Chapter 67 When The Truth Finally Lands

Chapter 67 When The Truth Finally Lands
Lina’s POV

The world didn’t make sense right away after they spoke.

Not because I didn’t hear them.

I did.

Every word.

Every pause.

Every careful tone they used like they were trying not to break something already fragile.

But my mind didn’t accept it immediately.

It just… sat there.

Waiting for it to feel real.

I don’t remember standing up.

I don’t remember sitting down again.

I only remember Clara holding my hand tighter at some point, like she was afraid I would disappear if she let go.

And I remember Daniel’s face.

Still.

Not shocked anymore.

Just… heavy.

Like he had already begun processing something I hadn’t fully reached yet.

And Maya…

Maya didn’t look surprised.

That was the part that stayed with me the most.

Not because she was happy.

Not because she was calm.

But because she looked like she had been waiting for confirmation of something she already suspected.

I finally heard the nurse excuse herself, her voice softer now, more distant, like she knew she had delivered something irreversible and there was nothing more she could do here.

The door closed again.

And the silence came back.

This time, it wasn’t the same silence from before.

Before, it had been waiting.

Now it was aftermath.

I looked down at my hands.

They weren’t shaking anymore.

That worried me more than when they were.

Because now it felt like my body had gone quiet just to survive what my mind couldn’t handle yet.

Clara was the first to speak.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“Lina…”

I didn’t respond immediately.

Not because I didn’t hear her.

But because I didn’t know what to say that wouldn’t fall apart halfway through.

“I don’t understand,” I said finally.

My voice sounded distant.

Not like mine.

Clara squeezed my hand again. “It’s okay.”

But it didn’t feel okay.

Nothing about it felt okay.

Daniel stepped closer slowly.

Careful.

Like I might break if he moved too fast.

“I know this is a lot,” he said quietly.

A lot.

That word felt too small.

I shook my head slightly. “No. It’s not that I don’t understand… I do.”

A pause.

“I just don’t feel like it’s real.”

Maya finally moved.

Just a step forward.

Her voice was calm when she spoke, but it carried something different now.

Certainty.

“Lina… it is real.”

I looked at her then.

Really looked at her.

And for the first time, I saw something in her expression that wasn’t suspicion.

It was something closer to inevitability.

Like she had been piecing it together long before I ever walked into this room.

“That’s why you kept asking,” I said quietly.

It wasn’t a question.

Maya didn’t deny it.

She didn’t confirm it either.

She just held my gaze.

And that silence was answer enough.

I swallowed slowly.

My throat felt dry.

My chest felt too tight.

But my body still wasn’t reacting the way I expected it to.

No tears yet.

No breakdown yet.

Just… stillness.

Clara leaned closer. “Lina, talk to me.”

I blinked slowly.

Talk.

What was there to say?

“I thought…” I started, then stopped.

Because I didn’t even know what I thought anymore.

Daniel’s voice softened even more.

“You thought it was something else,” he finished for me gently.

I nodded slightly.

Because that was the truth.

Or at least… part of it.

I thought it was stress.

I thought it was my body reacting to everything that had already happened.

I thought I had already paid the price for my choices.

But this…

This was different.

This was something continuing.

Something I had convinced myself was gone.

Something I didn’t even know I was still carrying.

My hand moved slowly to my stomach again.

This time, I didn’t even realize I was doing it at first.

Until Clara Daniel and Maya noticed.

And no one stopped me.

Because now it meant something else entirely.

I whispered, barely audible, “So… it was never gone.”

Clara’s grip tightened.

Daniel looked away for a second, like he was trying to steady himself.

Maya didn’t move at all.

And I finally felt it.

REALITY.

I closed my eyes briefly.

Just for a second.

Trying to catch up with what my life had just become.

When I opened them again, nothing had changed.

The room was still the same.

They were still here.

I was still here.

But everything inside me…

Wasn’t.

The silence after my words didn’t feel empty anymore.

It felt full.

Full of everything nobody wanted to say out loud, of the reactions of some truths.

I opened my eyes slowly again.

Clara was still holding my hand.

Daniel was still standing close, but not too close.

Maya was still watching me like she was reading something I couldn’t see.

And me…

I was still trying to understand how I got here.

“It doesn’t make sense,” I said again, softer this time.

Daniel shook his head slightly. “It does… unfortunately, it does.”

I flinched a little at the word unfortunately.

Because that made it feel real in a way I wasn’t ready for.

Clara’s voice broke slightly when she spoke.

“But… how? After everything… after what we were told…”

She didn’t finish the sentence.

She didn’t need to.

Maya answered instead, calm but firm.

“Medical outcomes aren’t always final in the way we assume they are.”

That was all she said.

No explanation beyond that.

Just stating the fact.

I looked at her sharply.

“So what are you saying?” I asked quietly. “That everything I believed was wrong?”

Maya didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.”

That one word landed hard.

My chest tightened again.

But I still wasn’t crying.

It was strange.

Like my emotions were delayed.

Like my body hadn’t decided how to respond yet.

Daniel stepped closer again, carefully.

“Lina,” he said gently, “no one is blaming you for anything.”

I let out a small, shaky breath.

“That’s not what I’m worried about,” I said.

Because I wasn’t thinking about blame.

I was thinking about everything that came before this moment.

The abortion.

The lie.

The consequences I thought I had already lived through.

“I made a decision,” I said quietly. “I acted on it. I moved on from it.”

My voice cracked slightly at the end.

“And now you’re telling me it… didn’t end?”

Clara squeezed my hand again, harder this time.

Like she was trying to anchor me.

But I could feel myself slipping into something else.

Maya’s voice softened just slightly.

“It didn’t end the way you thought it did.”

I looked down again.

My hands felt foreign now.

Like they belonged to someone else, i guess someone I used to be.

“I don’t know how to process this,” I admitted quietly.

And that was the first fully honest sentence I had said since the result.

Daniel nodded immediately.

“You don’t have to process it all right now.”

But that wasn’t true.

Because everything around me was already forcing me to process it.

Whether I wanted to or not.

A door opened again briefly outside.

Footsteps passed.

Life continuing.

Normal people. Normal conversations.

And here I was.

Sitting inside a moment that didn’t feel normal at all.

I swallowed hard.

“My life…” I started, then stopped.

Because I didn’t know how to finish that sentence anymore.

Clara leaned in slightly. “We’re here,” she said again.

Same words as before.

But now they sounded a lot more real.

Because now there was something to be here for.

Daniel nodded. “Whatever comes next, we handle it step by step.”

Step by step.

But my life didn’t feel like steps anymore.

It felt like everything had just collapsed into one point.

Maya finally looked away for a second, then back at me.

“We deal with facts first,” she said. “Emotions later.”

I almost laughed at that.

Almost.

Because emotions were already here.

They were just… stuck.

I leaned back slightly in the chair.

My body felt tired now.

Not physically exhausted.

Just… mentally overloaded.

And still, I couldn’t cry.

Not yet.

Not even a single tear.

That scared me more than anything.

Because it meant I was still in shock.

Still holding everything in place by force.

And I didn’t know what would happen when that finally broke.

Clara rested her head lightly on my shoulder.

“I’ve got you,” she whispered.

And for the first time since I walked into this place…

I believed that part.

Just a little.

But even that belief didn’t erase the truth sitting in the room with us.

It just made it easier to breathe inside it.

We left the hospital without saying much.

Not because there was nothing to say.

But because everything felt too heavy to put into words.

Even walking felt strange, like my body had to be reminded how to move again. Clara stayed close to me the entire time, her arm linked with mine. Daniel walked slightly ahead, opening doors, making sure the path was clear without actually saying it.

Maya followed behind, quiet as always.

Outside, the air felt different.

Warmer a lot Normal.

And that normality almost made everything inside me feel more unreal.

Like what just happened in that room didn’t belong in the same world as this one.

I stood still for a moment near the car.

Just looking at it.

Didn’t move or speak.

Just existing in that in-between space where you’re not inside anymore, but not ready to leave it behind either.

Clara touched my arm gently. “Lina…”

I blinked slowly. “I’m fine.”

But even I didn’t believe it when I said it.

Daniel opened the back door for me.

I got in without resistance.

It felt easier to just follow movement than to decide anything myself.

Clara sat beside me again.

Maya got in after.

Daniel drove.

The ride home was quieter than before.

But it wasn’t the same kind of silence anymore.

Before, it was uncertainty.

Now, it was acceptance trying to settle in.

I stared out the window again, but I wasn’t really seeing anything.

Everything outside was moving too fast for my mind to catch up.

People walking.

Cars passing.

Everything happening and life just going on like nothing had changed.

But everything had changed.

Just not for them.

My hand moved again.

Without thinking just like an instinct.

Resting over my stomach.

And this time…

I didn’t stop it at all.

Clara noticed.

She didn’t comment.

But I felt her shift slightly closer anyway.

Like she understood without needing explanation.

Daniel glanced at the rearview mirror.

His eyes met mine for a second.

Then he looked away again.

Careful.

Always careful.

Maya spoke suddenly from the side.

“You’re going to need support beyond just today,” she said.

I turned my head slightly toward her.

“What does that mean?” I asked quietly.

She didn’t sugarcoat it.

“It means this isn’t a one-day shock. It changes things long-term.”

I let out a small breath.

Long-term.

That word hit differently now.

Because I hadn’t even processed today yet.

Clara tightened her hold on my hand again.

“I’m not going anywhere,” she said softly.

That was all she said.

But it was enough.

We reached home not long after.

The house looked the same.

Same walls and everything.

But I knew the moment I stepped in, it wouldn’t feel the same anymore.

I walked in slowly.

Like I was entering a space that already knew something had shifted.

Daniel closed the door behind us.

The sound felt too final.

For a moment, nobody moved.

We just stood there.

In the living room.

Together.

But not the same as before.

Not anymore.

Clara finally broke the silence.

“Do you want to rest?” she asked me gently.

I nodded slightly.

But even that felt like a lie.

Because I didn’t think I could rest properly anymore.

Not yet.

I walked toward my room slowly.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

Not because I was tired.

But because my mind was still trying to catch up with what my life had just become.

I sat on the bed once I got inside.

And for the first time since the hospital…

I was alone.

The silence hit differently here.

My hand went to my stomach again.

This time slower.

More aware.

Like I was trying to understand something my mind still refused to fully accept.

I whispered quietly to myself.

“So this is real…”

And for the first time…

My voice cracked.

Not loudly.

Just enough to show that the shock was finally starting to turn into something else.

I lay back slowly on the bed.

Staring at the ceiling again.

But this time…

I didn’t feel like the same person who had been doing this days ago.

Because now I knew.

Everything I thought was over…

Was only just beginning.
