Chapter 613 A Sense of Security
Chapter 613 A Sense of Security
Stanley's words hit Elmwood like a ton of bricks, reminding him of the tough road ahead.
Elmwood knew Stanley was right. Following his advice would save a lot of hassle, and Melinda wouldn't even need to know about any of this.
"Alright, I'll think it over. In the meantime, help me figure out what they're up to!"
Stanley sighed, "Okay, just think about what I said. I'll let you know once I find out more."
Elmwood hung up the phone, feeling a heavy weight on his chest.
He gently opened the hospital room door. Evander was asleep in the corner of the bed, leaving the blanket for Elmwood.
This kid, not even three years old, was so thoughtful.
Other kids his age were still clinging to their parents, but he was already thinking about survival.
Elmwood walked in and saw Evander curled up, a sign of insecurity. How could he bear to send him away?
If Melinda woke up tomorrow and found out what he had done, she would definitely be furious.
Elmwood lay down beside him. Evander seemed to sense someone there and turned to hug him.
His small hands could only rest on Elmwood's chest. His breathing was so faint that you had to listen closely to hear it.
Such a sweet child. How could his parents abandon him?
Although Harrington wasn't his biological child, Elmwood had long treated him as his own, cherishing him dearly. Seeing Evander suffer made his heart ache.
The next morning, sunlight streamed into the hospital room, and the sleeping person slowly opened her eyes.
Melinda's vision was still blurry. She took a heavy breath and closed her eyes again.
She felt like someone had been standing next to her. Rubbing her eyes, she opened them again and saw Elmwood. Excited, she reached out, and Elmwood quickly held her hand.
"Sweetheart, thank God you're finally awake."
"Am I in the hospital? I waited for you."
Elmwood hugged her tenderly, "I'm so sorry you had to go through that. When I got your call, you fainted after saying just one sentence. I was so worried. Luckily, a kind person told me where you were, and I found you."
Melinda tried to recall the events, and the memories still made her uneasy.
It was such a dangerous situation. If Hugo had come back after she fainted, he would have taken her away.
"It was so close. I almost got caught by him. Thankfully, those bystanders helped me, or I would have been taken."
Elmwood felt guilty, "It's all my fault for arriving late and putting you in danger. I've already asked Leander to find those kind people and reward them generously. Good deeds should be repaid."
Melinda took a deep breath, "I was taking a gamble, and God was on my side. By the way, did you catch Hugo?"
Elmwood was grateful. Without those kind people, Melinda would have been taken by Hugo, and rescuing her would have been difficult.
"Unfortunately, we haven't found Hugo yet. He escaped before we arrived. Stanley is leading a city-wide search. He's now a wanted man and won't get away."
"We must catch him. He's our biggest threat."
"I know. I will personally make sure he pays for what he did."
Melinda sighed and glanced at Evander sleeping on the bed, thinking she was seeing things.
"Is that Evander? Why is he sleeping here?"
Elmwood frowned, and Melinda continued, "Did he come here yesterday? Did Yvonne and the others trust you with Evander?"
Elmwood held her hand, "Sweetheart, right now, your health is the most important. The doctor said your pregnancy has been severely affected. You need to rest in bed for the next couple of days, and your emotions are crucial. You can't get agitated."
"Don't worry, I know my body. But you're changing the subject. I'm asking why Evander is here." Melinda could tell he didn't want to talk about it.
Elmwood supported her shoulders, letting her lean against him, feeling her warmth and breath. Only then did he feel alive.
"Sweetheart, promise me you won't get angry no matter what you hear."
"Just tell me already. You're making me more anxious."
"Okay, I'll tell you now. Last night, Evander came to find me. He wanted to sleep with me, so I brought him here. I tried to contact his parents, but both their phones were off. I've already asked Stanley to find them."
Melinda sighed deeply, "Is this Evander's fate? No matter how much we do for him, we can't change his destiny."
He was abused by Ottilie, and Melinda and her husband rescued him.
Then he was sent abroad, and Melinda and her husband traveled across countries to bring him back to his family.
Yvonne even went through life and death, and they saved her too.
After all that, they thought the family would cherish each other more. Why did it suddenly turn out like this? It made Melinda feel disheartened.
If she had known it would come to this, she wouldn't have intervened in the first place.
Elmwood saw her heavy expression and gently patted her chest to soothe her.
"Don't be angry. It's not worth it for people like them."
"Has Stanley responded yet? I want to see if they had an accident or really abandoned the child."
Elmwood shook his head, "He hasn't responded yet. He might still be resting. He forced himself to leave the hospital against the doctor's orders to find you. When I saw him last night, he didn't look well."
In the past, Elmwood wouldn't have told Melinda these things, fearing that Stanley's importance in her heart would increase.
Even though Stanley didn't compete for anything, having someone so devoted to his wife made Elmwood wary.
So he rarely mentioned such things before. Now he knew their relationship was over, and they wouldn't be together again.
"He's always stubborn. No one can stop him from doing what he wants. He's strong and will be fine."
"He does have a lot of energy."
Melinda sighed, "I didn't expect to leave and still encounter such things. It seems even God doesn't want me to go."
It felt like a predestined arrangement. She had always hesitated about returning, and when she finally decided to leave, these events held her back.
"Don't overthink it. Once you recover, we'll go back."
Melinda looked at Evander, "What about him?"
"Respect his fate. We can help for a while, but not forever."
Melinda gave a bitter smile and closed her eyes, "I'm tired again. I want to sleep a bit more."
"I'll help you lie down." Elmwood supported her shoulders, trying to help her lie down, but Melinda shook her head and hugged his neck.
"No, I want to lean on you like this. It makes me feel safe."
This incident had deeply affected Melinda. Closing her eyes, she kept seeing herself locked up by Hugo.
She didn't know why this person cast such a dark shadow over her. Just thinking about him made her scalp tingle.
Elmwood felt heartbroken seeing her like this and gently patted her, "Sleep, I'll hold you."
