Chapter 42 Chapter Forty-Two

Chapter 42 Chapter Forty-Two
Chapter Forty-Two
🪯🪯🪯
                    Mirah

“You look distracted,” A voice sliced through my thoughts, making me flinch. It was the customer who'd ordered a gin and tonic.

“Sorry,” I apologized awkwardly.

Of course, I was distracted. He'd left without a word. My attempt to ask Qyle had ended in futility.

The rock of a human wouldn't even volunteer any information. A look at his bland face had told me that nothing would change even though I spent the whole day asking. My head ached from last night's thoughts.

‘How could he leave me, without even a message. Was that what mattered to him? Nothing?’

My phone dinged, and I took it out of my pocket. I'd styled the bartender's uniform to suit my taste. The result of which was, every male customer stole glances at me at any given opportunity. My phone's screen was lit with a message from Nessa. She wouldn't be home tonight.

‘Business matters.’

And she didn't sound so happy.

“Some blood on the rocks,” Someone said.

“Blood on the- what?” I raised my head to meet the gaze of someone I wasn't expecting to see. Scratch that, I didn't want to see.

“Darcel?”

Great, the heavens were smiling on me tonight. And it was in the form of the tall slender beauty with golden hair at my front. Zeke's-

I shook my head, and took on another approach. “What are you doing here? In Vermont?”

She chuckled, the sound as elegant as she was. She was dressed in a red jumpsuit, which earned her many appreciative glances.

“I came to see you.” She smiled.

But I'd be a fool to think the aura she was oozing was friendly. It was anything, but friendly.

“I'm busy, and at work.” I didn't bother asking her how she found me, or why she left Weasels to ‘see’ me.

“Your shift would be over in five. Meet me at the rooftop of the building opposite.” Them she swung and left.

“Sweet God,” I massaged my temple, and leaned on the counter.

She knew my work hours, my workplace, even knew the building opposite Barcon. I needed no one to tell me that that bloodsucker of a woman had been keeping tabs on me.

An ominous feeling engulfed me, turning my hair and back damp.

…

Her back faced me as I stepped onto the rooftop minutes later. Her posture was straight; with the confidence of someone who knew what she came to do.

I couldn't help but feel threatened as I advanced towards her.

“You are here.” With that same cold smile, she finally turned to face me.

“I guess. Can we make this quick?” My words were in complete contrast to my racing heart.

I was alone with a vampire who wasn't Zeke. A vampire who apparently deemed me as a threat. She could bite off my head, suck my blood, and turn my body to dust.

She could make me-

‘Breathe Mirah,’ My inner voice said.

“Stay away from him.” Darcel said, brushing on the side of her lap.

I blinked twice. “From who?”

She threw her head back, in laughter. It vanished when she looked at me again. “Playing dumb with me? Don't worry, I'll make this quick.” She moved towards me.

I didn't back away until she was a few inches away from me. “Zeke left the wedding, and abandoned his position because of you. He's stubborn.” Her cold eyes trained on mine.

Her pale skin shone in the semi-dark night.

“I can't see where this is going.” I whispered, conscious of the fact that her words had induced goosebumps, and made cold sweat trickle down my back.

Again, that cold chuckle left her lips. “Tell him to stay away from you. Zeke can't bear being told off. Once you tell him that, he'd be sure to leave you.”

I almost laughed. I wasn't forcing myself on Zeke.

“And if I don't?” I asked, pretending to be unfazed.

“James Aurel and Kathryn Aurel. Familiar with those names?” She tilted her head downwards.

My eyes narrowed. “What have you-” I swallowed the rest of my words, when she held up a finger.

“Easy,” she scoffed. “Avoid Zeke. He doesn't belong to you.”

I didn't respond. The daughterofabitch.

Fancy her threatening me with my family.“Does he belong to you?” At this point, I wasn't afraid of her. I just wanted to say hurtful things.

As expected, her eyes gleamed with anger. “Dare say that again.”

Unfortunately, as always, my brain wasn't working alongside my mouth that night.

I took one step closer. We were so close now, that I could see the outline of her face clearly.

“Zeke doesn't belong to you.” I barely got the words out, when her wrist gripped my neck. For a woman, her strength was strong. I choked on her hold, weakly flapping at her hand.

“You know, you're not my match. But I don't act without warning. Zeke is the cause of all these,” she spoke with disdain. “A human getting mated to a vampire?” She scoffed, while I struggled to catch up on her words.

Mated? What in the name of holy vampires did that mean?

“Moreover, Zeke wouldn't take it in good stride, if I killed you.” She said heatedly.

Judging from the burning fury in her eyes, I didn't doubt that she could snap my neck without hesitation, at the slightest provocation.

She finally let me go, and I almost stumbled from the force. My hand went up to my neck, rubbing on it.

“The next time, we wouldn't be having such a decent conversation.” A cold smile tugged at her lips.

Decent? Yeah, almost choking me to death could go down as being decent.

She moved towards the edge of the rooftop. “I hate to say this, but I believe you're smart. I'd hate to end your beautiful life.”

“By the way, aren't you wondering where Zeke is at the moment?” She added as an afterthought.

My heart dropped as I heard his name flow out of her mouth.

“I don't care.”

“Of course you shouldn't. He was with me last night. And need I tell you what we were doing?” She let the words hang.

A cloak materialized, with the rope on her neck, and stretching behind her jumpsuit. She jumped down the building. With widened eyes, I rushed over.

My eyes skimmed over the dark view beneath. She'd vanished.
