Chapter 299 The beginning again
Chapter 299 The beginning again
Isabel’s POV
It’s night at the beach event center. We sit on wooden chairs under paper lanterns, the sea’s foam glowing in the moonlight. In front of us, a line of fire dancers weave vertical flames, their silhouettes flickering against the crowd. The air hums with music, laughter, and the scent of roasted nuts and salty air.
They begin a slow, sweet pas de deux. Two dancers glide across the sand, their bodies close but not touching, moving in perfect harmony. The male dancer lifts his partner’s chin with his hand, guiding her through soft spins. Each step mirrors the gentle steps of first love, the small hesitations that become trust. My heart tightens.
I feel a rush of memory from that day on this very beach years ago—when Alexander and I danced together under similar lantern glow, no audience, no pressure, just us.
I turn sharply and catch Alexander staring at me, his eyes soft and full of shared memory. I smile at him, a quiet recognition, then return my gaze to the dancers.
He leans close, voice low: “You remember? This used to be your favorite part of the beach event whenever we came.”
I nod, a small smile playing at my lips. “Yeah,” I whisper without looking at him.
Suddenly I say, almost breathlessly, “And you used to… scoop me up when the music started, spin me until my head was dizzy,” I laugh softly. His startled grin tells me he’s remembering too. For a moment, our laughter lights up the space between us before the familiar silence returns.
I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear and glance at him. “I remember, Alexander. How could I forget?” I tease, and his eyes widen—blush creeping into his cheeks. I inwardly scoff at myself for how easily I affect him.
Out of nowhere, Scarlett and Sterling stride toward us, little hands outstretched. “Join us, Mom, Dad!” Sterling’s grin is infectious.
I try to shake my head and back off. “No, darlings, come back—” I say gently.
But they aren’t deterred. They squeal and beg louder. Aria, Aurora, and the others join in too, clapping and cheering. The group suddenly turns into a chorus urging us to dance.
I’m overpowered by their enthusiasm. I can’t refuse. I smile and give in.
Alexander reaches out, a knowing smile dancing on his lips. I scoff softly, but take his hand anyway, and we step onto the dance area near the lantern-lit circle.
He places my hand on his shoulder and slowly slides his other arm around my waist. The moment his palm settles at the small of my back, a surge of warmth runs through me. His eyes meet mine and without words we say everything—we see again the spark of young love mirrored there.
Soft music plays as we move together, step by gentle step. My mind drifts back to those early days—when time felt infinite and love felt brand new.
Outside, the dancers move in perfect rhythm. And now, so do we—our own pas de deux, unfolding under a thousand paper lights.
My stomach fills with butterflies just like it did before.
Then he spins me smoothly, pulling me back so my back presses into his chest. His breath warms my neck. We hold that position—close, suspended in time—before spinning out again. Our eyes lock, and around us the audience erupts in appreciative claps.
Sterling bounds forward with a huge thumbs up. “Mom, Dad, you two are the best!” Scarlett beams and bounces in place.
Alexander crouches to them. “Really? Then let me show you how good Dad can really be.”
He pulls them both into a warm embrace, lifting them off the ground as laughter and squeals spiral around us. They hug him tightly, their joy bubbling over as Alexander makes his way back to where we were seated.
He turns slightly, casting a small glance over his shoulder — a silent invitation.
I smile and nod, rising to follow him. We settle back into our chairs, the kids nestled between us, still chattering excitedly about the show unfolding in front of us.
Through the flickering light I catch Aurora signaling the kids—just a little movement between them. Scarlett suddenly perks up. “Let’s go, brother. Let’s go finish our game with Aunt Aurora!”
Before I can speak, the kids dart off, and I sit there with my jaw dropping—the scene too adorable, too perfectly chaotic.
Alexander scoots closer, filling the space between us. “I’m sure they just want some time with Aurora,” he says quietly.
I smile and nod to ease the moment. He presses his hand into mine. I let him—not pulling away this time. We slide into each other’s warmth as another show program begins and applause rises from the crowd.
His voice breaks the comfortable quiet. “Thank you, Isabel.”
I turn to him awkwardly, searching his eyes. “For what?” I reply softly, calm with a gentle smile.
“For everything,” he says, voice sincere. “For letting me share this with you and the kids.”
“Come on, Alexander,” I tease with a laugh, “you’ve been thanking me for weeks now.”
He looks bewildered—and amused. “I have?” he asks, scratching the back of his head in that funny way I’ve missed so much. I laugh at how he still does that, exactly the same as he always did.
He smiles at me, then gazes over the crowd. “But it’s never enough, Isabel. I’ll keep being grateful for letting me in. And for letting me relive this—just like our first date here.”
His eyes find mine. A tingle hits my stomach. The same spark from years ago. It’s as if we’re speaking without words—relearning each other in this moment.
Maybe this isn’t just a moment… maybe this is the beginning of a love we get to choose all over again.
He inches closer, palm brushing my cheek. Our eyes hold. Without warning, he leans in and our lips meet.
His kiss is gentle, firm—a promise of everything we’ve been missing. I close my eyes and lean into him fully, letting go of all doubt, all fear, all hesitations.
Nothing feels forced—just me, him, and the love we’re claiming again.
