"What the hell are you talking about?" she snapped at me, clearly displeased with my presence.
The feeling is mutual.
"About you. Seems like someone hurt you too. Was it your friend, the wolf?" I mocked. "What do you think my father would do if I told him that you broke into my house last night and ordered the wolf to kill me?" I threatened, glaring at her with hatred. Riley is a dangerous woman, and I won't show her any mercy. She committed a serious crime.
Riley seemed slightly scared but managed to maintain her composure.
"The mayor, my mother-in-law, wouldn't let your daddy hurt me," she taunted. I felt anger when she mentioned Kayler's mom.
"You mean your ex-mother-in-law," I retorted.
Riley laughed.
"Everyone here knows that Kessler and I will get married. It's not something he can stop," she smiled. "Nor can you."
I didn't understand what she meant. She seemed very sure of her words. There's something Kessler isn't telling me, and I need to know what it is because I don't want to end up with a broken heart.
"Be careful, Riley, because I'll be watching you," I threatened, returning to Kessler's side.
"What are you doing?" he snapped.
"What are you talking about?"
"Eva, don't do things you won't be able to control later. I know why I'm telling you this," he took my hand. "All I want is to protect you."
I looked at Lucas and remembered the similarity in his eyes to Riley's.
"Kessler, do the guys here do drugs?" I wanted to know, looking at him.
"Hmm, no, why?"
"Because maybe Lucas is doing it. I've noticed that Riley and he have yellowish eyes, and I don't like it. My brother can't be corrupted by the people in this town," I confessed. "I feel like Lucas is changing, he's not the same as before since that incident at the fair."
Kessler nodded, agreeing with me.
"Don't worry, I'll talk to Lucas and find out what's going on. Don't worry."
"Thank you," I smiled. Kessler has become a support for me. The funeral continued as normal, they started burying the coffins, the rain became even stronger, and there were even lightning and thunder. The funeral had to be done faster.
It's terribly cold. All I want is to get home, make myself a hot chocolate, and lie down to watch Twilight. I sighed deeply, thinking about the plan.
The funeral finally ended, and everyone started dispersing.
"Now where are we going?" I asked Kessler, hoping he'd want to accompany me and lie down in my house. I would love that.
"I have to talk to Lucas about what you told me, Eva. I think it's very urgent," Kessler replied.
"Now?"
"Yes."
"Eva!"
Lottie appeared with Lucas.
"Are we going to your house?" the girl asked me.
"Yes..." I began to say, but Kessler interrupted me.
"No. You two go ahead. I need to talk to you, Lucas. It's urgent."
Lucas nodded without any issues.
"We'll catch up with you at the house," Lucas said to me.
"Sure," Lottie nodded, staying with me. I have a bad feeling right now. I felt an overwhelming need to follow them and find out what they would talk about. Although I have an idea. Kessler and Lucas went towards the other graves.
"What are you thinking about?" Lottie asks me.
"What if we follow them?"
"No, are you kidding? I don't want Lucas to think I don't trust him."
I saw Riley heading in the same direction they went, she gave me a mocking look and disappeared among the graves.
"Let's go," I took Lottie's hand and compelled her to follow me. We moved stealthily among the graves, following the same path they had taken.
"Eva, I don't want to be a part of this," Lottie whispered. "Let's go, please."
"I just want to know what they're talking about."
"Believe me, it's better if we leave," she insisted.
"Just for a little bit," I persisted. But I couldn't find them anywhere. It's very strange. I stood still, feeling confused by what had happened. "They're not here."
"The cemetery is huge, Eva, we won't find them like this. We'll only get lost," she said.
Defeated, I sighed and nodded. I can't believe I couldn't find them.
"Fine, let's go."
When we turned around, we found Riley behind us. But she wasn't alone. Two of her friends accompanied her.
"What do you want, Riley?"
"Don't you know the saying, curiosity killed the cat?" she asked me.
"I know it very well, Riley," I crossed my arms to confront her. "And do you know the saying, he who walks among wolves learns to howl? I'm not surprised that you're a serial killer and that you brought us here to harm us."
She laughed.
"You're not mistaken. It was a trap. I lured you here to bury you alive," she pulled out a shovel from behind her. I looked at Lottie, not understanding. "Oh, and you brought your friend to her death as well. Poor Lottie, no one told you to be friends with Eva Bailey."
"What the hell are you talking about?" I snapped. The rain continued to fall on us. The mud beneath my feet became muddier.
"I've had enough of you, Eva. The only way to be rid of you is by killing you. That way, Kessler won't have to stay away from me, and everything will be as it was. Grab them," she ordered her two friends. The girls came toward us and took hold of our arms. Riley began digging a hole near some graves.
The idiot is serious.
I felt panic, fear, everything. I can't believe it!
"Eva..." Lottie looked at me, she was also very scared.
"We'll get out of this," I told her, trying to free myself from the girl, but she was stronger than I expected. Riley was stronger because the hole was deeper. It was almost finished.
"Let me go!" I shouted. "You'll regret this, Riley! I swear!" I glared at her with hatred. A hatred I didn't even know I had. Suddenly, I went crazy and elbowed the girl behind me in the stomach, causing her to release her grip. I then lunged at Riley, and we both fell into the hole.
