Chapter 45 Chapter 44

Chapter 45 Chapter 44
Evelyn.

Amaris listened attentively, her eyes filled with shock and then surprise before understanding dawned on it. "You tried coming to the mines and on your way, this happened?" She asked and I nodded, closing my eyes briefly at the memories that assaulted my head.

"You shouldn't have left the palace in the first place, knowing how sick you were, why are you stubborn?" She asked and I groaned, obviously embarrassed. Then she let out a sigh, gazing at me gently.

"Anyway, I'm glad you're safe... And, you should thank your stars for the wolf that saved you just in time. Or else, we would be telling a different story now." She said and a shudder coursed through my body at what would have happened. They were so close to violating me, I wouldn't have stood a chance.

"Indeed. I'm still so shaken from it." I confessed, hugging myself tighter. Amaris smiled at me, patting my back in reassurance.

"Of course you will be. It's not an ordinary thing." She said and I nodded, agreeing with her words.

"You don't know who the wolf was? No way to thank the person?" Amaris asked after a while and I shook my head, feelings disgruntled at the incident.

"No, after it dropped me, it just disappeared. I didn't even get to say thank you." I muttered despondently. "I don't even know if I'll ever even see it again." I added. Amaris moved closer to gently pat me in the back. She knew the weight of gratitude that rested upon my shoulders, the debt I felt towards the wolf that had saved my life.

"You might see it again, who knows? Don't be so downcast. When you do, be sure to thank it for saving your life." She said, smiling at me.

"I hope so." I mumbled, resting my chin on my knees. Amaris chuckled.

"Cheer up." She whispered softly, and we quickly moved to another topic. We had dinner together ans she stayed for a while, discussing random topics before she retired to the maid's quarters, leaving me alone in my tiny crib.

And so, as I lay in bed that night, my thoughts drifted back to the mysterious wolf. I had felt a deep sense of connection with it and it with me, a bond that seemed to have been forged before we even met in the forest. I couldn't explain why, but I knew that I had to find the wolf, to thank it personally for saving me from that disaster that was about to befall me. It was a debt of gratitude that I could not ignore, even if I wanted to.

I need to find that wolf.

Morticia.

The air in my chambers felt heavy with anticipation as I paced back and forth, my mind consumed by thoughts of the impending doom that awaited Evelyn. Today was the day, the day when my carefully crafted plan would come to fruition. I had spent weeks orchestrating every detail, ensuring that nothing would go awry. But now, as the minutes ticked by with no word, a knot of worry tightened in the pit of my stomach. My steps echoed on the polished marble floor as I moved towards the window, peering outside at the sunlit palace grounds. Displeased by the look, I turned into my chambers once more.

I glanced at the ornate clock on the wall, its hands moving at an agonizingly slow pace. How could it be taking so long? The men I had sent were skilled, ruthless even. They were supposed to be the instruments of Evelyn's death, the ones who would rid me of her presence once and for all. But as the seconds turned into minutes, doubt began to creep into my mind like a venomous serpent. Maybe... Just maybe? No, I couldn't think like that.

I tried to push the nagging thoughts aside, reminding myself of the meticulous planning that had gone into this operation. I had chosen the perfect moment, when Evelyn would be vulnerable and unsuspecting.

But now, as the silence in my chambers grew deafening, I couldn't help but question the success of my plan. What if something had gone wrong? What if Evelyn had managed to escape the clutches of my men? The mere thought sent a surge of anger through me, fueling the fire of my determination. I had invested too much in this scheme to let it crumble now.

"Why is it taking so long?" I muttered to myself, my voice a mere whisper in my chambers. My fingers trembled as I clutched the delicate fabric of my gown, squeezing it so hard, wrinkles formed on the lace.

Unable to bear the tension any longer, I made a decision. Arranging my appearance, I stepped out of the chambers and into the large hallways, planning on going for a walk in the palace lush gardens. Perhaps the fresh air would clear my mind and offer some respite from the relentless worry that threatened to consume me.

As I stepped out into the palace gardens, a sense of unease washed over me and I darted my gaze around, trying to figure if anyone was watching me. Seeing no one, I continued on my journey. The palace grounds were quiet, except for the regular moving around of the maids and other workers of the palace. It should have been peaceful but I could barely enjoy it myself. It was as if the very air held its breath, waiting for the outcome of my plan. I walked along the path with purpose, my steps echoing in the desolate gardens my heart racing with a mix of anticipation and trepidation.

And then, as if by some twisted fate, I encountered one of the men I had sent on the mission, hiding in the shadows. He approached me cautiously, his face hidden beneath a cloak that he wore. I glanced around once more and after assuring that I was safe, I quickly hurried towards me. I could sense the tension in his voice as he spoke, his words laced with a hint of fear.

"We were unable to carry out the plan," he confessed.
