I looked at Brianna nervously when Kade suddenly rise to his feet and walks over to us. But before he could reach us, an arm so heavy and cologne so strong weighs on my shoulder and senses.
I didn’t like the scent of his cologne.
Brian tugs me away from his sister.” My turn to hog her Brianna,” Brian joked. I found my eyes steering to where Kade was, only to now stare into his eyes more closely. The blue penetrating me.
He glares down at me, then the arm slung over my shoulder. ” I told you to not wear that dress Mia,”
“Ooh protective brother mode,” Brian laughs, squeezing me closer to him.
My brows furrowed at Brian’s words, but Kade only seemed to grow more irritated. Ignoring Brian, Kade grumbles, looking over at Brianna.” Do you have any sweatpants that will fit her-
Anger and humiliation grew within me. He was making this a huge issue. It was just a dress for God’s sake! Yes I wanted his reaction but not like this.” No!” I snapped, wrapping my arms around my midriff.
“You don’t get to act all protective over me when you basically have ignored me the moment you got here. I’m a big girl Kade, I can choose what I want to wear,” I hissed.
I saw the flicker of anger in his eyes my words brought on. I don’t back down. Instead, I lift my chin to show that I grew some imaginary balls. It may not be big but it’ll do.
“Mia-
Suddenly he stops. His eyes glower down at me before he exhales out an annoyed breath. “You know what? Fine. Wear whatever you fucking want.” Raising his hands in annoyance, he turns around and storms back to where he was seated before.
There’s a guy who was now seated there and he scurried away when his eyes landed on a furious Kade.
“Woah someone’s in a mood,” Brian voices as all eyes are glued to a fuming Kade. He looked like a kettle, seething as he sat down on the log, refusing to look my way again.
My stomach drops.
Maybe I shouldn’t have told him those words. Or maybe I shouldn’t have tried to get his attention in the first place.
“I hate when siblings fight,” Brianna sighs, faking a pout as she turns to me. “You two remind me of Brian and I. Isn’t that right Brian?” Her eyes sweep over to her brother.
Brian chuckles, squeezing me. I stiffen, uncomfortable by his sudden need for closeness. “Yeah don’t worry about it Mia. Brother’s are always protective. He’ll get over it.”
Something about his words rubbed me the wrong way. I didn’t want to think Kade’s sudden attention was just brotherly.
“Yeah I guess,” I mumble pulling out of his hold. I’m aware of his brows furrowing in confusion by my actions. Brian was not used to a girl rejecting him.
My eyes shift behind him, relieved when I spotted Colby walking towards us slowly. Was he purposely taking his time to get here?

I pleaded with him using my eyes to hurry up and rescue me. I used to want Brian’s attention before, but not now. Now he failed in comparison to Kade. Everyone did.
Colby looks confused, probably wondering why I wanted to be rescued from Brian. This should’ve been an opportunity to have him notice me. But I didn’t want him to notice me. Not anymore at least.
“Well I’ll get back to my date,” Brianna chirps walking away and leaving Brian and I alone.
My eyes glued to her back, glaring at her short black dress. I felt the familiar sting of jealousy as she referred Kade as her
date.
Her dress was way more revealing than mine, yet he didn’t tell her anything. What a hypocrite.
I clenched my fists tightly, my nails biting into my palm.
“Something tells me you don’t like my company as much,” Brian jokes and his words take my attention off of Kade and
Brianna.
I looked over at Brian. I could see why I had a huge crush on him before. He was handsome, curly hair with ends dusting just above his thick brows, dark gaze and just the perfect straight nose.
Too bad my crush went down the drain the moment Kade came along. Now those features weren’t attractive to me anymore. I fancied blue eyes, dark hair and the most softest looking set of lips to ever belong to a guy.
I can just imagine what soft lips like that can do to me. Where they’ll touch and taste.
“No, it’s not like that,” I lied smoothly, forcing my lips into a tiny smile to reassure him. I felt bad that I was basically ignoring his presence.
“Just never been to a bonfire before,” I whispered looking around. So many teens looked wasted already. I didn’t want to be a part of this anymore.
“There’s a first for everything,” Brian chuckles, stepping closer to me. The guy didn’t seem to know what personal space was.
Awkwardly stepping away, I nodded. I let out a visible breath of relief when Colby finally gets here. His presence alone makes me relax. Until he opens his damn mouth.
“Flirting going smoothly?” Colby’s words came out like a joke but I knew it was anything but a joke. His eyes pin on Brian as he awaited his reaction.
I will make sure to give him a wedgie for putting me into a more awkward situation.
Brian shocks me when he scratches his flustered looking cheek. Chuckling he looks away from me awkwardly. “Why don’t we go join the others?” He suggested, probably needed to get out of the suffocating awkward tension.
He leaves Colby and I, walking away with shoulders hunched in defeat. As soon as he’s out of hearing range Colby swings a heavy arm over my shoulder and tugs me closer.
“Mission to get his attention accomplished. The guy couldn’t keep his eyes off you,” Colby snorted. “Seriously you should pay me for even suggesting the dress.”
“The only payment you’ll get is my fist colliding with your gut,” I pull out of his hold and turn to him. I scowled. “Why did you leave me to fend for myself with the overly chirpy twins?” I growled crossing my arms over my chest.
Colby looks down at me sheepishly. “I thought I’d give you and Brian some space so he could make his move without feeling awkward with having me there,” He admitted, scratching his head.

He shrugs. “And besides that’s what we were aiming for. To get his attention alone remember?”

My glare intensified. I wanted to tell him that I didn’t want Brian’s attention, I wanted Kade’s. But I bit my tongue and looked away from him.
Tightening my hold around my body I mumble. “I shouldn’t have worn the dress. In fact, I shouldn’t have come here,” I whispered looking at Brianna flirt with Kade. I didn’t like the feeling of jealousy.
Her fingers trace down his cheek and I wanted to be the one to do that. I found myself fighting the urge to go over there and rip her hands away from him.
“What? Are you crazy, this was the best opportunity to have Brian latch onto you!” Colby exasperated.
“Yeah maybe I am crazy,” I said softly.
Crazy to think he’d ever want me. Maybe he really was being protective in a brotherly way and not the way I hoped.
Maybe I read all his signals wrong.
Just then, Kade’s eyes lift from Brianna and they settle on me. I felt myself squirm under his heavy gaze.
Brianna who noticed his attention had drifted to me, looks over and waves me over. “Come over you two. We’re about to start a drinking game!”
