Chapter 63 - The Reckoning

The tension in the air was thick as Ethan, Luke, and Jacie approached the decrepit barn deep in the forest. The place looked abandoned, a weathered relic with cracked wood and faded paint, but its aura sent a chill down Ethan’s spine. Sophia was somewhere inside, facing God-knew-what dangers, and his wolf was howling, desperate to charge in and tear down anything between them.

Ethan clenched his fists, every muscle taut and ready to snap, but Jacie reached out, her touch gentle yet commanding. “Hold back, Ethan,” she said, her voice laced with the quiet power of her magic. “If you rush in, you’ll risk her life along with your own.”

Her words pierced through the haze of rage blinding him. He forced himself to take a breath, the urge to protect Sophia pressing in from every side. He met Jacie’s steady gaze and gave a tight nod, trusting her even as his instincts screamed otherwise. Luke, too, stood with a grim expression, his jaw clenched, every bit as eager to get to work.

Jacie’s face grew distant as she concentrated, pulling in her senses to gauge the situation. “I can feel eight rogues,” she whispered, eyes half-closed. “They’re spread around the barn—two near the tree line, three hiding around the shadows, and the rest lurking close to the barn’s walls.” Her voice dropped, filled with a note of unease. “And inside… Adrianne is with Sophia.”

Luke’s eyes darkened, his anger palpable as he absorbed this information. “She promised she wouldn’t get involved—she wouldn’t hurt her!” He ground his teeth, hands tightening into fists. “Adrianne crossed the line.”

Jacie’s face paled slightly as she sensed deeper. “Sophia’s blood…” she murmured, her tone laced with anxiety. “Adrianne’s been hitting her, but Sophia’s holding her own. Her strength… it’s unbelievable. Adrianne’s wearing down, but her rage is building.”

Luke let out a low, bitter laugh, though his eyes betrayed his fury. “Of course Sophia’s giving her hell. She knows exactly how to work Adrianne up, make her lose her edge.”

Despite his worry, Ethan’s mouth curled into a faint, prideful smirk. “She’s smart. Clever enough to use Adrianne’s temper against her, even if it puts her in more danger.”

Jacie interrupted, her tone focused and brisk. “We don’t have time to waste. Here’s the plan: Ethan, you and Luke take out the scouts. I’ll keep a barrier of silence around us, so the ones inside won’t hear a thing. After that, I’ll handle one rogue myself, and Luke can take down another. Ethan…” Her gaze held his with fierce purpose. “You go in for Adrianne. Make it quick.”

“Understood,” he replied, his voice low and dangerous. He was more than ready.

With one last nod, they moved. Ethan and Luke slipped into the shadows, their movements as silent as death. The first rogue barely had a chance to blink before Ethan’s claws slashed through its throat, the creature collapsing in a lifeless heap. Jacie’s magic held steady, wrapping the area in a dome of silence, absorbing every scream, every snarl, before it could escape into the night.

Luke was just as efficient, his steps calculated, deadly. In a single swipe, he took down another rogue, the body hitting the ground soundlessly. Even in the darkness, Ethan could see the controlled fury in his friend’s eyes, a lethal precision that matched his own. They both had more than enough reason to make this fight personal.

Together, they dispatched the remaining rogues outside the barn, their teamwork seamless and brutal. Each kill brought them closer to Sophia, and Ethan’s need to reach her burned brighter with every passing second. He could feel her, a faint pull that was as steady as a heartbeat. She was hurt but fighting, her spirit strong even amidst the chaos.

Once they cleared the last scout, Jacie’s dome of silence enveloped them closer. They moved with greater purpose now, each step calculated as they closed in on the barn’s edges, senses sharpened. Jacie stayed poised, maintaining the cloak of quiet, her energy unwavering as she kept the remaining threats contained.

In the shadow of the barn, Ethan caught the scent of Sophia’s blood again—distinct, visceral, and his resolve solidified. She was close, so close that his wolf surged forward, clawing against the walls of his mind, demanding release. But Ethan held him back, kept him in check, his focus sharper than ever.

Luke glanced over, nodding, his expression as dark as Ethan’s own. The two exchanged a silent agreement, knowing that they were ready for whatever was next. Jacie’s senses shifted as she tuned into the interior once more, her expression hardening. She met Ethan’s gaze with an intensity that cut through the night air. “We’re moving in on the last rogues. Luke and I will take them out while you find Adrianne.”

Ethan’s lips curled into a grim smile. “With pleasure.”

Jacie adjusted her spell, refining the silence around them. The forest around the barn was eerily quiet, the only sounds those of the soft rustling leaves and the steady thrum of Ethan’s heartbeat. Sophia’s presence grew stronger, urging him forward, reminding him of the promise he’d made to keep her safe.

They spread out, moving with lethal precision as they executed the next stage of the plan. The rogues inside would soon face the full brunt of their wrath, and Ethan would make sure no one laid another hand on Sophia.

As he and Luke advanced, they encountered the remaining scouts outside, picking them off in rapid succession. Ethan’s movements were calculated yet merciless, his claws cutting down any rogue in his path. Jacie’s spell held firm, the dome of silence trapping every sound, every cry of pain, within its confines.

When the last rogue fell, Ethan felt a surge of satisfaction. But it was fleeting; he knew the real fight was yet to come.

They regrouped at the barn’s edge, and Jacie’s face tensed as she glanced toward the looming shadows beyond. Her concentration was unbreakable, but something in her expression shifted, and Ethan felt a prickle of unease.

“Ethan,” Jacie said, her voice barely above a whisper, though it carried a note of urgency that cut through the silence. Her gaze flicked to the forest beyond the barn, eyes narrowed. “There’s something else… another presence nearby. It’s stronger than any of the rogues we’ve faced so far.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened as he turned, scanning the darkness with a newfound sense of dread. A presence was hovering just beyond the tree line, hidden but powerful, its aura thick with malice. Whatever it was, it was watching them, its intent chillingly clear.

His instincts flared, every nerve on high alert. Whatever lurked beyond that barn was no ordinary rogue. The air grew heavier, as if in anticipation of the battle to come, and Ethan’s heart pounded with the primal certainty that their fight was far from over.
