Chapter 159
ISABELLA’S P.O.V.
Lorenzo took me hard and fast and by the time he was done, we were both worn out and spent. We lay in bed for the entirety of the morning. His head lay on my chest while I ran my fingers gently through his hair. No words were exchanged but I hoped my presence was enough to let him know that I was there for him and by his side no matter what.
I was yet to clean his shoes and they lay there staring at my face like a beacon. I wanted to get to it but that would have meant dragging myself out of Lorenzo’s embrace. He still hadn’t told me what was wrong and I tried to remind myself that he wouldn’t do anything to hurt me or Leo. He was a protector, that was who he was.
“We should get breakfast,” Enzo said finally and I hummed. I felt rather than saw him smile as he pulled himself out of bed and pulled me with him. We were both stark naked and if I was being honest, I didn’t mind staying that way.
He helped me into an oversized shirt that belonged to him and some basketball shorts. We walked down the stairs hand in hand. Everyone was already seated at the table, I tried to ignore them and put a simple smile on my face. What happened last night was between Enzo and I, no one else deserved to be a part of it.
“Are you alright?” Matteo asked as I took the seat next to him and I nodded. He stared at me with narrowed eyes and dropped his voice to a whisper. “I heard someone come in late last night. You wouldn’t happen to know what that is about, would you?”
I shook my head. “We were all in bed last night. Lorenzo was with me the entire time.”
“I’m not the police, Isabella, you don’t have to lie to me.”
I wanted to tell him, he was my friend but the less he knew the better. I turned away from him and crossed my arms over my chest. “Maybe it was the wind because everyone was in the house.”
He exhaled deeply and turned away knowing that I had zero plans of budging. We enjoyed breakfast together and I tried to ignore the obvious tension. We weren’t talkers, but meals always had a certain air to them. It was light and joyful but today there was an unspoken tension. Even Leo who was always talking about something stayed silent.
We ate in complete silence and by the time it was over, I was more than ready to leave. I was making my way up the stairs when I heard a knock on the door. Enzo stiffened slightly. If I wasn’t watching him, I would have missed it. He started to rise but judging by how terse he was, I figured it was a better idea if I opened the door.
I pulled it open and was shocked to see a policeman standing there. Peter was behind him looking furious. I couldn’t help but raise a brow at his comical expression. His face was bright red and his eyes were wide with rage and murder.
“I am starting to think that you like being here,” I drawled crossing my arms over my chest. “Is there something that I can help you with, again?”
“I just have a few questions. Can I come inside?”
“No,” I said simply. “What do you want?”
“Where were you last night? And where was your husband?” he asked but I stayed silent. I raised a brow in his direction prompting for more of an explanation or else I wasn’t speaking. “You can either answer here or you can answer in the station.”
“Here or the station, my lips remain sealed until I know what the hell you are questioning me for.”
“Someone set fire to Peter’s driveway yesterday and left a dead animal carcass on the front porch.”
My brows rose in shock and I managed to hide my smile. I couldn’t believe that Enzo did something like that especially with the scrutiny that was already on us. What the hell was he thinking?
“You should think of investing in some security cameras, Peter, you might have been able to catch whoever did it if you had some. I would be more than happy to recommend a friend of mine to you. He is the best of the best.”
He growled. “I don’t need your stupid advice. I had cameras but they were disabled. Your bastard of a husband did it.”
The other policeman turned to him and I watched them whisper in hushed breaths about staying silent and asking questions. I watched in amusement and glanced over my shoulder at everyone else. They had left the dining table and were standing in the living room as they listened to the ongoing conversation.
I let them argue for a while before clearing my throat. “This has been amusing to watch but unfortunately, I have things to do and I do not have the time to spend watching grown adults bicker like children.”
I made to shut the door but the officer stopped me.
“Get your hands off my door, now,” I said slowly and he gave me a small smile before pulling a piece of paper out of his pocket.
“I have a warrant to search every building owned by Lorenzo DeLucia starting with his home. I really didn’t want to have to do this but you are obligated to let me in.”
Fear gripped at my heartstrings. I remembered the bloody and dirty shoes lying in the middle of our room. If only I had gotten to them yesterday. There was so much incriminating evidence in this house. If they walked in, it was game over. I hesitated but Peter had a smirk on his face, he knew he had me in a tight position. There was nothing I could do.
“If I may, cara mai,” I heard Enzo speak from behind me. I turned to him and he gave me a look that was clearly asking for me to trust him. I let out an exasperated sigh before stepping to the side. He took one look at the warrant and hummed. “What judge would order that for no reason?”
“Judge Mathers and my father go way back,” Peter bragged crossing his arms over his chest. “Move, Lorenzo, we have the right to detain you for obstruction of justice if you don’t let us search.”
“If you want to search then be my guest but I would have to take you to my owned buildings.”
“What the fuck are you talking about?” Peter spat. “Your house is behind you.”
“This house is in my son’s name- Leonardo DeLucia. Your warrant is to search the buildings owned by me. As we speak, there are only three- a club in downtown Manhattan, an event center in the middle of the city and a warehouse on the outskirts that has been abandoned for well over a year.”
My eyes widened as he delivered the words with slow ease and comfort. Peter looked like he had just chewed on glass.
“You bastard,” he snarled as he pushed Enzo back hard. “You did this, you lying cheat.”
“Get your hands off me, Peter, or I will make you,” Enzo warned. “If you want to check my buildings, be my guest but you will not be starting here. Get a warrant to check my son’s house and then we can speak. Until then, goodbye.”
