Chapter 53

Chapter 53
Vance's Point of View

Flynn was just about to turn and walk out, her back straight, her expression cool as ice, when my hand shot out and gripped her wrist. She froze, her breath catching slightly at the contact, and I could feel the subtle tension in her body. She was on the edge, ready to retreat, but I wasn’t done yet. Not when everything inside me felt like it was coming apart.

“Hey,” I said, my voice low, but with an edge that betrayed my nerves. “Can we talk?”

She didn’t immediately respond. Her eyes locked onto mine, cold and calculating, but there was something more behind that steel wall. I could see the way her pulse quickened at the edge of her throat, the slight shift of her stance, as if she was debating whether to pull away or stay.

I didn’t want to let her go. Not yet. Not like this.

“Vance,” she said after a moment, her voice cool, clipped. “What is it that you want? You’ve got your own mess to sort out with Mona, and I—"

“I know,” I interrupted, trying to steady my breath. “I know it’s a mess. But this—” I motioned between us with a jerk of my head, my gaze never leaving hers. “This isn’t just about Mona. It’s about you. About me. About everything I’m not saying because I don’t know how to say it.”

Her jaw tightened, and for a moment, I wondered if she would snap, tell me to get out of her way. But instead, her eyes softened, just a little, and her posture relaxed ever so slightly.

“I don’t know what you want from me, Vance,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “We both know I’m not some easy fix for your problems. And I’m definitely not interested in playing the part of your... rebound.”

Rebound. The word stung, more than I expected. But there was a truth to it too. I wasn’t entirely free of the mess with Mona, but that didn’t change how I felt when Flynn was near. There was something about her, something that pulled me in, something I couldn’t put my finger on but couldn’t ignore either.

“No,” I said, my voice steady but full of sincerity. “That’s not it. I’m not looking for a rebound. I’m looking for something real. And I think you feel it too.”

She tilted her head slightly, her eyes narrowing as if weighing my words. Her lips parted, but she didn’t speak right away. Instead, she seemed to be absorbing everything in the silence between us. It was quiet, too quiet, and all I could hear was the rapid beat of my heart, pounding in my ears, urging me to do something, say something, anything to bridge the gap between us.

"I’m not asking for anything big, Flynn,” I continued, taking a small step forward, closer to her. “I just need to know if you feel it too. If you feel… this pull. Between us. Because every time I look at you, I feel like I’m being drawn toward something I can’t escape.”

She swallowed, her throat working as she looked away for a moment, clearly struggling with something she didn’t want to acknowledge. But then her eyes flicked back to mine, and I saw it—the vulnerability she’d been trying to hide. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to make my chest tighten. She was just as affected as I was.

Her voice was quiet, softer now, and when she spoke, it almost felt like a confession. “I’m not looking for complications either, Vance. I’m not looking for another mess. But…” She trailed off, taking a breath, her eyes not leaving mine. “But I can’t deny there’s something there. Between us.”

I could barely breathe. My mind raced, my heart thrumming louder with every word she said. Did she really just admit that? Did she actually feel it too?

“I don’t want to complicate your life,” I said, my tone almost pleading, even though I hadn’t meant for it to come out that way. “But I’m not asking for everything right now. I’m just asking for a chance. A chance to see where this could go.”

For a moment, she didn’t say anything. The silence was maddening, stretching between us like a tangible thing. I had never been good at waiting, but I was desperate for her to say something, anything that might give me hope.

And then, after what felt like an eternity, Flynn stepped closer, just a few inches, her eyes not leaving mine. She didn’t look cold anymore. The walls she had put up were slowly crumbling, and I could feel it—this shift, this moment where everything between us became raw and real.

“I don’t know what this is, Vance,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “But I’m not blind. I can see it too. And I’m not sure if it’s something I should trust. But right now… right now, I can’t pretend it’s not there.”

I took a breath, letting her words sink in. My heart was pounding in my chest, and my fingers were itching to reach for her, to pull her closer. But I held back, not wanting to rush this. Not wanting to make her feel cornered.

“I’m not asking for trust right now,” I said quietly. “I just need to know if you’re willing to see where this goes. See if there’s something more.”

Flynn’s gaze softened, her lips parting as though she was about to speak, but then she closed the distance between us, her hand moving cautiously to rest against my chest. The warmth of her touch sent a jolt of electricity through me, and I had to fight to keep my composure.

“I don’t know what will happen,” she whispered, her eyes flicking to my lips, then back to my eyes. “But I’m willing to find out.”

I didn’t waste a second. I closed the gap between us, capturing her lips in a kiss that was soft at first—tentative, unsure—but quickly grew more urgent. I could feel her hesitation, but there was something else there too. Something raw and untamed. Her fingers threaded into my shirt, pulling me closer, as if she couldn’t resist either.

My pulse was racing, my mind spinning as I kissed her deeper, letting everything else fade away. The mess with Mona, the uncertainty of everything around us—none of it mattered anymore. It was just Flynn and me, standing in the middle of the storm, trying to make sense of this pull between us.

When we finally broke the kiss, both of us breathing hard, she looked at me, her expression a mixture of surprise and something more—something dangerous.

“Vance…” she said softly, her voice trembling with an emotion I couldn’t quite place.

“Flynn,” I whispered, brushing a strand of hair from her face, my hand resting gently on her cheek. “I don’t have all the answers. I don’t know where this will lead. But I do know one thing. I want to find out. With you.”

Her eyes searched mine, and I saw something there—a quiet agreement, a softening. She didn’t pull away, didn’t retreat into the coldness she had used to shield herself. Instead, she closed her eyes for a moment, her breath shaky as she leaned into me.

“Okay,” she whispered, almost to herself. “Let’s see where this goes.”
