Chapter 99

As Maya sat in the police car, she couldn't help but think about the events that had led her to this moment. She had always been so careful, so calculated. But somehow, things had spiraled out of control.

The officer's voice broke into her thoughts. "Maya, we'll need to take you in for questioning. You'll have a chance to tell your side of the story."

Maya's mask slipped, and for a moment, her fear and desperation showed. But she quickly regained her composure. "Of course, officer. I'm happy to cooperate."

As the police car drove away from the studio, Maya's mind was racing. She knew she had to come up with a plan, and fast. She couldn't let herself get caught up in this mess. She thought about her connections, her resources. She knew people who could help her, people who owed her favors.

But as she looked out the window, Maya realized she was running out of time. The police station was just ahead, and she knew she would soon be facing the consequences of her actions.

Maya's thoughts were interrupted by the officer's voice. "Maya, we'll need to read you your rights. You have the right to remain silent..."

Maya's eyes glazed over as the officer recited the familiar words. She knew the drill. She had played this game before. But this time, it was different. This time, she was facing serious charges, and her freedom was on the line.

As the officer finished reading her rights, Maya looked up at him with a calculating gaze. She knew she had to play this carefully, to spin the story in her favor. She took a deep breath, preparing herself for the battle ahead.

The officer finished reading Maya her rights and then asked her if she understood them. Maya nodded, her expression calm and collected.

"Yes, officer. I understand my rights," she said, her voice steady.

The officer nodded and then asked her to state her name and address for the record. Maya provided the information, her voice still calm.

As they arrived at the police station, Maya was led out of the car and into the building. She was taken to a small, sterile room where a detective was waiting for her.

"Good afternoon, Maya," the detective said, his voice firm but polite. "I'm Detective James. I'll be handling your case."

Maya smiled sweetly at the detective. "Good afternoon, detective. I'm happy to cooperate."

The detective raised an eyebrow at Maya's demeanor. Most suspects were nervous or agitated, but Maya seemed almost... amused.

"Let's get started, shall we?" the detective said, pulling out a notebook and pen. "Can you tell me where you were on the night of January 10th?"

Maya thought for a moment before responding. "I was at a hotel," she said, her voice calm. "I had a photoshoot the next day, and I wanted to get a good night's rest."

The detective nodded, taking notes. "And can you confirm your alibi?"

Maya smiled again. "Of course, detective. I'm sure my team can vouch for me. We can check the hotel's records, and I'm sure they'll confirm that I was there that night."

The detective nodded, his expression skeptical. He wasn't buying Maya's story, not yet. He needed more evidence, more information.

"Let's talk about Antonio," the detective said, his voice firm. "The child you were accused of poisoning."

Maya's expression faltered for a moment, but she quickly regained her composure. "I don't know what you're talking about," she said, her voice innocent.

The detective raised an eyebrow. "Don't play dumb, Maya. We have evidence. We know what happened."

Maya's eyes narrowed, her gaze cold. "I don't know what you're talking about," she repeated, her voice firm.

The detective smiled, a small, tight smile. "We'll see about that," he said, pulling out a folder filled with evidence. "Let's take a look at this..."

The detective began to show Maya the evidence they had collected, and Maya's expression remained calm, but her eyes betrayed her. She was worried, and she knew she was in trouble.

The detective continued to present the evidence, piece by piece, and Maya's composure began to crack. She shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her eyes darting back and forth between the detective and the evidence.

"So, Maya, it seems we have a clear case against you," the detective said, his voice firm. "We have witnesses, security footage, and physical evidence that all point to your guilt."

Maya's face reddened, and she leaned forward, her voice rising. "This is all just circumstantial," she said, her tone defensive. "You can't prove I did anything."

The detective smiled, a small, satisfied smile. "Oh, but we can," he said, pulling out a key piece of evidence. "We have a witness who places you at the scene, and we have evidence that shows you had access to the poison used in the attempt on Antonio's life."

Maya's eyes widened, and she felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead. She knew she was in trouble, and she knew she had to think fast if she wanted to get out of this situation.

"I don't know what you're talking about," she repeated, trying to keep her cool.

The detective leaned forward, his eyes locked on Maya's. "Don't play games with me, Maya," he said, his voice low and menacing. "We know what happened. And we're going to make sure you pay for it."

Maya's face twisted in anger, and she felt a surge of hatred towards the detective. She knew she was trapped, and she knew she had to find a way out.

As the interrogation continued, Maya's demeanor changed from calm and collected to angry and defensive. She knew she was running out of options, and she knew she had to think fast if she wanted to save herself.

The detective's words hung in the air, and Maya's anger simmered just below the surface. She knew she was in a precarious position, and she needed to tread carefully.

"I want a lawyer," Maya said finally, her voice firm.

The detective nodded, unsurprised. "Very well. We'll arrange for one to be appointed to you."

Maya's eyes narrowed. She didn't want some public defender who would do the bare minimum. She wanted someone who would fight for her, someone who would get her out of this mess.

"I have a lawyer," Maya said, her voice cool. "I'll call him myself."

The detective raised an eyebrow. "Very well. You can make the call."

Maya pulled out her phone and dialed a number. She waited for a moment before speaking. "Frank, I need you," she said, her voice urgent. "I've been arrested, and I need your help."

Frank's voice was calm and reassuring on the other end of the line. "I'm on my way, Maya. Don't say anything else to the police until I get there."

Maya smiled, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. With Frank on her side, she knew she could get through this. She hung up the phone and turned to the detective.

"My lawyer will be here soon," she said, her voice confident. "I have nothing more to say until he arrives."

The detective nodded, his expression unreadable. "Very well. We'll wait."

The silence that followed was tense, with Maya and the detective locked in a silent battle of wills. But Maya knew she had the upper hand. With Frank on her side, she was ready to face whatever came next.

The minutes ticked by slowly as Maya waited for Frank to arrive. She sat calmly, her composure regained, while the detective watched her with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion.

Finally, the door to the interrogation room opened, and Frank walked in, his presence commanding attention. "Good afternoon, detective," he said, his voice smooth and confident. "I'm Maya's lawyer. I understand she's been arrested and is being questioned?"

The detective nodded. "That's correct. We've been discussing the evidence against her."

Frank turned to Maya and smiled. "Don't worry, Maya. I'll take care of everything."

Maya smiled back, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. With Victor on her side, she knew she was in good hands.

Frank turned to the detective. "I'd like to speak with my client privately, please."

The detective nodded and stood up. "Very well. I'll give you some time."

As the detective left the room, Frank turned to Maya. "So, what happened?" he asked, his voice low and urgent.

Maya filled Frank in on the events leading up to her arrest, including the police officer showing up at the photoshoot and the evidence they claimed to have against her.

Frank listened intently, his expression growing more serious with each passing moment. When Maya finished, he nodded thoughtfully.

"Don't worry, Maya," he said. "We'll get through this. But we need to be smart about it. We'll need to review the evidence and come up with a strategy."

Maya nodded, feeling a sense of determination wash over her. She was ready to fight this, and with Frank on her side, she knew she could beat the charges.

Frank smiled. "Let's get to work, Maya. We'll get you out of here in no time."

Together, Maya and Frank began to formulate a plan to defend her against the charges, and Maya felt a sense of hope that she hadn't felt in hours. Maybe, just maybe, she would come out of this okay after all.

Frank spent the next few hours reviewing the evidence and discussing strategy with Maya. He questioned her about every detail, trying to find any weaknesses in the prosecution's case.

As they worked, Maya's confidence grew. With Frank's expertise and guidance, she felt like she could face whatever came next.

Finally, Frank nodded, satisfied with their plan. "I think we've got a good strategy," he said. "We'll challenge the evidence and raise reasonable doubt. We'll also look into the character witnesses who can testify to your good character."

Maya smiled, feeling a sense of relief. "Thank you, Frank. I feel much better now."

Frank smiled back. "Don't thank me yet, Maya. We still have a long way to go. But I'm confident that we can get you out of this situation."

Just then, the detective returned to the room. "Time's up," he said. "We need to take Maya to booking."

Frank nodded. "I'll accompany my client."

The detective led them to the booking area, where Maya was fingerprinted and photographed. Frank stood by her side, his presence reassuring.

As the booking process was completed, Frank turned to the detective. "We'll be pleading not guilty, of course," he said. "And we'll be requesting bail."

The detective raised an eyebrow. "Bail will be difficult given the severity of the charges," he said.

Frank smiled. "We'll see about that."

The judge would ultimately decide whether Maya would be granted bail, but Frank was confident that he could make a strong case for it.
