Chapter 108: The Press Conference
Chapter 108: The Press Conference
The grand hall of the Okeke Group headquarters was buzzing with excitement.
The newly finished building stood tall and mighty in the heart of New York City.
The room was filled with rows of journalists, photographers, and prominent business personalities, all talking in a humming sound of expectation.
Nicole stood behind the podium, a vision of poise and elegance in her tailored black suit.
The large Okeke Group logo stood proudly behind her, a symbol of her incredible journey from ruin to redemption.
Many staff and shareholders had come to see for themselves all the way from Brooklyn.
As she adjusted the microphone, the room gradually hushed. Eyes hovered on her, cameras in focus. Waiting for her to speak,
"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," Nicole began, her voice steady yet warm.
"Thank you for joining me today as we discuss the future of the Okeke Group, along with the role that we intend to play in transforming industries and communities."
She paused and her gaze swept the room.
"The Okeke Group was founded on a foundation of resilience, innovation, and service to people. These founding principles would lead us to begin an audacious expansion drive not just in New York but literally globally."
She explained everything that would happen within the organization concerning the investments in sustainable technologies, local businesses partnerships, and programs that would support underprivileged communities.
With her words, she painted a vision of growth and impact that earned her nods of approval from many in the audience.
"This is more than business," Nicole went on with fervor, "This is building a legacy for many generations to take inspiration from; innovation with purpose, success with upliftment around each participant."
A bunch of clappings erupted in the air, just as Nicole concluded her official remarks.
Streams of questions were followed afterwards:
“Ms. Okeke,” a journalist in the front row stood, pen in hand. “Your vision is commendable, but given the current court case involving Veronica Fury, many are wondering if this has become personal. Is this a fight for justice or revenge?”
Nicole never lost her bright smile, but behind her eyes was steel. "I understand the curiosity surrounding the case," she began. "Let me assure you, my focus has always been on building something meaningful."
The legal proceedings are about accountability, not vengeance. And as much as I respect the public's interest, I won't be commenting further on an ongoing case."
Another journalist raised his hand. "What motivated you to take this fight on, knowing the complexities and possible repercussions?"
Nicole took a deep breath and composed herself. "I have had hard times in my life, times that made me stronger and firm in life," she started, her voice cracking. "Those hard times made me the person I am today. My motivation is simply to ensure there are consequences for one's actions. This is not just about me; it's setting an example."
There was a murmur exchanged among the journalists; all were amazed at how composed she sounded.
A third question went: "Ms. Okeke, to what extent would you go with this case? Are you prepared in case of a loss or possible repercussions that may follow?"
Nicole leaned slightly forward, her eyes locking with the journalist. "I am prepared for whatever comes. What matters most to me is that the truth comes to light. Beyond that, I leave everything in the hands of justice."
Her answers, firm yet graceful, left the room abuzz with admiration.
With even more applause, the press conference was finally over, and Nicole stepped off the podium into a private room.
In the Fury's apartment, Veronica sat on the plush leather couch, her fingers wrapped tightly around the remote control.
The television broadcast Nicole's press conference, her calm composure only adding fuel to Veronica's rage.
"Who does she think she is?" Veronica spat, slapping the remote onto the coffee table as her voice recoiled through the room. "Standing there, acting like she's some savior of the world!"
Taylor entered, an aspect of weariness upon his face. "What now?" he asked, although he knew.
“Look at her,” Veronica hissed, pointing at the screen. “She’s not just coming for me—she’s coming for our entire legacy. And you’re just sitting there, doing nothing!”
Taylor remained silent, his eyes fixed on the screen.
Nicole’s words replayed in his mind, and for the first time, he wondered if they had gone too far.
The weight of their actions, the lies, and the scheming finally became so crushing.
"Taylor!" Veronica barked, snapping him out of his reverie. "Did you hear me? We need to stop her before it's too late."
Taylor let out a deep sigh. "Maybe it already is," he muttered to himself, yet loudly enough for Veronica to hear it.
"What did you just say?" she returned, her voice sharp.
"Nothing," Taylor returned spinning on his heel and leaving the room.
Veronica watched him go, her chest tightening with frustration. She felt the cracks in their united front, and it unnerved her.
That evening, Nicole stood on the balcony of her apartment, looking out over the city that had seen her rise and fall.
The sky was blinded with lights, and that was far from the storm in her heart.
She leaned against the railing, her thoughts churning inside her head.
Memories she had tried to bury finally resurfaced: the betrayal, the humiliation, everything seemed to weigh down on her.
She thought about those nights when she cried to sleep, those immense times of self-doubt, and the ones who told her she couldn't make it.
But she had. She was here, stronger than ever, yet the scars remained.
“Can I ever truly let it go?” she whispered to herself.
The city didn’t answer, its hum of life carrying on as if to remind her that the world moved forward, no matter how heavy her burdens felt.
Nicole sighed, her resolve hardening. “Not yet,” she murmured. “Not until this chapter is closed.”
