Chapter 51 - Facing Fears

The next morning, Sophia awoke to a familiar ache in her muscles, a gentle reminder of the passionate night spent wrapped in Ethan’s arms. The soft light streaming through the curtains felt almost blinding, and her stomach growled, a stark reminder of the hunger she’d ignored in her blissful stupor. She pushed herself upright, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, and noticed Ethan was already awake, watching her with a gentle smile.

“Good morning, beautiful,” he said, his voice a deep rumble that sent a thrill down her spine.

“Morning,” she replied, her voice still thick with sleep. She tried to stretch but winced as the soreness spread through her body, a reminder of their intensity last night. “I think I need a massage or something. Everything hurts.”

Ethan chuckled, a light, warm sound that made her feel a bit better despite the discomfort. “I can help with that,” he offered, sitting up and moving closer. “But first, let’s get you something to eat.”

As he slid out of bed, Sophia couldn’t help but admire his toned physique, the muscles in his back and arms rippling as he moved. He made his way to the kitchen, and she could hear the clattering of dishes as he began to prepare breakfast.

The aroma of sizzling eggs and crisp bacon wafted into the bedroom, drawing her out of bed and into the living room. She took a seat at the kitchen island, her stomach growling louder as she watched him work.

“Do you need help?” she offered, though the sight of him expertly flipping eggs made her think he had everything under control.

“I’ve got it covered. You just relax,” he said with a reassuring smile. “You’ve earned a break after last night.”

Sophia felt a flutter of warmth at his words, but as she took in the lightheartedness of the morning, her mind began to drift. Thoughts of that evening crept in, and a heavy weight settled in her stomach. Tonight was her first shift back at the bar, and she couldn’t shake the nerves bubbling beneath the surface.

Once Ethan had served up a hearty breakfast, they sat together at the island, digging into the delicious food. As they ate, Ethan studied her, the concern in his gaze evident. “Sophia, can we talk about what happened last night?” he began cautiously.

Sophia met his eyes, her fork pausing mid-bite. “What do you mean?” she asked, trying to play it cool, but she could feel the tension in her chest rising.

“I just want to make sure you understand the risks involved,” Ethan continued, his tone serious. “What we did… it’s not something that happens every day, especially considering you’re human. The fact that you went into heat is… it’s unusual, and I’m worried about what that means.”

Sophia shrugged, pushing her plate away slightly, feeling the anxiety churn in her stomach. “I don’t know, Ethan. I feel fine. I mean, yes, I’m sore, but I didn’t think it was a big deal,” she replied, attempting to brush off his concerns.

Ethan frowned, his brows furrowing in frustration. “It’s not just about being sore. You need to understand that your body is changing, and it could have implications. I’m worried that if this happens again, it could be dangerous for you.”

“I get that you’re concerned,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady, “but right now, I’m more worried about tonight—my first shift back at the bar. I haven’t seen Luke since everything happened, and I don’t know how he’s going to react.”

Ethan leaned closer, the intensity of his gaze piercing through her worries. “You don’t have to face this alone, Sophia. I’ll be there with you if you want. We can talk to Luke together.”

She shook her head, the anxiety bubbling within her. “I don’t want you to make a big deal out of it. I just want to get through the night without any awkwardness.”

“Awkwardness is unavoidable, but that’s okay,” he replied gently. “You can do this. You’re stronger than you think. Just remember that I’m here for you, no matter what.”

Sophia took a deep breath, allowing his words to sink in. “I appreciate it, really, but I can’t shake this feeling of dread. What if he doesn’t understand? What if he thinks I’m weak?”

Ethan reached across the table, taking her hand in his. The warmth of his touch sent a soothing wave through her. “Luke is your boss, and he’s also your friend. He’ll understand more than you think. And if he doesn’t, then I’ll step in. You don’t have to worry about that.”

She nodded, though her stomach twisted with uncertainty. “Okay, but I don’t want you to fight my battles for me. I need to handle this on my own, even if it’s uncomfortable.”

“I get that,” Ethan replied, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. “But just remember, it’s okay to lean on me when you need to. You don’t have to carry everything by yourself.”

Sophia felt a wave of gratitude wash over her, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly. “Thanks, Ethan. I’ll keep that in mind.”

As they finished breakfast, the conversation shifted to lighter topics—funny stories from their past, favorite movies, and dreams for the future. It felt good to laugh and share moments that reminded her of the bond they had forged.

After breakfast, Sophia found herself getting ready for her shift, a mixture of excitement and anxiety coursing through her. She slipped into a simple black dress that hugged her curves in all the right places, a touch of confidence boosting her spirit. Ethan watched her with admiration, a smile spreading across his face.

“You look stunning,” he said, his eyes sparkling with genuine appreciation.

“Thanks,” she replied, feeling a blush creep across her cheeks. “It helps to hear that.”

They left the house together, Ethan’s hand finding hers as they walked toward the bar. The sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden hue over the pack land, and for a moment, Sophia felt at peace. She could do this. She would face Luke and the bar and whatever else came her way.

As they approached the entrance, her heart raced. “Are you ready?” Ethan asked, his voice steadying her nerves.

Sophia took a deep breath, squeezing his hand tightly. “As ready as I’ll ever be.”

“Then let’s do this,” he replied, and together they stepped through the door, the familiar sounds of laughter and clinking glasses greeting them.

Sophia’s eyes scanned the room, landing on Luke, who stood behind the bar. He looked up as they entered, his expression shifting to one of surprise and concern. Her heart raced as she braced herself for the confrontation ahead, but with Ethan by her side, she felt a glimmer of hope. Whatever happened next, she knew she wouldn’t be facing it alone.
