HEDGES
HEDGES
Chapter 72
Alessia's pov
I opened my eyes to meet Ophelia standing before me. She jerked slightly, like my consciousness had scared her.
“Y-you are up….’’
I refused a word, trailing my eyes around the room for nothing in particular.
It was still vivid in my memory, all the revelations of Ma'am Amira and the scary truth behind my connection with the lycans.
My gaze flailed back to Ophelia, and she stepped back oddly.
“What is the matter with you?’’ I threw at her, unable to overlook her weird attitude.
‘’I..uh… Hedges.’’ She paused a bit. ‘’Hedges returned.’’
I immediately knew who she was talking about but what has that gotten to do with me?
“I'm sorry, Alessia. I didn't mean to do it. I was just too excited it slipped off my lips.’’ She mumbled, though in a fairly audible voice.
I couldn't make out the least of what she spoke about. Though it agitated my emotions, I managed to keep still with a straight face.
‘‘What have you done?’’ I inquired, my pulse escalating as anticipation swelled in my heart.
“I told him. I told Hedges you woke up, and he's gone ahead to inform the Alpha.’’ She stepped back.
A sound knock came on the door before I could make out a word, and the intruder went swinging open before we even granted any permission. A man showed up, taking me by immense surprise.
“H-Hedges?’’ Ophelia called with sincere surprise in her voice.
“Hey, my love.’’ He approached to give her a hug which she couldn't reciprocate.
‘‘Wh-what are you….doing here?’’ She asked once he broke the hug.
But he turned to face me instead of replying. I almost choked on saliva, averting my stare to Ophelia.
“She's the one, isn't she?’’ He eventually spoke.
“What are you doing? Come with me.’’ Ophelia snapped, making to pull him out but he held back.
“It's good to see you. I'm Hedges, Ophelia's mate.’’ His lips curved into a handsome manly smile, while he stretched his hand for a handshake.
I briefly shook his hand without a word, although a thousand questions crossed my mind in that wavering moment.
“I see you're well, heard you only past out from shock some moments ago.’’ He stepped forward a bit, as if preparing himself for whatever he was about to say.
“I work as a commander in the pack forces, and I heard you were a Luna in your pack so you must know what that means. I understand that you may be Ophelia's family, but that doesn't stop the rules from including you.’’ He paused.
“You want me to go and see you Alpha is it?’’ I took the chance to say.
“Absolutely!’’
I let a smirk drive up on my lips. “I never said I wasn't going to see him, I only asked for a little more time.’’
“What for if I may ask?’’ He almost interrupted me.
I swatted a glance at Ophelia and she literally jerked. She quickly stepped forward, taking her mate by his arm.
“Come with me, I'll explain everything to you.’’
“It's fine.’’ I sounded, commanding both their gazes. “I'll see the Alpha like you want me to, but you have to do one thing in return for me.’’
“Now this is sounding like you're drawing a truce?’’ He creased a brow.
“It wouldn't be nice if you saw it that way. Let's just say I'm seeking your help.’’ I shrugged.
‘‘Go on.’’
‘‘I'm not lost. I left my pack with my own clear mind and right now they're searching for me.’’ I started.
‘‘What do you mean?’’
It's not for treachery, or banishment like you and your officials might have suspected. I fled on my own cause it was the only right thing to do.’’
‘‘I still don't get you….’’
“Hedges, will you come with me? I said I'll explain everything to you.’’ Ophelia spoke up, tugging his arm.
“So what do you want?’’ He directed relentlessly at me, ignoring her.
“All I want is to keep my whereabouts a secret from my husband. He'll likely send a message to your Alpha, or he could have sent one already. You can't inform him about my presence here.’’ I spelt out.
‘‘And under what conditions?’’
‘‘Hedges.’’ Ophelia called.
‘‘What could have been your offense against your husband that makes you want to keep your location anonymous?’’ He asked further.
“Hedges!!’’ Ophelia screamed, pulling him with a greater force this time.
“Can you listen to me this once?’’ She added, breathing hard while her chest heaved along.
Hedges pulled her out himself without any other word. A sigh heaved off my lips, my palms finding my face.
This was going to be a whole process to phrase through. It wouldn't be easy to earn their trust and no one could blame them for that. I was trying to keep my whereabouts a secret from my pack which could be for any evil reason. But if only they knew.
“Are you okay?’’A voice spoke out of nowhere, causing me to jerk from me in shock.
“Ma'am Amira!’’ I called out, drawing a breath in relief.
“I take it his reaction wasn't very warm.” She dictated.
“I wouldn't blame him.’’ I sighed, clearly seeing through Hedges' view.
‘‘We might need to tell them everything in the end, just like Ophelia is doing.’’ Ma'am Amira said.
‘‘What?’’
‘‘Just Hedges is not enough to convince the Alpha. We might need to inform the whole officials of your relationship with Thompson, then together they might convince the Alpha. That might be the only way out.’’ She explained.
‘‘I don't mind then. Anything to stop Thompson from getting to me first.’’
“I'll speak to the men myself. You all just wait until you get my call.’’ Hedges instructed, earning a nod from every one of us.
He swatted one more weird glance at me before stepping out of the house.
I turned to Lady Amora immediately. She was the one by my left.
“Do you think he was convinced?’’
“You don't think so?’’ She asked back.
“Sure he was. I saw to it that he believed everything I said.’’ Ophelia jumped out in defense.
“Then I guess we should indeed sit back and wait for husband call.’’ Ma'am Amira concluded.
