Sophia’s shift at the pub had dragged on, leaving her with barely enough energy to walk home. The cool night air wrapped around her, and she tugged her coat tighter, letting her mind drift to the idea of a hot shower and a warm bed. Her feet moved on autopilot as she turned down the dimly lit path leading toward her apartment.
As she neared the edge of town, though, something strange caught her eye. In the faint glow of the streetlamp, she saw two figures standing near the tree line, their silhouettes rigid and tense. She squinted, and her stomach dropped when she recognized them—Luke and Ethan. They were standing face-to-face, and from the energy radiating between them, it was clear they weren’t having a friendly conversation.
Sophia hesitated, instinct telling her to stay back. But she couldn't bring herself to leave, too curious about what was happening.
Suddenly, Luke’s body trembled, his muscles rippling beneath his shirt. Sophia’s eyes widened as his form shifted, contorting in a way that was both mesmerizing and terrifying. In an instant, his human shape morphed into a towering, fur-covered figure—a werewolf. A low, guttural growl escaped him as he shot one last glare at Ethan before disappearing into the dense forest.
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. She hadn’t known. How could she not have known? She stumbled back, eyes wide, as the enormity of what she’d just witnessed sank in. Her mind raced, piecing together fragments of memories and conversations. Luke wasn’t just an ordinary person, just like Ethan—he was a werewolf too.
Ethan, seemingly sensing her presence, turned around and met her shocked gaze. His expression softened as he motioned for her to come closer, and she hesitated, still reeling from what she’d just seen. But something in his calm gaze soothed her, grounding her in the whirlwind of emotions.
"Sophia," he said softly, "I know you have questions."
Still in shock, she approached him, her mind racing with a dozen things she wanted to ask but couldn’t quite form into words. He walked with her, silent at first, allowing her the time to gather her thoughts as they moved down the familiar path toward her apartment.
Finally, she found her voice. “I… I had no idea Luke was like you,” she managed, her voice a mix of wonder and disbelief. “I mean, I knew he was intense, but… a werewolf?”
Ethan gave a slight nod, his expression darkening momentarily. “Yes. He’s… well, he’s been dealing with a lot. The way he feels about you, the way he feels about me…” He hesitated, carefully choosing his words. “It’s complicated for him.”
Sophia shook her head, still trying to comprehend it all. “Why didn’t he tell me? Why didn’t you tell me?”
Ethan sighed, his hand brushing against hers. “It wasn’t my place to reveal Luke’s secret. But I understand it must have been a shock.” He hesitated, as though weighing how much to share. “Our kind… we don’t always reveal ourselves openly. There are risks involved.”
Sophia swallowed, her mind a tangled mess of questions. “Do… do you think he’s okay? He looked so angry.”
“He’s dealing with it in his own way. Luke’s strong,” Ethan reassured her, though his tone was measured. “He’ll come around, eventually. For now, let’s give him some space.”
She nodded, still a little shaken but comforted by Ethan’s calm. After a few moments of silence, a new question formed in her mind—one that had been lingering since the beginning of her discovery of this world. She glanced up at Ethan, feeling her cheeks flush.
“Your wolf,” she murmured, glancing away as though embarrassed. “What’s he like? I mean… could I ever meet him?”
Ethan’s lips curved into a small smile. “You’ve already met him, in a way,” he said, his eyes glinting in the moonlight. “The way I feel around you, how protective I am… that’s my wolf, too. He’s the part of me that feels connected to you, that feels this bond.”
Sophia’s heart fluttered, but her curiosity only grew. “But… could I ever see him? I mean, actually meet him?”
He paused, looking thoughtful. “I’d like that,” he said softly. “In fact, I’ve been wanting to bring you to my pack’s land. If you’re ready, that is.”
Sophia blinked, caught off guard by the offer. “Your pack’s land?”
He nodded. “Yes. My family, my pack—they’ve all been waiting to meet you. It would be a chance for you to see more of this world, to understand me and my life better.” He reached out, taking her hand in his. “And you’d get to meet my wolf, as you wanted.”
Her heart leapt at the idea, though she felt a hint of nervousness. But as she looked into Ethan’s eyes, she felt a wave of reassurance, a sense of calm that only he seemed able to provide.
“I’d love that,” she whispered, her heart racing at the thought.
Ethan’s smile was gentle, his thumb tracing circles on her hand. “We’ll plan a day soon. But for now, let’s get you home. You’ve had enough surprises for one night.”
They continued walking, and Sophia’s heart felt lighter than it had in days. With every step beside Ethan, she felt as though she was moving closer not just to his world, but to a new life filled with wonder, possibilities, and a love that seemed boundless.
