Epilogue
Fallon:
I stand beside Azazel and Lucifer and observe Lilith’s power is drained and placed on the amulet. Lilith rants and raves from her temporary cell inside my father’s fortress, but we ignore her. Lucifer drops a black satchel through the bars and takes a step back. “You’re human now, Lilith. It’s time for you to find your true destiny.”
Lilith scowls at the bag. “What did you do to me? What have you done to my powers?”
Lucifer puffs out a breath. “I siphoned all of your power. You can no longer hurt anyone. In exchange, I’m allowing you to redeem yourself. But listen well…” he states firmly.
Lilith’s incredulous eyes snap back to his. “What?”
Lucifer continues. “If you ruin this opportunity, I will make sure that you are punished for it.”
Before Lilith can argue further, Lucifer aims his palm toward her, and she disappears.
“Where did she go?” Azazel asks.
Lucifer shrugs. “I sent her to an old acquaintance in Paris. He’ll make sure that she adjusts to life in the human world and that she doesn’t do something that will make me want to kill her.”
My brow furrows. “What friend do you speak of?”
Lucifer smirks. “I sent her to Michael.”
Azazel and I gasp. “You mean, archangel Michael? That, Michael?”
I’m beyond astonished. “I didn’t even know that you two were on good terms.”
Lucifer nods. “We’re really not. My brother can be quite the pompous ass. He’s just like father in that way. Let’s just say he owed me a favor.”
Azazel snorts with amusement. “I’m sure that he’s not going to be happy with what you asked him to do.”
Lucifer shrugs. “He has no choice,”
We follow Lucifer out of the chambers and back to his meeting room. “Now that the demons who Lilith was siphoning are back in their realms, I can focus back on my own tasks.”
Azazel looks at me and holds up the amulet. “I should go and take this back to Mathias. Are you still coming over for dinner tonight?”
I nod. “Bree and I will be there after she gets out of class. I know that she’s looking forward to spending time with Zoe now that she’s back from Los Angeles.”
Azazel gives him a sideways smile and looks back at Lucifer. “You know to find me if there’s anything you need.”
Lucifer gives him a circumspect scowl. “I doubt I’ll need you, you wanker.”
Azazel snickers in reply. “Oh, you will, you sod. Just you wait and see.”
Before Lucifer can retort, Azazel gives him a smarmy wave and disappears.
“You two are like two rivaling old birds. I don’t understand why you just can’t bury the hatchet.”
Lucifer laughs. “Oh, it’s all in good fun, my son.”
I shake my head wryly and take a seat. There are far too many important things to talk about now, and I’m not in the mood to be circumspect. “Have you thought about what you’re going to do about Lana?”
Lucifer’s expression shutters. “What do you mean, Fallon? There’s really nothing to do. Just because we now know that it wasn’t the Creator who put her in Bree’s life, it doesn’t mean anything changes. We’re just not meant to be.”
I frown. “So, you’re just going to give up on your soul mate? Just like that?” I snap my fingers.
He looks down at his cluttered desk, then back at me. “It has to be this way, Fallon. She’s better off without me.”
He looks so resolute when he says it that it pains me. Now that I know what it’s like to have a mate, I’m boggled by the whole situation. As soon as I recovered my soul, I knew that Bree was meant to be mine, and I can’t imagine living without her. I know that Lucifer and Aliana’s situation is a lot more complicated, but I can’t understand why they can’t be together. “But she’s yours, father. She’s meant to be with you. Don’t you want to show the creator that you’ve won? You’ve found her even though the Creator cast you out. And according to Lilith, the Creator can do nothing about it.”
He snaps up from his seat and slams his palm against the desk’s surface. “That’s enough, Fallon! I am done speaking of this. Now, if you don’t have anything else to do, I’d if you would not bring it up again.”
Seeing that he’s upset, I swallow the rest of what I was going to say and nod. “You’re right, father. What you do is your business.” I rise from my seat and place my hands in my pockets. “I should go then. I promised Bree I’d have all of her things moved into my home before she got out of class.”
His expression softens. “So, it’s true then; Bree is moving into your home?”
“Yes, I asked her to move in with me; after that, Lana decided to stay and research the Grand Canyon.”
“Congratulations,” he says. “I’m truly glad for you.”
“Call me if you need me,” I mutter before I project myself to my home.
All of Bree’s things are moved into the house and properly placed within hours. We agreed to store Lana’s things in one of the spare rooms until she got back and decided what she wanted to do.
That evening after we’ve had dinner with Azazel and Zoe, Bree sits in the living area with me and hands me a glass of wine. She lies down beside me and rests her head on my shoulder. “You’ve been so quiet tonight. What’s wrong?”
Angling my arm around her shoulder, I take a tendril of her hair between my fingers and twirl it. “Why do you think that anything is wrong?”
She quirks a brow and warily asks. “Did you change your mind about me moving in?”
I slide up on my seat, pull her closer and kiss her temple. “No, luv, that’s not it at all. I’m quite happy to have you here with me.”
“She looks up at me. “Then what is it?”
I pull her head beneath my chin and tighten my embrace. “I guess I’m worried about Lucifer. When I approached the topic of accepting his mate bond with Lana, he became upset. It saddens me that he won’t speak of it.”
Her eyes glimmer with sadness. “I get what you’re saying. We’re in a difficult position because Lana is unaware of their fate. But you know what?”
She turns in my arms and places her forehead against mine. “What’?” I ask.
She gives me a sly smile. “You know, at first I wasn’t sure about Lucifer. But then he acted so honorably that I couldn’t help thinking that he’d be perfect for Lana. That’s why I get the feeling that things will soon change between them. Lana and Lucifer were meant to be, and if there’s anything I’ve learned after everything that has happened this year, I know that you can’t change destiny.”
I grin at her optimistic outlook. Perhaps Lucifer and Lana will find their way back to each other. One can hope.
