Chapter 66 She Needs To Know They Are Okay
Cody
It has been the perfect weekend. Jasmine and I spent more time together this weekend than we have for a while. We hung out, watched films, went to the beach, ate too much, and had a lot of sex. I dread going back to work tomorrow. I wish the weekend were longer.
“Cody, if you don’t want to go back, don’t go. Find something else," Jasmine suggests as we lie in bed, naked and cuddled after another long, hot session, while everyone is out of the apartment.
“No, it's fine. I wish the weekend were longer. I'm not ready for it to end," I reply, gently caressing her back.
“You know, if you want to quit at any time, you can. If it becomes too overwhelming, we will figure it out. We always do," she replies, glancing up at me.
I reach down and kiss her softly. “It will be fine. I like my job. I am not giving it up for her. Plus, I want you to keep focusing on your studies and not worry about money.”
I refuse to let Silver’s behavior cause me to quit. It’s a good job with decent pay, and I can handle her. She’s not worth losing my job over.
“As long as you are sure, it is always an option if you start to be unhappy.”
“I know, baby girl.” I smile and brush her hair from her face.
“As much as I would love to spend the night in bed with you again, we should get ready for dinner.”
We're heading out for a date to end our weekend. Our reservation is in less than two hours. We need to shower, get ready, and drive to the restaurant, which is twenty minutes away. We want to avoid being late. Reservations are rare here because it's popular and slightly pricier than others, but I wanted to treat Jasmine.
“Good idea. You go first. If we shower together, we'll get too distracted," I laugh.
She nods in agreement and kisses me softly before climbing out of bed. I admire her beautiful naked body briefly before she puts on a dressing gown and heads to the bathroom. I smile, get out of bed, and put on some joggers. I also changed the sheets since we made a mess. She likely won’t be long in the shower as we have somewhere to go. I let Jasmine go first because she takes longer to get ready. I laid out my outfit for after my shower—something a bit more formal since we're going to a fancy place: dress trousers, shoes, and a polo neck. I don’t enjoy dressing up, but it’s necessary.
The sound of a cell ringing grabs my attention. I check mine, but it isn’t the one ringing. It must be Jasmine’s. I search for it and see her mom calling. I should answer. Jasmine won’t mind.
“Hello.”
“Cody, is Jasmine there, sweetie? I really need to talk to her.” She sounds upset.
“She is in the shower. Is everything okay?”
“Lily and her dad were in a car accident. Thankfully, neither is in critical condition, but both are hospitalized. Lily has a broken arm and stitches in her head. Her father has a broken leg, three cracked ribs, and a broken nose,” she whimpers.
Hearing those words feels like a stab to the heart. Thankfully, they aren’t critical, but Lily must be frightened.
“We will be on the next flight out of here. Do you want me to tell Jasmine? I am sure you want to get back to both of them.”
I can’t imagine the stress she is under right now.
"Could you please tell her? I need to return to Lily. You don’t have to come back; I just wanted to ensure she knew.” She sobs.
“I will tell her. We are coming. Hopefully, we can catch a flight tonight. They will be okay. I know you must be scared, but they will be okay.”
I'm trying to stay positive for her sake because, although they are not in immediate danger, she will still be worried sick.
“Thank you. Your mother is here with me.”
“We will be with you as soon as we can.”
We ended the call there. I rush to the bathroom to tell Jasmine. She is going to be just as worried as her mom.
“Why are you rushing in here? Have you changed your mind about showering alone?” Jasmine asks with a laugh.
I shake my head. “No, your mom called. We need to go home. Your dad and Lily were in a car accident. They are not critical, but they are hurt.”
“What?” she asks, completely breaking down.
“They are going to be okay, but we need to leave. I am checking for flights back tonight.”
“How do you know they are going to be okay? Are they hurt? What happened? God, Lily, she will be so scared. I should have been there.” Jasmine sobs.
I tell her what her mom told me, and we rush back to the room to get ready. Jasmine collapses onto the bed.
“What if they are not okay?”
“Jasmine, they will be fine. I promise. The next flight out of here is in two hours. It is the last one. I will book two tickets for us.”
Jasmine looks at me, overwhelmed and in shock. I quickly book the flights and pack a few belongings for each of us since she's too distressed to organize anything.
“Jasmine, we have to leave, angel. It’s time to go to the airport," I say quietly, kneeling down in front of her.
Her gaze returns to mine, her eyes and cheeks wet with tears. “T-t-they will be alright, won’t they?”
“Yes, they will. Come on, angel, we need to go. You'll be with them shortly."
I help her to her feet, ensure we have everything, and quickly rush to the car, heading directly to the airport. Jasmine gazes out the window, still crying, her knee bouncing anxiously. She won’t calm down until she’s with them. I’m trying to stay composed for her sake because my own feelings don’t matter right now. Jasmine has already been through enough.
I rest my hand on her knee. She rests hers over mine and squeezes it hard. This is going to be the longest flight of our lives. Jasmine will be scared and nervous the whole time. We will go straight to the hospital from the airport.
