The morning light slipped through the window blinds, casting soft streaks across Ethan’s face as he lay beside her, his dark hair tousled, one arm draped over his chest. Sophia blinked sleepily, momentarily disoriented, but then warmth flooded her heart as she remembered the events of the night before. She looked at Ethan, the peacefulness on his face, and felt a surge of gratitude.
Ethan was her anchor in the chaotic storm that had become her life. She found herself captivated by the way his lashes cast shadows on his cheeks, the small crease between his eyebrows relaxed now in the morning stillness. She wanted to reach out, trace her fingers along the lines of his jaw, memorize every inch of him. He had come for her without hesitation, put himself between her and whatever dangers lurked in the shadows, and she realized just how deeply she had begun to rely on him—not just as a protector but as a friend, a confidant, and, perhaps, something much more.
Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, breaking her from her quiet admiration. She glanced over to see Jacie’s name flashing on the screen. Careful not to wake Ethan, she slipped out of bed and grabbed her phone, heading downstairs. As she made her way to Ethan’s kitchen, her mind replayed the events of the previous night, her stomach twisting with a mix of anxiety and relief.
“Hey, Jacie,” she said, answering the call as she entered the spacious kitchen. It smelled faintly of cedar and coffee, and she breathed in the comforting scent.
“Good morning, superstar,” Jacie greeted, her tone teasing. “You sound different—relaxed, happy. What’s going on?”
Sophia let out a small laugh, sinking onto one of the stools by the kitchen island. “It’s... complicated. Last night was... intense.”
“Oh, now you have to tell me everything,” Jacie insisted. “Especially if it’s Ethan-related. Spill!”
Sophia hesitated for a moment, then took a steadying breath. “Well... last night, Luke tried to kiss me.” She let the words hang in the air, giving them a weight she hadn’t fully grasped herself.
There was a beat of silence before Jacie’s voice came through, laced with a mix of surprise and excitement. “Wait—Luke? Your boss? You mean the Luke you work with?”
“Yeah, that Luke,” Sophia confirmed, rubbing her forehead. “It was... really unexpected. I thought he was just a friend, someone I could trust, but he... I don’t know. It felt like he didn’t care how I felt at all. He was just pushing himself on me.”
“Oh, no.” Jacie’s voice softened. “Sophia, are you okay? That must have been terrifying.”
Sophia let out a shaky breath. “I’m fine now. Ethan showed up. He... he sensed I was upset and came in right as Luke tried to... well, anyway, Ethan punched him. Hard.”
Jacie gasped, but Sophia could hear the grin in her voice. “Oh my god! Ethan just swooped in like some sort of superhero? And punched Luke in the face? I love it!”
Sophia laughed despite herself. “Yeah, it was... intense, to say the least. Ethan’s been amazing. He always seems to know when I need him, even when I don’t say a word.”
Jacie let out a dreamy sigh. “I swear, you’ve hit the jackpot. You’ve got two gorgeous guys vying for your attention, and meanwhile, I’m over here struggling to find one gentleman who’ll just text back.”
Sophia shook her head, smiling at Jacie’s dramatics. “Trust me, you don’t want a guy like Luke. He’s got... issues.”
“Sure, but you can’t deny he’s easy on the eyes,” Jacie teased. “And then there’s Ethan. I mean, come on, you’re living in a fantasy right now! Don’t pretend you haven’t thought about it.”
Sophia’s face flushed at Jacie’s words. “It’s... complicated,” she murmured. “But yeah, Ethan is... different. He’s strong and steady, and he makes me feel safe.”
“See, now that’s what I’m talking about,” Jacie said, her voice warm with encouragement. “You deserve someone who makes you feel all those things, Sophia. After everything you’ve been through, you should be with someone who treats you like you’re the most important person in the world.”
Sophia felt her heart swell. “Thank you, Jacie. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“Well, if you need me to kick Luke’s butt for good measure, you know where to find me,” Jacie laughed. “But really, if Ethan’s making you happy, then don’t hold back. Go for it.”
Sophia chuckled, a sense of peace washing over her. “I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks, Jacie.”
After they said their goodbyes, Sophia set her phone on the counter and took a deep breath, a small smile lingering on her lips. She was lucky to have Jacie’s unwavering support, and it felt good to have someone to confide in.
“‘Two hot guys,’ huh?” a voice drawled behind her, laced with a hint of teasing amusement.
Startled, she turned to see Ethan leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed, a slight smirk on his face. His eyes glinted with mischief, but there was a softness there too, something warm and inviting.
“How long have you been standing there?” she asked, feeling her cheeks flush.
“Long enough to hear about this glowing review I apparently got.” He pushed off the wall and crossed the room, stopping in front of her, his gaze never leaving hers. “So, you think I’m a ‘hottie,’ huh?”
Sophia rolled her eyes, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. “Don’t let it go to your head.”
Ethan chuckled, his hand coming up to gently brush a stray hair behind her ear. “I’ll try not to. But for the record, you’re not so bad yourself.”
Sophia’s heart fluttered at the warmth in his gaze, the way he looked at her as though she was the only person in the room. For a moment, they just stood there, close enough to feel the warmth radiating between them. She felt safe, anchored, and the events of last night felt like a distant memory.
After a beat, Ethan’s expression turned more serious. “About last night... I just want you to know that I’ll always be there for you, Sophia. Whatever happens, no one’s going to hurt you—not as long as I’m around.”
Her chest tightened at his words, gratitude and something deeper filling her heart. “Thank you, Ethan. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
He gave her a soft smile, his hand still lingering near her cheek. “You don’t have to find out,” he murmured. “I’m not going anywhere.”
The warmth of his hand, the steady confidence in his eyes—it was everything she needed. In that moment, she knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, she wouldn’t be facing them alone. Ethan would be right there, by her side.
