Sophia lay in bed that night, staring at the ceiling, her mind unable to settle. The events of the day played on a loop in her head, a chaotic mix of emotions, confusion, and disbelief. She had always thought her life was hard enough—balancing school, work, and her mother’s medical bills. Now, she was being told she was the destined mate of a werewolf. It sounded absurd. No, it was absurd.
But the most unsettling part was that something deep inside her believed it. She didn’t want to admit it, but ever since she met Ethan, something had shifted in her. The way he looked at her, the strange but undeniable connection, the comfort she felt in his presence—it all made a weird kind of sense now. But how could she accept it? She was human. She had plans for her future, dreams that had nothing to do with a supernatural world she hadn’t known existed.
She sighed, rolling over to check the time. It was past midnight, and she had work early in the morning. Luke. Just thinking about her boss made her stomach knot. He had been acting so strange today, especially around Ethan. Their tense conversation, the way they seemed to be in a quiet power struggle—it all made her wonder how much Luke knew. How do they even know each other?
Sophia groaned and rubbed her temples. There were too many questions, and she had no idea where to start. Tomorrow, she decided. She’d ask Luke tomorrow. He clearly knew something, and maybe—just maybe—he’d give her some answers.
The next morning, Sophia arrived at work earlier than usual, determined to confront Luke before her shift started. The pub was quiet, the smell of coffee brewing in the back. Luke was already there, sitting at the bar with his laptop open, reviewing invoices or schedules—whatever bosses did before the chaos of the day began.
Sophia hesitated for a moment, watching him. He looked calm, his usual collected self, but there was a tension in his posture that hadn’t been there before. Finally, she cleared her throat.
“Hey, Luke. Can we talk for a minute?”
He looked up, his piercing green eyes locking onto hers. For a moment, she thought she saw a flicker of something—guilt, maybe? Or was it regret? Either way, he nodded and closed his laptop.
“Sure, what’s up?”
Sophia glanced around to make sure no one was within earshot. She didn’t want to make a scene, especially after yesterday’s drama. “It’s about Ethan,” she said, keeping her voice low. “And you. I overheard part of your conversation yesterday, and... well, I think you need to tell me what’s going on.”
Luke’s expression hardened, and for a second, she thought he was going to deny everything. But then he sighed, running a hand through his short blonde hair. “Sophia, this isn’t something you want to get involved in.”
“Well, I’m already involved, aren’t I?” she shot back, crossing her arms. “Ethan says I’m his... mate.” The word felt strange on her tongue. “And I have no idea what that means or why you seemed so angry about it. I deserve to know.”
Luke clenched his jaw, looking like he was weighing his options. Finally, he leaned back against the bar and exhaled slowly. “Fine. But you’re not going to like it.”
Sophia’s heart raced as she waited for him to continue.
“Ethan is a werewolf, yes. And he believes you’re his mate. A mate, in their world, is basically the one person they’re destined to be with for life. It’s... intense. And permanent.” Luke’s voice was calm, but his words were sharp, like he was holding something back.
“And you?” Sophia asked. “How do you fit into all of this?”
Luke’s eyes darkened. “I used to be part of their world. Not as a werewolf, but I was... involved. I left it behind a long time ago, but Ethan and I have a history. Let’s just say we don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things.”
Sophia frowned, trying to piece it all together. “So why were you so angry yesterday? Why do you care if Ethan thinks I’m his mate?”
Luke hesitated, his eyes flickering with something unreadable. “Because you have a choice, Sophia. He may be a werewolf, but you’re human. You don’t have to be part of his world if you don’t want to. Don’t let him make you feel like you’re trapped in some kind of destiny you never asked for.”
The words hit her hard. Choice. That was the key, wasn’t it? Ethan had made it sound like this was fate, like they were destined to be together no matter what. But Luke was offering her a way out, reminding her that she didn’t have to follow the path laid out for her. She had her own life, her own plans.
But a small voice inside her whispered that it wasn’t that simple. She did feel something for Ethan, something more than attraction. It was confusing and overwhelming, but it was real. And that scared her more than anything.
“I don’t know what to do,” Sophia admitted, her voice barely a whisper.
Luke softened slightly, the tension easing from his posture. “Take your time. Don’t rush into anything. You’re strong, Sophia. You don’t need anyone making decisions for you.”
She nodded, grateful for his words. But deep down, she knew this wasn’t over. Not by a long shot.

The rest of the day passed in a blur. Sophia went through the motions at work, serving customers, cleaning up, all while her mind spun with thoughts of Ethan and Luke. The weight of their words pressed on her, making her feel like she was caught between two worlds—one she knew and one that was terrifyingly unfamiliar.
As her shift ended, Sophia stepped outside into the cool evening air, her heart heavy. She couldn’t avoid Ethan forever, but she needed time. Time to figure out what she wanted, who she wanted to be.
Just as she was about to start her walk home, her phone buzzed. A message from Ethan.
“We need to talk. I’ll be outside your apartment tonight.”
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. Tonight. She wasn’t ready for this conversation. But deep down, she knew it was coming, whether she liked it or not.
With a deep breath, she started walking, her heart racing with anticipation for what lay ahead.
