Chapter 26 Run-in With Adam
Chapter 26 Run-in With Adam
The convoy moved at breakneck speeds through Arclight streets, alerting the Police, who curiously chose to observe and warn drivers rather than intercept them.
After about an hour and a half of driving, the cars pulled up by the side of a secluded road with tall trees and bushes on both sides. A few figures stepped out of the two lead cars and entered the forest. A few minutes later, the door was opened for Andrea and Lucia.
"The lab is still about 10 minutes from here, from this point on, there's some very heavy surveillance, so we'll have to rush in, but based on my observations, the forest is safer and faster than the roads," Lucia explained to Andrea, who was curiously observing the environment.
"How did Tony get to it then?" Andrea asked turning to Lucia.
"He drove to the front door" Lucia shrugged.
Andrea nodded and considered for a moment, "I'll go in first, follow behind in ten minutes," she instructed.
Lucia gave her a deep glance and called out to the others, "Rally up!" as the group of armed men and women gathered around her, Andrea ran into the bushes and disappeared from their vision.
Adam sat in a lab with a deep frown on his face as he worked. His computer display screen had a human neural map on it, various areas lighting up as he typed furiously.
His jaw tightened with each passing second, and soon his face was a full scowl.
"Arghhh" letting out an angry roar, he pushed the computer and everything on his desk to the ground, his chest heaving furiously.
"FCK you Adam! Curse your mother; curse your ancestors. You deserved to die! You deserved to dieee!" he roared wildly to the ceiling.
After a few minutes of wild venting and roaring, he stopped, and his expression slowly evened out.
"Zina is mine. Your legacy is mine. I will take everything that rightly belongs to me" he muttered, then calmly rose and began to pick up everything on the floor.
Just then the door was opened and a figure walked in. If Gabriel, Aika, or anyone from Arclight were to see this figure, they would be shocked. It was Zina!
Well, not Zina, but a perfect resemblance of her. The only difference between them was the bland expression on this figure's face and her stiff walk.
"Intruders are approaching the compound" she reported.
Adam looked up at her and his expression softened. But then his eyes caught sight of her lifeless eyes and he moved his gaze away in disgust.
"Take care of it, Rep" he ordered dismissively.
Rep nodded and left, closing and securing the lab door behind her.
Barely a few seconds after she left, Adam, who was picking up a cord from the ground, froze. He slowly rose to a standing position, his pupils at the left corner of his eyes but he dared not turn around.
A low 'whoosh' sound came from behind him and he leaned slightly to the left, turning around dexterously, he parried with the cord in his hand.
A harpoon was caught in the rope leaving him staring blankly at him in confusion. He moved his gaze slowly upwards from the harpoon to see Andrea standing about twenty feet away from him with her signature grin on her face.
Suddenly, Andrea jerked her hand backward, and the harpoon was pulled back by the rope attached to it, and she grabbed it with her free hand.
"Hello, Adam," she greeted.
Adam stood staring at her in shock, with a dull glow in his eyes.
"Among the mysteries of Adam, you hold the top spot. He would not withhold anything from me, aside from clues about your origins" Adam muttered.
"No," Andrea shook her head as she walked to a computer beside her and powered it on.
"Adam gave YOU nothing" she replied. "Everything you have, you stole,"
"I deserve them for what he did to me" Adam growled in a low tone.
"Did to you?" Andrea squinted and paused her actions.
"He created you," she said in a low tone.
"No. He duplicated himself. He wanted to live forever." Adam turned away from Andrea.
The two stood in silence for a long time before Andrea broke it. "C001," she called gently.
"DO NOT CALL ME THAT!" Adam roared.
"Clone Adam," Andrea responded challengingly.
Adam fumed but he did nothing.
"I can help you, and you can leave and live" she offered.
Clone Adam stared at her a long time, then suddenly smiled.
"Your big heart, is your greatest flaw. You tolerate everything, you love everything, and your loyalty is absolute. Is it worth it?" he asked, a grin slowly forming on his face as his shoulders raised and he raised his chin.
"For years, you slaved for a man who had nothing on you but arrogance. Think of all that you could have been, all you could have done. Was it worth it?" he asked again.
"The taste of power after his death must have been intoxicating. But your puppet is growing, whatever will you do when he grows beyond your control? Will you go back to being a slave? Is it worth it?"
His confidence regained, he took a step towards Andrea, inwardly curious what she was doing on the computer she had turned on. But Andrea raised her gaze from the screen to him, her eyes cold and threatening.
Adam paused his feet and frowned, she wasn't even listening to him!
His expression faltered and he gritted his teeth. He had an irrational fear of her, something seemingly embedded into his code.
He watched her work, his expression thoughtful. Suddenly, his eyes flashed once, and his smirk curled upward. His eyes turned impassive, and in an amazing burst of speed, he rushed towards her.
As he did, the speakers of the lab sounded. The calm, arrogant tone of the speaker easily distinguishable.
"The human body has unlimited potential. But the human brain limits all we can do. Speed, strength, and reflexes, all capped by the brain to protect the body"
Adam reached Andrea just as the voice faded away. He threw a punch at her face, but she simply leaned backwards without even looking up at him. Adam was not deterred by a single miss; he struck rapidly, his punches a torrential blur, but somehow, Andrea dodged all of them without even moving her feet.
Eyes wide in fury, Adam rushed at her to grab her, but at this time, Andrea seemed to have finished what she was doing and raised her head. Giving him a deep meaningful glance, she took a simple step backwards and jumped.
Adam rushed forward, grabbing the air. His gaze followed Andrea leaping above him, and he struck towards her from an unbelievable angle.
Just then, his vision blurred as her hands moved in the air. His movement froze and he watched with a grimace as she landed on a table. Glancing back at him with a regretful expression, she rushed for the door and out of the lab.
Clone Adam stood frozen watching her go. He touched his neck and lowered his hand, revealing blood.
"She could have killed me," he muttered in a low tone, his expression shocked as he stared at his own blood.
Fortunately, he stopped his actions in time preventing the harpoon from piercing deep.
He raised his head to the open door of the lab and muttered in bafflement, "Who are you?"
