Chapter 198 Suicide?
Chapter 198 Suicide?
Clare's POV
My head felt like it was splitting into two when I regained consciousness. I could hear footsteps and the loud commotion not far away which added to my problem.
The darkness that welcomed me broke my heart. I thought I would finally be better when I regained consciousness again but who knew that it would only get worse as the darkness was too thick.
Someone suddenly tapped my shoulder. “Miss Clare, can you try opening your eyes?”
My breath hitched. The voice was familiar and I recognized it as my attending doctor's voice. But what was he saying? Wasn't my eyes already open?
“Miss Clare?” He called again.
I followed his instructions and did as I was asked to. The bright light that hit me was so overwhelming and it forced me to shut my eyes tightly.
“Miss Clare, is the light too bright?” The doctor asked.
I nodded, my hand clenched tightly around the duvet.
The doctor's receding footsteps flooded into my ears.
“Why don't you try again?” The doctor suggested.
I inhaled deeply and opened my eyes. The room was neither dim nor bright. The lightning was just enough and my eyes adjusted slowly to it.
When I could see clearly again. My eyes moved around the room. It was my normal ward, just as I had left it.
That was when excitement finally hit me. I could see again. The thought alone left me grinning from ear to ear.
But the excitement didn't last as my eyes fell on my father. Has he been like this since I fell into a coma?
The doctor traced my eye sight and patted my shoulder. “His brain cells are responding so there is a hope of surgery soon.”
I nodded even though my heart still felt heavy.
“What about you? Do you feel any pain on any part of your body? Like your head or eyes?” The doctor queried.
I pointed at my head. “My head hurts badly.”
“It's normal for patients to experience headaches after waking up from a coma. I'll prescribe pills for you later,” the doctor said.
I nodded without glancing at him.
“Does your eyes hurt at any time?”
“When it comes directly in contact with light,” I replied.
Silence stretched in between us.
“Can you look at me, Miss Clare?” He asked. “I need to conduct a few basic tests now.”
I shifted my gaze towards him without a word.
He nodded and brought out two of his fingers. “How many fingers can you see?”
“Two.”
The doctor changed the fingers to five. “What about now?”
“Five.”
The doctor waved his both hands in front of me.
“Ten.”
The doctor nodded and picked up a small white board. “Why don't we try something else?”
He turned the board to face me and there were words written boldly on the board.
“Can you read the words as I point them?”
I didn't say anything and he then took my silence as a yes and began pointing the words.
“My name is Clare and I am in ward 2343.” I read out as he pointed at the words.
They were critically clear so I had no issues reading them.
He nodded slowly. “Your eyesight improved well. But we aren't done yet.”
The man took down the board and brought out another one. The words on those ones weren't too bold or small and I was able to read them easily.
The man removed those ones and brought out another one. This time they were so small and I had to strain my eyes. It took me time to read and also made my head ache.
The doctor patted my hair when he saw me straining. “Take your time, Miss Clare. The fact that you can see is more important.”
I bit the inside of my cheeks and nodded.
The doctor packed up his things and handed it to the nurse with him. He was already heading to the door when it suddenly opened and Reed walked in.
My forehead creased. Reed? The hockey coach? We had no business together so there was meant to be no reason for him to visit me.
To my surprise, his face lit up when he saw me. “Thank Goodness, you're awake.”
“Coach, you came to see me?” My voice shook for reasons I couldn't explain.
Reed walked further into the room and turned to the doctor, ignoring me completely. “Doctor, how is her condition?”
The doctor arched his brow. “And who might you be?”
“A… friend?” Reed replied, glancing in my direction.
Reed stared at me for a few seconds and then shifted his gaze to the doctor. “If you will excuse me, I'll bring her boyfriend here.”
He turned around and walked out of the ward immediately.
My stomach flipped once at the thought of my boyfriend. Rhys? Is he no longer angry with me?
The doctor turned to face her. “He was very supportive of you when you were in a coma. I hope you can appreciate that.”
I nodded, even though I didn't understand what that meant.
The commotion outside got louder and it was making my head ache.
“Doctor, what's wrong?” I asked, grabbing my head.
The doctor shook his head. “A girl jumped off a building. The hospital is still trying to know if it is suicide or murder.”
I lowered my head. Suicide? The girl had to be in a very terrible place or position to have such thoughts.
I fidgeted with my finger, my heart hammering loudly in my ears. That could literally be me anyway.
I didn't know I was chewing hard on my lower lips until the doctor placed his hand on mine.
“It's not you, Clare. You're fine and you have people to support you.”
I blinked. People? Do I really have that?
The door suddenly burst open before I could say anything and Reed walked in, followed closely by Mark.
I held my breath, my eyes refusing to leave the door. It didn't take long before it landed on the overly familiar eyes and for a moment, I forgot the noise and my fears.
