A cold queen
A cold queen
Chapter 162
Ruby’s POV
What met my eyes next was the flying projectile in the air that went speeding past the roof of the car I was in moments ago and headed straight for the house.
The world seemed to just stop for a terrifying second, the grey sky framing that body of the dark flying metal, and the next thing I saw was the house exploding up in hot flames before my very eyes.
The blast hit me so hard it felt like i was slapped away with a wall of pure pressure throwing me backward and off my feet.
I lost my footing and went tumbling down face-first to the ground, my skin skidding against the gravel and dirt, kicking up a thick cloud of dry dust as the heat from the house blasted me right in the face.
My skin felt like it was peeling from the sheer temperature of the burning house, choking the air right out of my lungs.
‘’Nooooo!!!’’ I growled, my voice filled with a raw pain as my voice broke into abroken ugly sob and in the next second I was rushing to my feet again, totally ignoring the black blurs around me as the vampire guards moved behind me trying to find the predator.
I couldn’t feel my body at that moment, not even the feel of the hot flames burning the soles of my shoes nor the fire that licked at the hem of my dress as I ran toward the front porch that wasn't even there anymore.
It was just a collasped house now. ‘’ARRRRRRRRHHHH!!’’ A blood-curdling, ground-shaking scream tore its way through my throat, blasting a gust of air from it that swept through the burning, collapsed house like a hurricane, turning the fire off in an instant. It was like my lungs had enough power to just blow the oxygen right out of the ruins, leaving nothing but black burning wood and furniture and then the blackened bricks.
‘’Lucas!!! Dad!!!!’’ I called out, my voice cracking and sounding small against the loud ringing in my ears. I watched as some of the vampire guards began to move debris from the house, throwing broken beams and shattered bricks aside with their bare hands, trying to find a clue where they were even as my heart seemed to be sinking further down my limbs the longer I didn't hear the both of them respond to my call.
The silence was the worst part of it all. ‘’I can’t lose anyone else… please..’’ I began sobbing, the hot tears making muddy streaks through the thick black soot on my cheeks as I clawed at a piece of the burnt doorframe.
But just then I sighted movement and the flash of shiny black scales under a heavy pile of brick wall that seemd to be from the sitting room. ‘’Lucas!’’ I called out as I dashed forward just as Lucas pushed hard at the debris that covered him in his partial dragon form.
Debris and dust went flying everywhere, clattering against the still hot ground as he shot up into the air for a second while I stood to the ground watching him, my head bent all the way back with my hands clutched against my chest with hope before Lucas came crashing back down and rolled a few feet from me.
His black scale-filled hands that had been transformed midway to his dragon wings and were wrapped tightly around his body suddenly uncurled from him and I could feel a massive wave of relief flood through my veins so fast my knees went weak.
But instead of falling I rushed to both of them, my heart hammering against my ribs so hard it hurt.
Lucas groaned in agonizing pain with his breath coming in short gasps as his back and half his scales had been burnt off from the fire, leaving raw red patches of skin and charred skin that made my tears flow faster. My dad, whom he had hidden in his embrace seemed to be fairly okay as he rushed to his feet, trembling and covered in sooth to help Lucas up.
‘’Lucas I'm so sorry..’’ I sobbed as I got close to him, my hands shaking so much I didn't even know where to touch him as he was so badly injured and looking like he was barely holding on to consciousness.
Without even thinking, my hand stretched forth in front of me, and my flames came pouring out of my hands like a fountain and falling onto Lucas.
It wasn't my regular flames that burned or destroyed things, it was warm and felt like a steady warm heat that started under my skin and moved through him and i honestly didn’t know how i knew to do that i just followed my instict.
He slowly stopped groaning and writhing on the floor as the light hit his burnt skin, knitting the scales back together right before my eyes.
‘’You will be fine okay.. I'm here..’’ I murmured as I felt every inch of my skin come alive and my eyes seemed to get sharper, picking up every movement in the shadows of the street.
Even the environment now felt like I could feel the energy inside everything around me like the buzzing of the hearts of humans tucked away in their homes and refusing to come out.
And that was when my ears prickled as I heard the sound of commotion and the heavy thud of boots behind me, most likely the vampire guards finally interacting with the group who had had the audacity to bomb my childhood home, burning down the memories along with it, hurting Lucas and my dad and almost killing them in the process.
A dark coldness slowly settled in my stomach and for the first time, I wanted to do more than just let it go. I wanted to make them pay for touching those close to me
As my mind kept replaying all what had happened, it seemed to be feeding into the rage boiling in my system.
My flames slowly stopped pouring from my palms as the healing light faded, and I stood to my feet, the gravel and broken glass crunching under my boots.
My dad looked like couldn't take his eyes off me, he was staring like he was seeing something different, something he didn't even recognize in his own daughter and it made my chest tighten for a second before the coldness took over again.
Lucas remained covered with the remnants of my flames like it was a second skin, giving him a glowing red look that pulsed with every shallow, pained breath he took.
“Watch them,” I ordered, and I noticed how much colder my voice sounded, I didn't wait for a reply as I turned around and headed straight for the sound of fighting and resistance I was hearing on the other side of the parked cars.
As I passed the side of the parked cars, I could see my reflection in the dusty, cracked glass of a side mirror. I stopped for a heartbeat, my eyes were now a multitude of colors, swirling around, and my horns were out again, curling and twisting with the colors of the rainbow.
To top it off, I now had a crown of actual fire sitting right atop my head and pulsing slowly. A strange peace suddenly flooded my system as I moved and it slowly even felt like I wasn't just walking again but instead gliding through the air, my feet barely touching the ground as I moved.
The scene of dead bodies soon came into sight as I rounded the corner. Most of them were from the opposing parties of weaker dragons who had been torn apart by the vampire guards, their blood staining the dust of the road in dark patches.
But then there was still one last dragon standing in the center of the street. His aura showed me that he was strong, much stronger than the ones lying in the dirt, and immediately his eyes glued on me.
He seemed to have met the greatest shock of his life, his jaw tightening as he took in my appearcance first and then the horns and the fire crown. “Leave him,” my voice coldly ordered the vampires around him.
They didn't even hesitate and they heeded my command immediately, drawing back into the shadows to leave the lone middle-aged dragon standing alone. He stood his ground, staring at me with a cold burning anger in his eyes.
“Do not expect me to beg just because of who you turned out to be. I must settle the score regardless, a mate for a mate...” The dragon growled, his voice low and vibrating as a snarl that echoed off the empty street.
He suddenly rushed at me, probably at his highest speed, his claws extended and his face a mask of pure fury. But to me, he looked extremely slow, like he was barely moving at all.
I didn't even have to lift a muscle or raise my guard. With just one thought, I had him frozen in his tracks, his body locking up mid-stride and I calmly covered the rest of the gap between us, my feet hovering just over the blood on the ground.
“You reek of revenge, your soul tarnished with darkness, but that is no excuse for you to attempt to take the life of anyone close to me,” my words seemed to echo as my feet seemed to elevate even more off the ground.
“Rest now.” My last words were a whisper, and without the dragon even having a chance to fight back or plead, his eyes rolled back in their sockets.
His chest carved in with a sickening thud and just like popping a button through cloth, his heart came snapping right out of his chest, neatly leaving the gaping hole open there as he died on the spot.
My eyes didn't blink as I watched so calmly as his body dropped to the ground followed by his still-beating heart right next to him in the dust. “I wouldn't have anyone close to me dying again,” I ended.
I was just about to turn around and walk off when from the corner of my eyes I sighted a black shadow suddenly evaporating from the body of the dead dragon.
