Chapter 65
Chapter 65
Charlotte really wanted to roll her eyes at her.
What an act.
She clearly knew Charlotte's true identity already.
If the other party didn't want to acknowledge her as a sister with no blood relation, Charlotte naturally didn't want to force the connection either.
She nodded politely but distantly, treating it as a greeting.
Victoria lost her previous enthusiasm toward Charlotte and waved her hand, gesturing for Ellie to sit down.
She asked, "Your health has always been weak. Now that you're back in the country, you should rest well. There's no need to make a special trip to see me."
Ellie suddenly smiled shyly, "How could I not come see you? After all, you're not just an elder I know, but also my future family."
"What do you mean by that?" Victoria's smile had already faded.
Ellie looked up, pretending to be confused. "Have you forgotten? Richard and I have an engagement arranged by both families' elders."
As soon as she said this, everyone was stunned.
Gossipy looks bounced back and forth between Charlotte and Ellie.
Richard frowned, displeasure flickering in his eyes.
Victoria smiled calmly. "Of course, I remember that."
"All these years, I've been the only daughter Bliss Group has publicly acknowledged, so this engagement is naturally mine to fulfill."
Ellie still wore a smile, like she'd won a battle, and glanced at Charlotte.
"I'm bringing this up today because I think we've reached the age for marriage. Shouldn't we discuss the engagement properly?"
After she finished speaking, everyone looked at Charlotte in unison, their eyes carrying a hint of schadenfreude.
Even if she'd won Victoria and Richard's favor, the old engagement was still there.
Victoria could refuse to honor Bliss Group's reputation and deny the engagement, but that would mean the Davis family going back on their word and abandoning Bliss Group's daughter.
And Charlotte would become the bad woman who destroyed the engagement.
Either way, it was trouble.
"Ms. Brown." In the midst of silence, Richard suddenly spoke. "You seem to have forgotten something."
Ellie's heart sank, suddenly feeling an ominous premonition.
She bit her lip and asked softly, "What?"
"The engagement back then was made by my grandfather to the Brown family's biological daughter. You're just the Brown family's adopted daughter. This engagement doesn't belong to you no matter what."
Richard's tone was merciless, tinged with impatience.
Ellie's face paled slightly, her eyes reddening. "An adopted daughter is still a daughter. My sister has been lost, and I'm the current Bliss Group heiress."
Richard sneered. "If Mr. and Mrs. Brown hadn't lost their daughter back then and seen you were about the same age as their daughter, wandering outside pitifully, would you have been lucky enough to be adopted by them?"
"You've occupied this Bliss Group heiress identity and enjoyed the good life all these years. Now you want to take this engagement too? That doesn't make sense, does it?"
He walked expressionlessly to Ellie, seeing her eyes redden and her body trembling slightly, but remained unmoved.
"Since you're here, it saves me a special trip to tell your parents. I only recognize the real Brown family daughter for this engagement. If it's you, then I'm canceling this engagement."
Ellie froze completely.
Victoria kept her head down, silently drinking tea. As an elder, it wasn't appropriate for her to say harsh things, but this attitude clearly showed she supported Richard.
Ellie bit her lip hard, tears swirling in her eyes.
She choked out, "How can you treat me like this? If you don't like me, why didn't you call off the engagement before?"
Charlotte also looked at Richard.
She was equally curious about this question.
"I didn't let him." Victoria suddenly spoke up.
She looked at Ellie. "Richard always wanted to break off the engagement. I thought it wasn't appropriate because of your poor health—calling it off might make you think we looked down on you. Now that your health is much better than before, let's forget about this engagement. I'll visit your parents personally another day to discuss it."
Ellie swayed, almost falling to the ground.
She couldn't stay any longer, so embarrassed she wanted to crawl into a hole!
Originally, she thought that by bringing up this engagement with the Davis family before her family acknowledged Charlotte's identity, maybe Victoria would still keep her promise and honor the engagement.
She never expected that even without knowing who Charlotte was, they'd rather not form an alliance with Bliss Group.
Ellie was both resentful and humiliated.
She clenched her teeth and, unable to hold back in her impulsiveness, blurted out, "Charlotte is just a daughter from a farm, and a fake heiress the Smith family didn't want. Are you really going to marry her into your family?"
Richard's face turned completely cold, and he directly grabbed Charlotte's hand.
"The woman I like is the best in the world. If you say things like that again, don't blame me for having someone throw you out."
The Davis family relatives all gasped.
Showing Bliss Group so little respect?
"How can you treat me like this..."
Ellie looked devastated, as if about to faint.
Just then, footsteps suddenly came from outside.
Charlotte looked up toward the door.
Seeing the two people the butler brought in, she smiled slightly. "Dad, Mom."
The entire room instantly fell silent.
The Davis family's relatives recognized the visitors.
The chairman and the chairman's wife of Bliss Group.
They should be Ellie's adoptive parents—why was Charlotte calling them Mom and Dad?
Victoria stood up in confusion, looking at David and Helen, whom she hadn't seen in a long time.
"Mr. Brown, Mrs. Brown, what's this about..."
David stepped forward and gently, lovingly pulled Charlotte over.
"Mrs. Victoria Davis, let me introduce you. This is my long-lost daughter Charlotte, Bliss Group's true heiress."
"She's our company's heir and the only one who can fulfill the engagement between our families."
Helen nodded along, standing beside him, looking at Ellie with slight displeasure.
They'd sent someone to pick up Ellie, only to learn she wasn't waiting at the hotel but had come to Davis Manor instead, and guessed something would go wrong.
Sure enough, after listening outside for a while, they discovered trouble had indeed occurred.
Helen never expected that this usually obedient and sensible daughter would run here to bring up the engagement on her own and attack her biological daughter!
Everyone's eyes widened, looking at Charlotte in disbelief.
Bliss Group?
Wasn't she from a farm? How could she be Bliss Group's true heiress!
Those who had just mocked Charlotte were even more afraid and embarrassed, worried Charlotte would tell her parents, and they'd offend this young lady with such a powerful background.
Victoria was stunned at first, then burst into laughter.
"Good, good, good! I knew it—the person I liked couldn't be ordinary! She and Richard already had an engagement, and they managed to like each other without knowing each other's identities. What fate!"
Ellie's whole body went cold as she clenched her teeth.
Charlotte glanced at her coolly, her voice calm. "Now, do you still have any objections?"
Ellie couldn't say a word, her lips trembling.
David frowned at her.
"This is your sister. You shouldn't be so rude. Apologize to Charlotte."
