Chapter 83 Old History
Chapter 83 Old History
Skylar
We completely forgot about the school rules. To make matters worse, I still had an exam to take as a werewolf student, and an actual Alpha in this academy was right there breaking the rules alongside me, all because of our bond.
After Michael shifted back into his human form, his mouth just opened and closed silently, his voice totally drowned out by Fischer’s.
"Get back to your respective dorms and meet me at 7 o'clock sharp," Fischer said flatly.
I swallowed hard. Next to me, Michael—who was back in his thin tee and shorts—just let out a soft huff.
Meanwhile, I was wearing an oversized t-shirt Fischer had tossed at me before leaving us.
“Do you think this is going to be a massive issue?” I asked Michael.
“Even if it is, I’ll take the hit so you’re out of harm’s way. Not to sound paranoid, but I just don't trust witches.”
I got what he meant. His wolf instincts always spiked around magic, especially spells tied to Fischer.
Michael and I split up at the stairs, promising to meet up before heading into Fischer’s office.
“I won't be long,” Michael said simply before disappearing round the corner.
“Had breakfast?” I asked Michael, making conversation as we reached Fischer’s door.
“Just a sandwich Keylan passed me earlier. You?”
I gave a small nod, even though I hadn't eaten a thing because I was stressing over this meeting.
Michael reached out and grabbed the door handle before I could touch it.
He could definitely feel my nerves through our bond.
“Morning, Skylar,” Uncle Kai greeted with a somewhat forced smile.
“Uncle Kai.”
“I suppose you were hoping for a good-looking lad like Irlan to stand up for you.”
I let out a soft huff. “Right, Uncle Malachai, please speak up for me—I’ve got my werewolf practical exam in 10 minutes.”
“You should have thought of that before breaking through the academy fence, Ms. McKirby,” Fischer interjected dryly.
There was a slight glint of amusement, mixed with subtle disappointment, on his sharp face.
"You two certainly know how to make the most of the night," Kai teased gently. "Leaping out of tower windows, sneaking past academy borders, and coming back at dawn in full beast form. Quite the role models for an Alpha and a daughter of the Red Crescent Moon..."
"Level-three infraction. Leaving the premises without permission at night, disregarding security protocols.” Fischer read off the hovering parchment before him. “Under Board regulations, I have full grounds to suspend you both for two weeks or summon your parents for a formal hearing."
At the word 'parents', my blood ran cold. Dad couldn't be brought into this.
If Dad found out I broke the rules, he wouldn't just lose it, he'd lock down my freedom completely.
Even worse, he’d go straight for Michael, just when I was planning to introduce him to the Red Crescent Moon as my mate.
"Don't call my father," I blurted out, stepping forward. My voice trembled a bit, but I forced myself to meet his eyes with total surrender. "Please, Principal Fischer. This is entirely on me. I’m the one who jumped out the window first. Michael only chased after me to make sure I didn't lose control."
Michael hissed softly beside me, his warm, strong hand gripping my wrist protectively. "Don't sell yourself short, Juliette. We both did it. If anyone’s taking the fall, make it me as the Alpha."
"Enough," Kai cut in.
Stepping forward silently, he moved between us and Fischer’s desk, his calm, intimidating presence acting as a neutral shield.
"Principal Fischer, you know full well Alpha Seth’s position on the Council is delicate right now. Hauling him in over teenage mischief fuelled by mate bond hormones will just cause unnecessary diplomatic chaos."
Fischer laced his fingers together over the desk. "A violation is still a violation, Malachai. The Moontrack dorms and academy security were both compromised by their impulse decisions."
"Then give them detention," Kai suggested casually, though he threw me a meaningful look. "An internal detention that actually helps the academy, rather than locking them away in their rooms."
Fischer narrowed his eyes, mulling over Kai’s suggestion for a few agonising seconds. Finally, the old man let out a heavy sigh.
"Fine. Based on Professor Henderson’s advice, I’ll hold off on the summons for Alpha Seth. However, you are both serving detention starting tonight."
I let out a massive sigh of relief, though Michael’s grip on my hand didn't loosen one bit.
"Your detention," Fischer continued, his tone turning grave, "isn't just clearing out the library or sweeping the training yard. You’re assigned to assist our new caretaker, a veteran hunter named Mr. Barnaby."
Michael and I traded confused looks. "Mr. Barnaby?" I muttered.
"A new caretaker brought in to oversee the academy’s old foundations," Fischer replied. "Over the past few days, there have been anomalies in the Arcanum basement sector. Something managed to break through the ancient protection sigils. Most concerning of all... the intruder left a very distinct mark on the stone walls: deep bite marks from a giant bat, steeped in dark magic."
The room went dead silent. The words 'dark magic' and 'bat' set off instant warning bells in my head.
My left wrist stung beneath my sleeve as Katarina’s seal reacted to his words.
"You both possess sharp tracking instincts," Fischer stated firmly. "Your detention task is to report to Mr. Barnaby at ten tonight at the entrance of the Underground Rubik and track down the intruder. Try running off again, and that letter goes straight to Alpha Seth."
“Remember, Skylar,” Uncle Kai whispered in my ear as we headed out, “that basement holds old history best left buried. Keep your temper in check and don't let Katarina’s shadow get the better of you down there.”
Once we stepped back into the corridor, Michael pulled me tight against his chest.
His golden eyes searched mine, heavy with guilt, desire, and razor-sharp awareness. The back of his hand gently brushed against the bite mark on my neck, hidden beneath my collar.
"Sorry about back there in the office," he murmured low, his voice reverberating through my chest. "Though I’ve got to admit, I don't mind getting punished if it’s with you. At least I can be right there to keep your temper in check."
“Look at you, not sounding like an arrogant Alpha wolf for once. Can't decide if that’s a win or if it’s still going to drive me mad.” I was just being honest.
“Catch you tonight, Mate. Hopefully tonight gets a bit more interesting than yesterday.”
