Chapter 106: The Awakening

Chapter 106: The Awakening
Nicole sat alone in her dimly lit study, the glow of her laptop casting an eerie light on her face.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she hit play on the video for the fifth time that night.

She had felt like rewatching the video that morning. She just couldn't stop thinking about it. How far was Veronica ready to go to eliminate her?

It was hoarse and cold, echoing off the walls of the room as the shooter described how the hit had been orchestrated by Veronica.

Every word, a knife lancing into Nicole.

The clenching of her jaw mirrored a bubbling rage boiling over, concealing the anguish beneath -- a cut so deep and so profound, impossible for retribution to ever restore.

She stopped the playback, leaned back in her chair, and massaged her temples.

In an instant, the memory of the child she lost swam before her eyes, and then, hot tears filled her eyes, about to drop but she quickly wipped them off.

"No more weakness," she said firmly, her voice hoarse. "She will pay dearly for what she did to me. I'll make sure of it"

In the sitting room, Carter and Collins sat on the plush couch with their voices hushed but urgent.

"I'm starting to get worried about her," Carter revealed, his voice dribbling concern. "This thing with the Fury family, it's devouring her. This is not the Nicole we knew years ago."

Collins nodded, arms crossed. "She has been to hell. Anybody would change after what they did to her. But I see what you're getting at. She's walking one hell of a fine line between justice and self-destruction."

Carter exhaled heavily, staring at the floor. “I doubt if she’s sleeping properly, barely eating. And now this video… It’s like she’s using it as fuel to keep going. But what happens when there’s nothing left to fight for?”

At this point, they didn't care if they were crossing boundaries. All that mattered was protecting their boss, even from herself.

Collins placed a reassuring hand on Carter’s shoulder. “That’s why we’re here. To protect her. Even if it’s from herself. She needs us more than ever right now.”

They were cut off as Nicole entered, her face unreadable. "Carter, Collins," she said softly. "Thank you for everything. I don't say it enough, but I mean it. You've stood by me through all of this, and I won't forget it."

Carter and Collins exchanged a glance, both of them at a loss for words. "We're here for you, ma'am," Collins said. "Always."

The air inside the Fury mansion was brittle with tension.

Taylor sat in the study, staring at the stack of unpaid bills and notices of foreclosure that littered his desk.

The once mighty Taylons Enterprises was no more, and even their family home was starting to feel like a ticking time bomb.

Veronica entered, commanding as always, but Taylor didn't lift his head.

"What is it, Taylor?" Veronica impatiently asked.

Finally, he raised his eyes to hers, a look of expression spent from anger. "Tell me the truth, Mother," he pressed. "Did you order the hit on Nicole?"

She hardened instantly. "What kind of question is this? Of course, not!"

"Don't lie to me!" Taylor's voice rose, frustration evident. "I know what you told the lawyer after you were bailed out. You admitted to everything, all those despicable things you've done to her."

Veronica's composure slipped for a second before she straightened up.

"Everything I've done, Taylor, has been for this family. For you, for Sarah, for our legacy. Nicole was a threat. She always has been."

Taylor suddenly rose to his feet, scraping the chair on the floor. "A threat? She was my wife! She was carrying my child!" His voice broke, and for the first time in years, his eyes welled up with tears. "And you destroyed her. You destroyed us."

He walked towards the entrance door as if he wanted to leave, but then returned, his feet kicking against the mable floor. "Oh, God, what have I done?"

She took a step closer to him, her voice softening. "I did what I had to do. She would have ruined you, Taylor. You couldn't see it, but I could. Everything I did was to protect you."

“Protect me?” Taylor laughed bitterly, shaking his head. “You call this protection? Look around, Mother. We’ve lost everything. The company, the house, our reputation—it’s all gone, goddamn it! And for what? Your vendetta against a woman who only ever wanted to be part of this family?”

Veronica’s eyes narrowed. “She manipulated you, Taylor. Don’t forget that. She was no innocent victim.”

Oh God, Jezebels will never change.

Taylor clenched his fists, his voice dropping to a low growl. “No, Mother. The only manipulator here is you. And now we’re paying the price for your actions.”

Veronica opened her mouth to respond, but the words wouldn’t come.

For a moment, she saw the depth of her son’s anger and disappointment, and it stung in a way she hadn’t anticipated.

He turned away, his shoulders hunched. "I don't even know who you are anymore," he muttered.

Veronica watched him storm out of the room, the beating of her heart extremely fast.

She'd always been strong in her decisions, but now, doubt crept in. Had she gone too far?

Back at Nicole's mansion, she sat on her balcony sipping a glass of wine while staring out across the city's skyline. The video file sat on the table beside her, a reminder of the power now held over Veronica.

But even with the victory in hand, she still felt empty.

She could still hear Leo's voice in her head: "At what point are you going to let go, Nicole? When does it end?"

She shut her eyes, blowing out a deep breath. She had no idea of the answer anymore. All she knew was that she just wasn't done yet.

Below, Collins watched her from the driveway, his face contemplative. He turned to Carter, who stood beside him. "She's holding on by a thread," he said quietly.

Carter nodded, his jaw clenched. "Well, we must make sure that thread doesn't break."

The two men stood in silence, their loyalty to Nicole unwavering, even as they feared the path she was walking down.

The Fury family, broken and splintered, was unraveling.

And Nicole, though victorious in many ways, was still battling her own demons.

The question now was: how far was she willing to go before finding peace or losing herself completely?
