Chapter 472 Speaking Terms

Chapter 472 Speaking Terms
AMELIA

Six months have passed.

They've been peaceful and for the most part, quiet. Tremendously busy, but I'm used to that part now. Working alongside Damien is the best part about it. I get to be with him all day and make sure that he isn't exerting himself. He has a lot more work now; he had to take over Ethan's duties. Theo helps, but there are certain things only Damien can handle. When Ethan was here, he took care of it, but he's been gone for half a year and there's no one capable enough to replace him. I think that deep down, Damien doesn't want anyone to take over Ethan's job, but he'll never admit it out loud. I help him whenever I can. There's a lot I still don't understand, but I'll get there.

It's only a matter of time.

He doesn't ever ask me to go home when there are people coming over to meet with him. We never talked about what happened with Ash, but it changed a lot of things. I gained some respect after I killed him. I see it in the way people look at me whenever we're at social events. It's empowering.

As a result, he isn't too concerned about my safety. It's liberating, and it has brought us closer together, that's for sure. I'm still his secretary in many ways, but that's only because we still haven't found a secretary, but we're in no hurry. I'm taking care of that, and none of the candidates were suitable. I personally interviewed all of them. It's an enormous responsibility, and I've become an expert at figuring out what people's intentions are. Do they need the job or do they simply plan on getting lucky in any way they can?

I know all the tell-tale signs. I've been there.

Damien made sure to get rid of all his enemies, and he began with Jack Huntington. No one was shocked when he was found dead in his home at the age of fifty-seven. In fact, they were expecting it. After what he did, no one wanted anything to do with him. No one wanted another Ash Rockford. The Huntingtons did not seek revenge. They buried their father and resumed with their lives. If they hadn't, they'd be dead too.

The worst is finally behind us.

Theo enters the office. She's smiling broadly. "Penelope gave birth yesterday. I just got off the phone with Ethan. It's a healthy baby boy."

I glance at Damien to see how he's taken the news. He rarely mentions Ethan. It's like he was never a part of his life. In a way, it was essential for him to heal, not just physically, but mentally. Theo doesn't really bring him up either. Occasionally, but not always. This was unexpected, so I'm not sure of how he's going to react.

He shifts uncomfortably and says, "I'm glad to hear that, Theo." He looks back down at the records before him, a crease forming between his brows. Theo looks over at me and I smile and nod. I'm happy to hear that the baby is alright. I hope they're both very happy.

Her smile falters and she gives him a look. "You're not going to ask me what they named your nephew, Damien?"

He pinches the bridge of his nose. I can tell this conversation is exhausting him. He asks, "What have they named him?"

She smiles again. "Damien. Damien Gabriel Keller. His hair is as black as coal, he's a dream to look at."

This delights him. He's trying not to show it, but he's not impervious to this news. I see it in his eyes, there's a possibility. Theo sees it too, and she winks at me. She walks out, closing the door softly behind her.

After a beat, I ask him, "Are you going to pay them a visit?" The last I heard, they were right here in the city. Ethan took his part of the fortune and decided to stay. He opened a restaurant and a few clubs around the city. That's what Theo told us.

Ethan never tried to reach out to him, but that could be because he knows Damien won't budge. There's never been any talk of reconciliation, but Theo has expressed her interest in trying to unite them and I think this was a good start. It's amazing that Ethan named his son after Damien. It's such an honor.

He says, "I don't know. I might send them a gift." He turns to look at me. "Will you take care of that for me?"

"No," I say with a smile. "I've got a lot on my hands. You're going to have to do it yourself."

He shakes his head, but he's not at all upset by my teasing. I'm being serious, though. Ethan made the first move. It's entirely up to Damien now. Again, there's hope. This is the perfect opportunity for this feud to end. I doubt things will return to normal, it's not like Ethan will work here again, but they could be on speaking terms.

That would be great.
