Chapter 195 If you want to see Clare alive
Chapter 195 If you want to see Clare alive
Rhys's POV
I chuckled. “You aren't a bad mother after all.”
“Rhys?” Mandy's voice cut through the room.
I clenched my jaw. Her voice alone filled my stomach with disgust.
“I'm going to ask you a simple question and it would do you a lot of good to answer me honestly,” I said, ignoring her question. “Where is Clare?”
Silence stretched in the room.
“I asked you a question, Mandy. Where is Clare? What did you do to her?” I demanded when she still didn't say anything after a while.
“You really amaze me. Not like your silly younger brother does,” Mandy whispered. There was mockery in her voice but I couldn't be sure who it was meant for.
“You really don't want to do this, Mandy.”
“Of course, I don't. But you need to understand that's something called passion. You should understand the best after all you're so much invested in hockey,” she said.
“Passion?” I repeated. “I'm quite curious. What's the thing you have so much passion about?”
She chuckled so loud that my ear ached from just listening to it. “You know how to ask the right things. I should have taken you with me if I knew you would be much better in the future.”
My grip on the phone tightened. “You don't even feel remorseful?”
“For what?”
Her voice was lucid and blank. Like she knew what she did but couldn't care less.
I blinked away the tears clouding my eyes. She wasn't worth it, she couldn't be.
Mark tapped my arm and I turned towards him.
“Your wound and… Clare. We should get to the hospital first.” He mouthed.
I nodded, turning towards the door. How could I have forgotten something so important in the blink of an eye.
“You asked a question, Rhys and I think I should answer that.” Mandy's voice came alive again. “I want to own a company. A company that would bear my name.”
I stiffened. That was her dream? That was her passion. I know everyone has different passions and dreams but some things are just so absurd to the ear.
“I know you think it's absurd but you haven't even heard much about it from me. Owning a company requires more than you think. A lot of passion, risk and ruthlessness. It has no much difference with hockey.” Mandy explained.
I continued my journey towards the door. “So help me understand how you want to achieve your passion. By bullying others? Or playing people for a fool? Or stealing from people? Or using people?”
“Yes.” Mandy yelled with a lot of excitement in her voice. “You understand me the best, Rhys. That's the risk and ruthlessness I just mentioned.”
I snickered. “This is what you call… passion?”
“You found it amazing too, right?”
“No. I find it disgusting. Do you know the worst part? You're just someone with a mentally deranged and delusional mindset. I'll advise you to visit a psychiatrist soon.” I spat, hatred engraved into my voice.
“So you think you could have been the captain of the best hockey team or you would have made it to the top of the list without being ruthless?” Mandy snapped.
“I'm not ruthless, Mandy. I was never ruthless, the title, the rank and the fame, I only needed the passion and risk to achieve it. Most importantly it was my determination and hard work that brought me here.” I said in one breath.
Mandy burst into a fist of laughter. She laughed for a long time and then cleared her throat.
“Stop deceiving yourself, Rhys. Your father is a very rich tycoon. Do you think his fame didn't shape your career?” Mandy asked.
“My father has nothing to do with my career.” I shot back, my voice rising.
“Oops! Seems like your childhood was tough. Did he lock you up and stop you from going to hockey practices?” Mandy mocked.
I wanted to snap at her when something suddenly clicked in my mind.
“Did you do the same thing to Zane?” My voice came out surprisingly low, almost inaudible.
“Not at all.” Mandy replied, curtly. “I did quite the opposite to him. I locked him up for days without food just so he could learn the basic skills of hockey. You don't think I'm wicked right?”
Wicked? That was a very easy term to use on her. I couldn't even find the right word to use at some point.
“Too bad, he still ended up as a failure. It would have been nicer if he turned out like you.” Mandy added.
I bit the inside of my cheeks hard to swallow my rage. By that time we were already downstairs.
Reed rushed towards us when he saw me. “Why are you moving around?”
Mark placed a hand on his lips and I pointed to the phone.
He nodded after a few seconds and Mark finally let him go.
“I'm sorry, Coach.” Mark mouthed in apology and I bowed my head slightly.
“Who was that?” Mandy demanded.
“You wanted to own a company. Why didn't you meet my father? He was your husband and would surely make your delusional passion into reality.” I said, ignoring her question completely.
“Don't change the topic, Rhys.” She hissed. “Who are you with?”
The sound of the emergency van’s siren filled the air before I could reply to her.
“You called the cops on me?!” Mandy shrieked.
I blinked. The emergency siren and the police car’s siren sounded almost the same and it would only be a paranoid person that would think they are the same.
Mandy hung up on me the next second before I could ask any questions.
“Is Clare with her?” Mark asked.
I bit the inside of my cheeks hard. I had forgotten the most important thing in the blink of an eye. I knew Clare was with her but forgot to confirm it.
“I forgot to confirm,” I whispered.
The van pulled up in front of us and I got inside before Mark would start asking me questions.
One of the nurses helped me settle in but just when they began treating my wound. Zane's phone chimed.
“Come to the hospital's rooftop with your brother. If you want to see Clare alive.” The message read.
