Sophia’s head was spinning. The weight of Ethan’s words clung to her like a heavy fog, suffocating and confusing. Part of her wanted to bolt, to run as fast as she could away from the mess she’d found herself in, but another part—the part she didn’t want to admit—was intrigued. Something about Ethan felt magnetic, unavoidable. The logical part of her brain screamed that this was dangerous, irrational. Yet, she was standing there, unable to move away from him.
The silence stretched between them, and Sophia shifted uncomfortably. She knew she had to say something, but how could she respond to what he’d just revealed? He was offering her an escape, a choice to walk away from this supernatural world. But if she did, could she truly leave this behind? Could she forget the way his presence made her feel like she was both safe and on the edge of something terrifyingly exhilarating?
“I don’t know what to say,” she finally admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. She looked down at her feet, avoiding his intense gaze.
Ethan took a slow step closer, his breath steady despite the tension in the air. “You don’t have to say anything right now,” he said gently. “I know this is a lot. I just needed you to understand what’s happening. But you have time, Sophia. You don’t have to make any decisions tonight.”
Sophia nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. “It’s just… a lot to take in. This isn’t the kind of thing you can just drop on someone.”
Ethan chuckled softly, though there was no humor in his eyes. “I know. Trust me, I didn’t plan for this either.”
That confession caught her off guard. It was easy to forget that Ethan might be struggling with this as much as she was. She looked up at him, searching his face for any hint of deception, but all she saw was sincerity. For a moment, the world around them seemed to quiet, and all that was left was the undeniable connection between them.
She wanted to ask more questions, to get to the bottom of what being his “mate” truly meant, but her thoughts were too jumbled, her emotions too raw. Instead, she took a deep breath and stepped back, putting some distance between them. “I think I need some time to process all of this.”
Ethan nodded, though she noticed the slight tension in his jaw, as if holding back his own desires. “Of course. Take all the time you need.”
There was something final in his words, something that made her chest tighten. She offered him a weak smile and turned to leave. Each step she took felt heavier than the last, as if something was pulling her back toward him. But she kept walking, forcing herself to break free of the strange pull between them.
When she was far enough away from the park, she finally allowed herself to breathe deeply. The night air was cool against her flushed skin, and for a moment, she reveled in the silence. It felt like she had been holding her breath ever since she first met Ethan. Everything in her life had been turned upside down, and now she was faced with a choice she wasn’t ready to make.
As she rounded the corner near her apartment, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She fumbled for it, grateful for the distraction. It was a text from Jacie, her classmate from psychology.
Jacie: Hey! Haven’t seen you in class much. Everything okay? You should come out with us tomorrow night. Get your mind off things ;)
Sophia stared at the message, chewing on her lip. Jacie was the type of girl who could distract anyone from their problems, at least for a little while. A night out sounded tempting. Maybe she could pretend, just for one night, that her world wasn’t filled with supernatural revelations and impossible choices.
But even as she thought about it, a nagging feeling told her that no amount of fun or distraction would change the reality of her situation. She was tied to Ethan now, whether she liked it or not, and running away wouldn’t change that.
Before she could respond to Jacie’s text, her phone buzzed again. This time, it was a message from an unknown number.
Unknown: We need to talk. Meet me at the bar tomorrow. Luke.
Sophia’s stomach dropped. Luke? What did he want now? She hadn’t spoken to him since the heated argument between him and Ethan at the bar, but the intensity of his voice during that exchange had lingered in her mind. Luke clearly knew more than he was letting on, and it seemed like he wasn’t done with whatever he had to say.
She hesitated for a moment, then typed a quick response: Fine. See you then.
Sophia shoved her phone back into her pocket and sighed. It seemed like no matter what she did, this new world she had been thrust into was determined to keep pulling her deeper. Whether it was Ethan’s claim that they were mates or Luke’s cryptic messages, her life had become anything but ordinary.
When she finally reached her apartment, she leaned against the door and closed her eyes. The exhaustion from the day washed over her, but her mind refused to rest. She knew tomorrow would bring more questions, more uncertainty. But there was one thing she couldn’t deny anymore.
She was curious.
And curiosity had a way of leading her exactly where she wasn’t supposed to go
