Chapter 44 'Taking a walk'
Chapter 44 'Taking a walk'
Raze
I stare at Asha in shock. She stands there staring at me with her jaws dropped.
"Raze? What the fuck are you doing here?"
"Well, what are you doing here?" I pinch my brows at her.
She swallows hard, her eyes avoiding mine,"Well.. I was.. taking a walk."
I arch my brows, "Taking a walk? Here? Why?"
She scratches the back of her head, "So what? Is it bad to take a walk?"
I look at her glistening face, and heaving chest. Right, of course she was taking a walk.
"I never knew you ran while taking walks," I scoff, brushing past her.
"Now, answer my question. Why are you here?" She fires after me.
"That is none of your business. You shouldn't be here, you could get killed."
Deep down, I suspect she probably followed me here. Why she would follow me beats me already.
"What about you? Wouldn't you get killed too?"
I roll my eyes at her innocent question. Sometimes I wonder how Boss ran into her. She's just too innocent for this world, and annoying too. Always asking endless questions that have no answer to them.
"I'm a member of the underworld. I can better protect myself than you can," I suddenly turn around, and grab her arm.
"What the fuck? What did I do?" She shrieks, but I gently guide her to my front.
It's better I can see her while we're in the middle of nowhere. I can't afford being busted by the boss.
"You do know you're not supposed to leave without boss's permission, right? What if something happens to you?" I glance at her ginger auburn hair.
She shrugs her shoulders,"I'm a strong girl. I can do anything."
I let out a sigh, and shake my head. Boss must have a hard time dealing with her.
She abruptly stops, then looks over her shoulder, "You swear you're loyal to your boss, right?"
I pause, momentarily dazed by the sudden question. I blink a few times, processing it.
"Huh?"
"You heard me."
"What kind of question is that? Of course I'm loyal to him. Now, keep walking," I gently shove her forward.
"Hmm," she mutters something under her breath, then keeps on walking.
She suddenly stops again, making me trip, but I'm quick to catch myself before I fall on her.
"Are you sure you don't know about any snitch? I think there's a snitch among us," she turns around, staring intently at me.
Her eyes seem to have so much power. Sometimes, I caught myself just staring at those heterochromic eyes with wonder. Not only are they an unusual color combination, they're fucking beautiful.
"Did you hear me?" Her voice snaps me back to the present.
The tips of her ears are turning pink, and her face is scrunched up in a cute way.
I shake my head to dispel those thoughts.
"I don't know if there's a snitch. I don't have time to start snooping around others when I have much more important work to do."
She gives me a cute frown, then narrows her eyes. She opens her mouth to say something, but presses it into a thin line instead. She exhales, her shoulders drooping, and she turns around.
"I'm so tired of all of this. I can't wait to have a normal life again," she mumbles under her breath.
I resist the urge to chuckle. Not when you're involved with a Lycan lord. Your life will never be normal when you've come in contact with Auren. Not just possible.
"Were you following me?" I ask after a moment of silence.
She shakes her head, "I told you I was taking a walk."
"That sounds so hard to believe."
"That's up to you," she hisses.
I give up, and continue walking in silence. Engaging in a conversation seems pointless.
We walk for a few more minutes before getting to the path leading us back home.
"This wasn't the path I took when I ventured on my little walk," she snorts in disbelief.
"Who takes a walk in somewhere they're unfamiliar with?" I ask, feeling a little irritated.
"Always trying to explore," she responds with a nervous laughter.
She wouldn't be able to lie if her life depended on it.
We arrive at the gate, and I push it open, "Next time, you shouldn't just follow someone like that. You don't know where they're headed. You could get in danger."
She glances at me over her shoulder, then walks away without giving me a response.
Hm, rude.
I walk towards the house, relieved that no one actually saw where I went. I doubt Asha followed me there, she probably got lost along the way, and was looking for a way out. So I shouldn't bother about her.
I hurriedly go inside to meet with the boss. He must have been searching for me for a while now. I wouldn't want to incur any of his wrath on me.
I head to his office as soon as I enter inside. Arriving there, I knock once, then go in.
He's seated, his attention on some dollar bills. Stacks of cash fill his table, and some bags are open near his table, all of them filled with cash.
"Where have you been? I asked Aidan to get you, but you weren't around."
"I'm sorry, boss, I stepped out for some fresh air," I lie.
If he finds out that was a lie, he could have my insides.
He raises his head to look at me, his eyes staring through me. For a moment, I feel I might have been caught.
"Don't do that again. Next time, I won't look for you," he hisses, returning his attention to the dollar bills.
"Yes, boss."
"Apparently, there's a fucking mole among my men. I want you to find out who that is, and bring him to me."
"A mole? What happened?"
"Orion wants Asha back because of she's been accused of killing her trashbag stepfather."
I tilt my head slightly, "Oh?"
"Somehow, they had someone from this place tell them she lives with me. On a normal day, Orion wouldn't have known she lives with me, right?" He glances at me again, then returns his attention to the wad of cash in his hands.
My heart skips multiple beats, "Wh- what? That's.. crazy."
"Find who that bastard is. Be quick about it. You know you're the one I trust most."
I cross my fingers, "Yes, boss."
"Good. You can go."
I nod, then walk out of his office. Once I'm out, I breathe a sigh of relief.
Good thing he didn't find out.
"Oh well, let's go catch a mole," I chuckle, straighten myself, and walk away.
