Chapter 228 CLEAN UP ON AISLE ONE
KAI’S POINT OF VIEW.
Officer Rhodes shook his head vigorously, his eyes wide and timid; no longer the earlier bravado of the officer who’d talked us down earlier. He appeared to want to pee his pants, too. I noticed the officers behind him seemed….happy at the exchange too.
“Good dog.” Dominic pats him on the back, smoothing the invisible dust on his uniform. “Now, will you have your officers assist my friends here to get the mess in there cleaned up? My crew is on vacation; I’d call them but…you have hands.” Rhodes whimpered with yet another vigorous nod.
“I didn’t hear you.
“Yes, sir.” He squeaked, his voice painfully high like a mouse on helium. “We’ll get on it, sir.” He stuttered, jumping to his feet to walk behind us. However, that foolish nurse stepped in yet again.
“Are you serious?” he scoffed, still limping from his fall earlier. “You’re going to let them leave like that? I told you this guy killed someone!” he hisses. Dominic looks from Rhodes to the nurse, an eyebrow raised with an amused expression.
“Is this some sort of soap opera? Or perhaps a bumblebee show?” He chuckles, stepping right in front of the nurse. “Who the hell are you?”
The nurse tried to stand straighter, lifting his shoulders in a clear pathetic attempt to compete with Dominic’s height. He failed; woefully. “I-i-I’m the head nurse, Tony. And I have a duty to report any crimes committed in front of me. I saw the gun in the guy’s hand, and I heard the shot. He killed someone!” Tony all but yelled, pointing a finger at me.
Father stepped forward, his body in a fierce, protective stance. “Keep your voice down!”
“No…” Dominic chuckled again, stopping Dad with a raised hand. “You look like you’re the type of guy who loves to sing.” Tony stumbled, taking a step back with his brows furrowed, as confused as the rest of us.
I didn thave time for the bullshit, but I knew not to leave. Not without everyone else with me. Only they knew what lay outside. “I….I don’t understand.”
“Come on.” Dominic gestured with a clap, bringing everyone’s attention over to us. They all turned, their eyes even wider. They could see the blood on my slacks and Aurora’s still-breathing body in my arms. “Tony here has a song to sing, and I think everyone should hear it….sing for us.”
“No…what are you doing?” Tony whispered, pulling himself closer to us, clearly seeking a way to hide from their glares. “Stop it.”
“You wanted everyone to know Kai here killed someone, right? So, go ahead. Tell them.”
“What the hell are you doing, Dominic?” Dad hissed. “My son and my daughter-in-law need to get to the hospital right now.”
“Oh, all of you can leave. I still need to supervise clean up, anyway.” He shooed us away, his glare still on a clearly intimidated Tony, while Rhodes and his officers did clean up…whatever that meant. I raced out of there without a second thought or word, the footsteps of Dad and Everleigh swiftly behind me.
"The back exit," Everleigh directed, her heels clicking rhythmically as she led the way now. "Silas has an armored SUV waiting at the loading dock. We can't take the car we brought over here; there might be reporters outside already.”
“There are,” Dad announces, helping us open the door. We stepped out to the lone back strip of the small shrink’s hospital; the waiting SUV was a couple of steps away.
