Chapter 153

LORENZO’S P.O.V.

I was left to sit in the interrogation room for forty five minutes before the door finally opened. I was used to the tactic: make the person sweat a little, make them uncomfortable then come in and ask questions. What they didn’t understand was I practically invented that tactic. I was able to survive being cut and beat up at eighteen years old, I could handle a little sweat from the cops.

Samson walked in and I rolled back my shoulders in relief. He was the best at what he did, with him involved, there was no way I was going to jail. He made his way over to me and backed the camera so no one would be able to read his lips. He dropped his voice to a whisper.

“This better be good because you are cashing in your favor,” he said and I shrugged.

He owed me a favor from a while ago. His wife had borrowed money from some loan sharks and I paid it off for his legal services. It was a hundred grand in exchange for his legal counsel five times. This was the third of those five.

“What do they have on you?” he asked and I shrugged. I had no idea. I made sure to clear the vicinity and I left no prints. “We will find out soon enough.”

As if on cue, the door opened and I was shocked to see Peter and his partner. Peter had a smirk on his face as he took me in. I couldn’t imagine the joy coursing through his veins as he stared at the cuffs. I simply matched his smirk with one of my own and that was enough to have it falling.

“Innocent people don’t lawyer up, DeLucia,” Peter goaded but I didn’t respond. I was leaving the banter to him and Samson, I didn’t have the energy for all of that. “Let’s make this quick and easy. You just confess to killing Benito and we can cut you deal, twenty five to life instead of the death penalty.”

“How did you become a cop if you’re so stupid?” I asked and he gritted his teeth. “I didn’t kill Benito.”

He slid a picture over to me and I stared at it blankly before looking up at him. “I can’t recognize guns on sight, Peter.”

“It is registered in your name and it was found at the crime scene. It was thrown into the bushes. It had your prints on it.”

“A gun was stolen from me a while back, I only have to assume that is it.”

He hummed. “Did you file a report?”

“You can ask the commissioner about that.”

It was a huge bluff, one I knew the commissioner would have no choice was to make work. I had too much on him for him to let it slide. Peter growled in frustration. He hated not being in charge and it was clear that despite being the one in handcuffs, I was in charge here.

“How does it feel finally being on the right side of the law?” he asked but before I could respond, Samson cut in.

“Is there a question in there, officer, or do you enjoy harassing my clients? You still haven’t given a basis for arresting him.”

“His gun was found nearby!”

“A gun that was stolen a while back besides, according to the pictures I saw earlier, the victim clearly was not shot. You have nothing to hold him on. This is merely circumstantial evidence.”

“I will get something, you just wait and see. If we got the gun, we will get more.”

“I would hope so, we would hate to see an innocent man imprisoned. Unless you actually have something, I would like to leave with my client.”

“We can hold him for forty eight hours,” Peter spat and Samson pursed his lips because even he knew that he was right. “Enjoy your time in a holding cell, Lorenzo. I’m sure your wife would find a way to make the visits. We could do with some eye candy around here.”

I gritted my teeth. It took all of my self control to not punch him in the face. He was clearly goading me and trying to find something to hold me on. Samson leaped to his feet and straightened his jacket.

“Your supervisors will be hearing about this,” he said but Peter simply flipped him off and walked out.

Once the door was shut, Samson turned back to me. I ran my hand through my hair in frustration. When I got out of here, I was going to kill Peter, I was going to take my time doing it and I was going to enjoy it.

“I know that look,” Samson warned. “Keep your murderous thoughts to a minimum until we get you off the hook for this one.”

“I will be off the hook soon.”

He rolled his eyes before whispering. “Did you really tell the commissioner that it was missing?”

I shook my head. “Give him a call and he will make it happen. Was Isabella here?”

“Yes, they asked her a few questions and she wanted to see you but they wouldn’t let her,” he explained and I tried to ignore the feeling of disappointment. “I cannot make them let you out before forty eight hours but I will see what I can do. Do not answer any questions and for the love of God, do not hit any of the officers.”

“I won’t if they behave,” I ground out and Samson muttered something about God granting him patience before walking out.

The room went quiet and the reality of my solace hit me all at once. I usually liked solace, I had gotten grown up with it but ever since having a family, it was almost impossible to get that quiet. I was used to the noise in the house, the squeals and the yelling, this felt almost uncomfortable.

I simply lay my head on the table and stayed like that for what felt like hours until the door opened. I expected to see someone ready to take me to the holding cell but instead, I saw Peter.

“Your lawyer just left,” he said and I raised a brow. “Now, we can talk, man to man, off the grid. Whatever you say here will not be used against you, I swear it.”

“Do you just assume that everyone is stupid because you are?” I asked in the most innocent tone I could muster.

“I’m offering you a chance, Lorenzo. You want to see your wife and son again, don’t you? Give me something to work with. Tell me how you killed him and why. We can play it as self defense.”

“I did not kill him,” I leaned back and crossed my arms over my chest. “If you want to talk to me, do it with my lawyer present. If not, I have nothing to say to you so get the fuck out of here.”
