Chapter 111: Taylor’s Breaking Point
Chapter 111: Taylor’s Breaking Point
The Fury mansion was silent, an uneasy tension hanging heavy in the air.
Taylor stormed into the living room where Veronica sat on the leather couch, sipping her tea.
She barely looked up to him, superior as ever. "Mother, we need to talk," he said, trying to keep a firm tone edging into frustrated.
Veronica only raised an eyebrow and set her cup down with delicacy. "What now, Taylor? I haven't got time to indulge in sulking."
Taylor clenched his fists at his sides.
"Sulking? You think this is sulking? You have any idea what you've done? You've ruined it all, the business, the reputation, and this family!"
Veronica's tranquil face suddenly darkened. "I have done nothing but protect this family. Everything I have done, Taylor, was in the name of the Fury legacy. If you'd been stronger, more like your father, none of this would have happened!"
Taylor's face twisted in fury. "You leave father out of this! It has nothing to do with Dad; it has everything to do with you and your sick obsession with trying to control everything!"
He took a deep breath and continued.
"You cost me my marriage, ran Nicole off, and now you have us all embroiled in this viper's nest of vendettas and counterplots. If only you had left me and my life alone, things might have turned out differently. Maybe we'd still have Taylons Enterprises. Maybe I wouldn't have lost everything!"
Veronica jumped to her feet, her face red with anger. "Nicole? This is about Nicole? That woman was a snake, Taylor! She was weak, a gold digger who would've dragged you down. I saved you from her!"
Taylor laughed cynically. "Saved me? You didn't save me; you destroyed me! You set her up, humiliated her, and made me believe she was unfaithful. I loved her, and you turned me against her. You took everything from me: my wife, my child, and now my company. Now, Mother, tell me, what have you saved?"
For a moment, there was complete silence in the room. Veronica looked away.
Sarah stood framed in the doorway and stepped further into the room, her face an inch with anger and hurt. "So that's how you really feel about me, Taylor?" she quavered.
Quickly, Taylor turned to face her. "Sarah, this has nothing to do with you."
"No," Sarah cut in, raising her voice. "It is about me! I gave you everything; my love, my support, and my loyalty and you stand here comparing me with Nicole? You think marrying me was some kind of mistake, don't you? It's my fault for not being her!"
"That's not what I meant." Taylor tried to defend himself, but Sarah wasn't listening.
"Don't lie to me, Taylor!" she snapped, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
"You have been holding onto Nicole's shadow all these years. You have never let her go, and now you are standing here, blaming your mother, blaming me, blaming everyone but yourself for your failures. Where's the responsibility for the choices you made?"
Taylor opened his mouth to say something, but nothing came out of his lips.
He looked between his mother and his wife, the weight of their accusations pressing down on him like a crushing tide.
Sarah shook her head, her voice breaking. "I've stood by you through everything, Taylor. But if you can't see that, if you can't appreciate me for who I am, then maybe you're the real problem here."
She turned on her heel and walked out, leaving Taylor and Veronica in a silence that was louder than any argument.
Veronica's smug expression had returned, but even she couldn't hide the faint flicker of doubt in her eyes.
Meanwhile, across town, Nicole sat at her desk, the dim light of her study casting shadows on the walls.
A stack of files sat before her, each filled with incriminating evidence against Veronica Fury.
She ran her fingers over the edges of the papers, as thoughts raced round her mind.
The shooter's confession was replaying in her brain, the venomous utter of Veronica's name from his mouth.
Nicole's jaw was clenched; her anger bubbled just below the surface. Then, as she stared at the evidence, another emotion seeped in.
Doubt.
She leaned back into her chair and closed her eyes.
Images of the last three years flooded her mind, the betrayal and humiliation, the loss of her child.
All that the Fury family had put her through lay in open view in front of her.
Yet as much as she desired justice, somewhere inwards, deep inside, she was conflicted if this struggle would lead to her peace.
Nicole drummed a rhythmic beat onto the desk, a habit that kept slipping through her ability to control it.
She'd sunk so much time and effort into this struggle; to what purpose?
Was she becoming exactly that which she abhorred: a creature consumed by vengeance?
Leo burst into the room, his entrance thick with tension.
Nicole looked up from her desk, surprised but not altogether unwelcoming.
"Leo," she said, standing. "What are you doing here?"
He took another step closer to her, frustration and concern chiseled onto his face. "I came because I'm worried about you, Nicole."
Nicole frowned. "Worried about me? Why?"
Leo gestured to the files spread across her desk. “This. All of this. The case, the evidence, the late nights—you’re consumed by it. You’ve let it take over your life.”
Nicole’s eyes hardened. “I’m fighting for justice, Leo. I’m doing what needs to be done.”
“At what cost?” he countered, his voice rising slightly. “You’re so focused on bringing Veronica down that you’re forgetting everything else. What about your happiness? What about us?”
Nicole froze, his words hitting her like a slap. “This isn’t about us, Leo. This is about righting the wrongs that were done to me.”
Enraged, Leo took another step closer towards her. "But where do the Cycles of Hurts end, Nicole? When would enough finally be enough? The Fury family has so far lost everything; now what else do you want?"
"I just want them to pay for it!" Nicole exploded in a trembling voice. "I want them to feel all those years' pain that I had since they ruined my life."
The stiffness in Leo's expression softened, but his eyes had chiseled on the sorrow. "And after that? When you've overcome them, will you be happy? Or will you be still seeking something to fight for, to cling to, against the knowledge no such thing will soothe your soul?"
Nicole had to avert her head to the grip that clutched at her throat.
She had no answer, and she hated to admit he was right.
Leo sighed. He ran his hand through his hair. "Nicole, I love you. I always have. I'm really sorry, but I couldn't stand by and watch you break yourself up this way. You have to let go."
She turned back to him, the fierce brightness in her eyes, and said: "I don't want to let go, Leo. Not just yet."
Her voice came out flat, final, allowing no room for arguments. Leo's shoulders slumped, and he stepped backward, his face a picture of disappointment.
Without another word, he turned and walked out of the room, leaving Nicole alone with her thoughts and her vengeance.
Nicole sat back down, staring at the files in front of her.
Her heart was heavy, but her resolve remained. The fight wasn’t over—not yet.
