Chapter 164
ISABELLA’S P.O.V.
With Tim gone, I knew I had to act fast. It was difficult trying to maneuver myself into getting the bobby pin I always kept in my hair. Once I managed to get it free, I worked on freeing myself. It hurt like hell and my wrists were sore but I needed to get it done. I wasn’t sure how much time I had before Peter came back.
By the time I managed to get my wrists free, I was relieved. I still couldn’t get out of the room but at least I could prepare for when he inevitably came in. The room was completely empty save for a few pipes lying on the ground. I rushed to pick one of them up when I heard a loud gunshot. Fear gripped my heart and shock followed. I stood there wondering what the hell had just happened. Who was shot and who fired the gun?
I heard footsteps coming towards me so I hid behind the door and waited. I tried to even out my breathing but my hands were shaking slightly. The lock came next and once the door flew open, I struck. I swung the pipe as hard as I could but it was stopped mid-air.
“Do you want to take my head off?” It took me a second to realize that Matteo was the one that spoke. The pipe fell from my hands and I immediately wrapped my arms around him. He wasted no time in holding me.
Relief poured through my veins. If he was here, that meant Enzo was too. I was immediately brought back to the gunshot I heard a few seconds ago and pulled back. “Where is Enzo?”
“He is good, he is outside with the police.”
I stilled. “What the hell is the police doing here?”
“I don’t know, someone called them over here. Lorenzo shot at Peter but he didn’t kill him. They are outside right now answering questions. As per the law, they have to take him into the station. He did fire at an officer of the law.”
“That’s absurd, he kidnapped me.”
Matteo just simply shrugged and gestured for me to move in front of him. He led me out of the building to where the officers were standing with Enzo and Peter. They came up to me with a blanket but I shrugged it off. I just needed my husband. I went to Enzo first, he looked a little annoyed at being handcuffed but he was otherwise fine. I brushed a strand of hair away from his face and kissed him slowly.
When I pulled back, his eyes ran over my body slowly settling on my cheek. “He hit you, didn’t he?”
“It doesn’t matter,” I tried to brush it off but he wouldn’t let it go.
“I should have shot him in the heart when I could.”
“You would be in more trouble than you are now,” I deadpanned. “What happens now? Are they going to send you to jail?”
“I’ll be fine,” he assured me but I didn’t believe him. “This will not hold anywhere. I will be let off the hook and the bastard will be in jail although I’d prefer he was six feet under.”
I couldn’t stop my lips from quirking up at the corner. “You sure know how to make an appearance Lorenzo.”
He just shrugged and I reluctantly pulled away from him. I walked over to Peter who was on the other end of the lot also handcuffed. Someone was treating the gunshot wound on his shoulder as they waited for an ambulance. No one said a word to me as I moved over but I could feel their eyes on me. His lips quirked up in a smile and I shot him one back before punching him as hard as I could in the nose. An officer immediately rushed over to lead me away but I held up my hands to show that I meant no harm. I had done what I needed to already.
“You’re going to rot in hell, Peter, I will fucking make sure of it,” I snarled before storming off. I could see Enzo trying and failing to hide a smile and I flipped him off. “I’ll have Samson meet you at the station.”
“Meet me, mia cara, he will meet us there. You have to give your own statement as well, remember?”
I cursed. As if the day couldn’t get any worse.
I spent more time at the station than I would have liked. Mac came in as well after returning from the hospital where a tox screen had been done on him. He was as pissed off at the officer as I was. It was obvious they were asking bullshit questions so as to keep Peter out of jail. Samson was quick to clock that and demanded for a new officer to take our statements.
By the time we were finally allowed to leave, the sun was already setting. Enzo was spending the night in jail for shooting an officer. I wasn’t sure how long he was going to be in there but Samson said it was unlikely he would be out until it went to a hearing first. The closest he could estimate for that was two weeks. I wasn’t sure how I felt about it but I knew damn well that I wasn’t happy.
Matteo drove us back home in complete silence. I wasn’t sure how to explain to Leo that once again his father was in jail. Was it always going to be like this? Was it going to be one issue after the other? I couldn’t believe it, I didn’t want to think about it, I just wanted things to be over.
“Isabella.” A soft tap on my shoulder had me snapping back to reality and I realized we were already at the house. I gave Mac a small smile and allowed him help me out of the car. “Listen, I’m sorry I couldn’t keep you safe.”
“It doesn’t matter, you did your best.”
“You could have been hurt.”
“My life is in danger every single day, Mac. Being alive is a risk for me. You did your best and it ended out well- at least for most of us. Right now, I just want to climb in bed and pretend like my husband isn’t in jail, okay?”
He nodded slowly.
“Can you explain to Leo please? I don’t think I can do it.”
“Of course, whatever you want.”
“Thank you,” I whispered, squeezing his hand once before walking away.
