smudge of soot was on his cheek, and he looked like a puppy that had just been caught chewing on the favorite sofa cushion. "It... it was an accident..."
Elliot stared from the wrecked machine to Merrick's utterly devastated face.
The anger built, a hot wave ready to break... and then it just... popped. A snort escaped him. Then a choked giggle.
Then he was laughing, a full-bellied, helpless laugh that forced him to lean against the table for support.
"You... you are something else, Merrick!" he managed to get out between gasps. "You set my project back a week, you, clumsy disaster!"
The tension shattered. Relief flooded Merrick's features, and soon he was laughing too, the sound rich and loud in the quiet lab.
They ended up clutching their stomachs, sitting on the floor amidst the minor wreckage.
"I'll get you a thousand new crystals," Merrick promised, pulling Elliot into a tight, sooty embrace. "Just please, don't ban me from the lab. I'll just... watch from the corner. Quietly."
"Deal," Elliot giggled, burying his face in Merrick's neck.
"Prince! If we don't leave now, we're going to be the first werewolves in history to miss a flight we chartered ourselves!"
Grants yelled, tapping his foot impatiently beside the sleek black car.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" Prince came skidding down the mansion's grand staircase, a backpack slung over his shoulder.
"I just had to do a last-minute check! I couldn't find my favorite sunscreen!"
Grants rolled his eyes, but a fond smile betrayed his annoyed act.
"If we forget anything, we can buy it. We're going to a private island, not the moon."
Prince finally slid into the car, buzzing with excitement. Grants tried to play it cool, but the corner of his mouth kept twitching upwards.
"Make sure you bring back my best friend in one piece," Aiden said, pointing a stern finger at Grants, his arms crossed over his small baby bump.
Grants placed a hand over his heart and took a dramatic, sweeping bow.
"I swear on my life, my dear Omega. I shall return him to you unspoiled."
"Be careful, you two," Fiona added, leaning in the doorway. "And try not to do anything too reckless."
"Us? Reckless? Never," Prince said with an innocent grin as Grants started the car with a powerful purr.
Back in the lab, the mood was a mix of excitement and nervous tension.
Aiden was lying back on a comfortable recliner that was part of a giant, intricate machine.
Wires with glowing tips were attached painlessly to his skin, and a large, circular scanner hummed gently above his stomach.
"You just have to lie still, Aiden. It won't hurt a bit," Elliot directed, his fingers flying across a holographic keyboard.
Aldrich was pacing. "Are you absolutely sure this is harmless, Elliot? This thing looks... huge."
His alpha instincts were on high alert, his protective energy filling the room. One of the lab assistants blushed under his intense gaze.
"Trust me, Aldrich," Aiden said softly, reaching out a hand. Aldrich immediately went to him, taking his hand.
"It'll be fine. Besides, Elliot banned a certain someone from touching anything, so what could possibly go wrong?" He shot a playful look at Merrick.
"Hey! I really tried to help earlier!" Merrick yelped from his designated "safe spot" in the corner, arms crossed in mock offense.
Elliot took a deep breath. "Okay. And... here we go." He pressed a final button.
The machine whirred to life, and a soft, blue light washed over Aiden.
A moment later, a shimmering, magical hologram flickered to life above them.
It was the baby…a perfect, tiny form, curled up and peaceful, its little heart beating in a steady, rapid rhythm.
A collective gasp filled the room.
"Wow," Aiden whispered, tears instantly springing to his eyes. "That's our baby."
Aldrich stared, his tough alpha exterior melting away into pure awe.
He squeezed Aiden's hand, then turned to Elliot, his own eyes suspiciously bright.
He placed a heavy, grateful hand on Elliot's shoulder, the gesture saying more than words ever could.
"You have given us a gift beyond measure, Elliot," he said, his voice thick with emotion.
"That's my little nephew right there!" Merrick announced proudly, peering at the hologram.
Aiden shot him a look.
"Or... niece!" Merrick stammered quickly, raising his hands in surrender. "A very strong, healthy niece!"
Elliot smiled, his heart swelling with pride. "The full gender detection results will be processed soon.
For now..." He turned to one of his assistants. "Run the full diagnostic suite. I want every test done to confirm this baby is one hundred percent healthy."
As the assistant hurried off, the lab was filled with a profound, happy silence, broken only by the sound of a tiny, magical heartbeat.
