Chapter 74 Chapter 74
"And where do you think you are going?" Adrian's words halted my steps mid-way.
I already saw it coming. As soon as I stepped into the living hall and found him sitting on the couch, selecting the decoration, I knew he would stop me.
The walls of this house were no longer bringing me peace. I felt suffocated with Adrian's scent all around. I just needed to breathe air that didn't belong to him. I had to get out, even for an hour.
"I don't think it is necessary to tell you everything" I snapped.
"It is" he stood up and walked to me "I have every right to know where you are going because you are my fiancée."
My jaw twitched.
"Not a prisoner" I spat back and folded my arms to my chest. "I have agreed to marry you, Adrian, that doesn't mean you can control my life" I told him.
"I am just asking, where are you going?"
My nose flared as I stared at him for a long minute.
"I am going to a gynecologist" I told him the truth because there was no point in hiding it. He would come to know about it anyhow.
"Why?" He further inquired.
My eyes narrowed at him as my fists tightened.
"Since I have come to know about this pregnancy, I haven't visited any doctor. I need a check-up"
"There is no need for it" he announced.
"Have you lost it, Adrian?" I asked "No matter what issue we have with Lucien. We cannot take it out on this child. Okay?"
"Anyway it is not going to survive" he confessed.
"It is!" I stated "I will make sure of it"
Silence.
A long silence.
I started walking towards the door but he caught my wrist midway.
"Did I tell you that you can go?"
"I didn't even ask you, Adrian!"
"Stay home" he said in a stern voice "I will call a private doctor. It’s not safe for you to be out, not until we are married"
"Why don't you say that you are feeling insecure, Adrian"
"You can take it however you want. But I am not allowing you to go out there alone. If you really want to visit a doctor, I will come with you"
My eyes narrowed at him. I wanted to punch his face but I couldn't.
"Mumma" Aurora's baby voice broke my chain of thoughts. "Are you going somewhere?" She asked with pouty lips and teary eyes.
I remained silent for a heartbeat, looking down at her small, innocent face.
"I wanna go too," she whispered, her tiny hand reaching out to hold my finger. "Please."
My heart melted and sank at the same time. She was the one suffering the most in this twisted game. At an age when she should have been going to school, making new friends, and playing in the park, she was being kept like a little prisoner. I just couldn't breathe whenever I think about the kind of life I am providing her.
"Okay," I whispered "You’re coming with me."
I just couldn't say no.
Adrian’s face darkened when he saw me leading Aurora toward the car, but he didn't argue. The drive to the clinic was suffocating. Adrian sat behind the wheel like a stone statue, while Aurora sat stiffly in my lap. She no longer feels free around Adrian the way she used to.
When we reached the gynecologist’s clinic, my heart started pounding in my chest. Adrian checked us in, resting his hand on the small of my back, as if marking his territory in a room full of strangers.
"Cynthia Vale?" the nurse called out.
I stood up, but as Aurora tried to follow, Adrian’s hand dropped onto her shoulder, stopping her.
"Aurora stays here with me," he said. It wasn't a suggestion, it was an order.
He doesn't want to leave a room for me to escape with Aurora.
"Mummaaa" Aurora cried.
I looked at Aurora. She looked terrified, her eyes darting toward the hallway. I knew I had to be calm for her. If I fought him here, he would make her pay for it later.
"You go ahead." Adrian added "I will keep her entertained. You wouldn't want her to be bothered by all the medical talk, would you?"
"It’s okay, baby," I said, forcing a smile "Stay with AD for a few minutes. I will be right back out. Be a brave girl for Mumma, okay?"
She nodded slowly, her bottom lip tucked in as Adrian picked her and settled her into the plastic chair next to him.
I would have never left her alone if this were not so important.
I let out a deep breath and walked into the doctor's room. Adrian's gaze followed me until the door swung shut behind me.
The doctor was already waiting for me.
"Hello, Cynthia. How have you been feeling?" she asked kindly.
"I’m fine, Doctor," I said, and turned my head around to be sure that the doors were closed.
Silently, I reached inside my purse and brought out a file. Placing it on the table I slide it towards the doctor. My heart was thumping so loudly I was sure she could hear it.
Without any question, she just took the file and placed it in one of her drawers and slightly nodded her head. I nodded my head back to her and crossed my fingers.
"Let’s get you on the table for the ultrasound, Cynthia," she said loudly, her voice returning to its professional tone for the benefit of anyone listening at the door.
I lay back on the bed for the doctor to start the ultrasound. I shivered when the cold gel hit my skin.
A bitter-sweet smile made its way to my lips when I saw a little life on the monitor.
My baby.
"The baby is fine but you need to take care of yourself, Cynthia" the doctor said "Take medicines and meals on time"
I nodded.
My eyes closed on their own when I felt a hand clamp around mine. I held it tightly while I felt the life moving inside me hoping it would bring the peace and calm we all want.
