Chapter 39 The Day We Made It

Chapter 39 The Day We Made It
POV: Valeria Cruz

The auditorium is louder than I expected.

Not overwhelming.

Just… full.

Voices layered over each other.

Families calling out names.

Programs flipping.

Chairs scraping.

The kind of noise that only exists when something actually matters.

I stand just off to the side of the stage.

Cap in place.

Gown sitting heavier on my shoulders than it should.

My speech folded neatly in my hands.

Even though I don’t need it.

I know every word.

I just need something to hold.

My fingers keep smoothing the paper.

Over and over again.

Like if I keep it steady—

I’ll stay steady too.

“You’re going to wear that paper out before you even get up there.”

I turn.

Elena.

Of course it’s her.

Already in her gown.

Already looking like she’s more excited than I am.

“I might,” I admit.

She studies me for a second.

“You’re nervous.”

“That obvious?”

“Only to people who know you.”

That—

that makes something in my chest tighten.

Because people do know me now.

Not the version I had to be.

The real one.

Maya and Sofia walk up behind her.

“You’re going to be amazing,” Sofia says immediately.

“I already cried once,” Maya adds.

“You cry at everything,” Elena says.

“I had a reason this time.”

I laugh softly.

And it helps.

Just enough.

“Hey.”

I turn again.

Rafe.

He shouldn’t be back here.

But of course he is.

“How do you know?” I ask.

He shrugs slightly.

“Because you always are.”

That hits.

Harder than it should.

Because he’s seen everything.

The worst parts.

The moments I didn’t think I’d make it through.

And he still says that like it’s a fact.

Not something I have to prove.

My name gets called before I can answer.

Everything moves fast after that.

Too fast.

I step forward.

Walk across the stage.

Lights brighter than I expected.

The crowd louder than I thought.

But I don’t look at them first.

I look for them.

The twins.

Front row.

Already standing.

Clapping like I just did something impossible.

Like I’m something impossible.

That—

that almost breaks me.

But I don’t stop.

I take the diploma.

Shake hands.

Turn.

And then—

“Elena, sit down!” someone yells.

“No!” she yells back.

I almost laugh.

Because of course she’s standing.

Nico next to her, yelling something I can’t even make out.

Maya and Sofia right behind them.

Dylan.

Matteo.

All of them.

Here.

For me.

For this.

And suddenly—

this doesn’t feel like something I did alone.

Not even close.

I make it to the podium.

Valedictorian.

That word still doesn’t feel real.

I look out at the crowd.

At the people who made it.

At the people who almost didn’t.

At the people who never thought they would.

And for a second—

I forget everything I planned to say.

Because none of it feels big enough.

None of it feels honest enough.

So I don’t read it.

I just…

speak.

“I used to think making it meant everything would finally be easy.”

The room quiets.

Completely.

“But I know now… that’s not what this is.”

I glance at the twins.

Then at Rafe.

Then back at everyone.

“This isn’t the end of something hard.”

“It’s the beginning of something we choose.”

My voice steadies.

Stronger than I expected.

“Every single one of us sitting here today has something we had to fight through.”

“Some of it people saw.”

“Some of it… they didn’t.”

A few heads nod in the crowd.

Teachers.

Parents.

Students who know exactly what that means.

“That doesn’t make us broken.”

“It makes us here.”

I take a breath.

Let it out slowly.

“We don’t all leave here the same way.”

“We don’t all go to the same places.”

“But we take each other with us.”

I pause.

Let it land.

Because it matters.

More than anything else I could say.

“Because making it isn’t about where you end up.”

“It’s about who you refuse to lose along the way.”

I step back.

Before I overthink it.

Before I feel too much.

And then—

the applause hits.

Loud.

Real.

But I don’t focus on that.

I focus on them.

The twins crying.

Elena yelling again.

Nico clapping like he’s about to break something.

Maya and Sofia holding onto each other.

And Rafe—

just standing there.

Looking at me like—

like I didn’t just survive.

Like I won.

After the ceremony, everything blurs.

Pictures.

Hugs.

Voices overlapping.

“You did that,” Maya says, pulling me into a hug.

“I cried again,” Sofia admits.

“Of course you did,” Elena says.

Nico steps in.

“That speech? Yeah. That was insane.”

“In a good way,” Dylan adds.

Matteo nods.

“Definitely in a good way.”

The twins crash into me next.

Hard.

No warning.

No holding back.

“We’re so proud of you,” Mateo says into my shoulder.

I freeze for a second.

Because no one’s ever said that to me like that before.

Not like they mean it.

Not like it’s always been true.

“I love you guys,” I whisper.

They squeeze tighter.

Like they’re not letting go.

Like they never will.

And for once—

I believe that too.

Rafe steps up behind me.

Not interrupting.

Not pulling attention.

Just there.

His hand finds mine.

Easy.

Natural.

“You ready?” he asks quietly.

I look at him.

Then at all of them.

Then at everything waiting for us.

And I smile.

“Yeah,” I say.

This time—

I mean it.
