Chapter 39 Chapter 38
Alpha King Kieran.
After my slight disturbance from Morticia, I got ready to resume my duties. I finished dressing up, draping my cloak over my shoulders before stepping out of my chambers to go to my study. The second my legs hit the corridor, I was immediately flanked by my guards, immediately surrounding me as I walked along.
The pain that seemed to be a constant companion this past few months had disappeared and I felt at peace for the first time in a long time. The reason isn't so far fetched. It's because of Evelyn. Something about her made me both restless and calmed me simultaneously.
The memory of her porcelain skin beneath my touch, her breathless gasps, and the fire that had ignited in her eyes played like an enchanting melody in the recesses of my mind. I had been unable to have enough of her, getting losts in the sounds she made while I thrust into her. I had lost count of how many times I had her last night, but every time I saw her splayed on the bed exhausted and panting, desire would slash hard inside me and I would throb again, needing to bury myself inside her once more.
The night we had shared, cloaked in shadows and secrecy, defied all rationality. It was a transgression against my own rules, a maddening dance with temptation. I had tasted the forbidden fruit, and now, its sweetness lingered on my lips, a tormenting reminder of what I could never truly possess.
And, as if that wasn't enough, just like in the Alpha king's meeting, her wolf had called out to me when it was all over and I had been unable to resist the silent plea. Even while she slept, I tried to stay away but it proved unsuccessful as my wolf howeled within me, causing me to move nearer.
I spent a great deal of the remaining hours of the night watching her as she slept, looking so perfect, her lips slightly parted and her eyelid tightly shut and her body bearing imprints of my possession and ownership. It had filled me with some heady feeling of some kind and it was struggle to contain my desires. If she hadn't disappeared when I woke up this morning, I'm sure I would have taken her again this morning. I was beginning to get addicted to her and for someone like me, it is not a good thing. I should know better.
Actions like this would only bring me to my ruin, as it have always done. I arrived at my study and started to settle into the day's duties when my thoughts were interrupted by the arrival of a guard, who informed me that Duke Ethan had requested an audience. Duke Ethan? What is he doing here? Another unexpected twist to an already tumultuous day. I sat down on the chair, pushing back from the desk, my mind now shifting to matters of diplomacy and alliances, leaving the haunting memories of the night with Evelyn behind—temporarily.
"Call him in." I ordered and he nodded, briskly walking away. I picked up a number of scrolls, rolling them open as I waited for my unexpected guest. Just as i was about dipping a quill in ink, a knock came in the door and it was pushed open, Duke Ethan walking in. I spared him a glance before going back to my work at hand.
"Your majesty." He greeted perfunctorily, his voice sounding strained as he walked deeper into the study.
"And, what do I owe this unexpected visit?" I groaned, my voice low.
"Forgive my impertinence, your majesty. But I need your help." Ethan said, sounding desperate. I paused, staring at him as I raised my brow. On a closer look, I noticed just how distressed he was, worry lines that I've never seen before visible on his face. I gestured to the chair in front of me, motioning for him to sit down before continuing with what he has to say. He murmured his thanks before settling on the chair and I leaned back, watching him intently.
"So, what is it?" I asked, cocking my head to the side.
"Well, the thing is... I have found my mate but she doesn't want to have anything to do with me." He replied gravely, sounding disconcerted.
I raised a brow, thinning my lips. "Really?" Well, what else was he expecting?
"Yes, really." He added.
"And... How does it concern me?"
"She works at a maid in your castle. Amaris Silvermoon, my mate. I saw her once and tried to her her to follow me but she refused vehemently. Even if I force her to come with me, I don't think she'll even want to have anything to do with me. I need you to help convince her to accept me."
"I'm the last person you want to ask for this kind of help." I murmured, running a hand through my hair.
"I know, but I'm desperate. I can feel myself growing weaker everyday and I fear that by the time she'll be ready to accept me, it would have been too late. I don't want that to happen." He stated.
I glanced at him, thinking about what he said. It was a really dangerous situation to be in, especially someone in a position like him. I groaned, rubbing my forehead. "I'll do my best, but I'm not making any promises. I'm not going to order her to follow you if that's what you want. You have to do that yourself.".
"I wouldn't request that, your majesty. Your offer for help is already more than enough. I'm really grateful your majesty." He said, sounding pleased. I nodded my head, brushing him off as I continued with my work. We discussed for a bit before he finally left and I threw myself into my work for a moment, needing to finish some things.
Once I felt myself getting distracted, I called on a guard.
"Your majesty." He greeted as he stood before me. I wrote for a bit, taking my time. After a while, I looked up from the scroll I was writing and gave him a pointed stare.
"Summon Amaris for me."
"Yes, your majesty."
