Chapter 15 Chapter 15

Chapter 15 Chapter 15
Cass Winfield parked her car in the crowded school lot, the morning sun reflecting off the hood she had finally fixed. The dent the one that had sparked a chain of chaos, humiliation, and relentless attacks was gone, but the memories of that moment still lingered like a shadow in her mind. She turned off the ignition and exhaled, trying to steady herself for the day ahead.
Her thoughts drifted to Lena. She had spent the weekend with her at the supermarket and the park, and the warmth of that connection still made her chest lighter. How could I have been so selfish to worry about everyone else when I didn’t even know this girl was in my life? she thought, guilt nudging her. She made a mental note to ask Lena what school she had been attending. Next time, I’ll find out, she promised herself.
Cass opened her door and stepped out, feeling the crisp morning air. The hallways of her high school were already buzzing, the distant echoes of chatter mixing with the clatter of lockers. She tried to walk calmly, head held high, determined not to give anyone the satisfaction of seeing her flinch.
  And then she saw it.
  Marvin Woods.
Smirking. Arm wrapped possessively around Jacinta, the coach’s daughter, as they kissed with complete disregard for the world around them. No shame. No respect. Just pure arrogance.
Cass’s stomach twisted, but she shook her head, refusing to let it ruin her day. She bowed her head slightly and walked past, trying to channel all the frustration, anger, and humiliation into some semblance of composure. She wasn’t in the mood for drama. Not today. Not now.
Her focus shifted to getting to her locker, and she tried to avoid collisions with anyone. She silently prayed she wouldn’t bump into Jace. She wasn’t ready for his calm, his steady presence, his knowing eyes. She needed space, a little distance from the chaos surrounding her life and him.
And then she bumped into someone anyway.
“Oh! I’m so sorry!” she gasped, looking up.
Her eyes went wide. WHAT. IN. THE. WORLD!
Lena. Standing right in front of her, looking as dramatic and stunning as ever. Her mouth fell open, and without thinking, Cass grabbed her and hugged her tight. Relief, surprise, and sheer excitement overwhelmed her.
Lena’s hair flipped with theatrical flair as she stepped back, grinning. “Hii there! Miss me that much?”
Cass laughed, still holding a hand over her chest, heart racing with a mix of joy and disbelief. “You’re… in my school?”
Lena nodded, eyes sparkling. “Yep! New girl in class. Thought I’d surprise you.”
Cass felt a rush of warmth and relief. The day suddenly didn’t feel as heavy, as suffocating, or as impossible. Lena’s presence alone was enough to lighten the weight she had been carrying since the weekend, since Marvin’s relentless torment, since the isolation that had haunted her for months.
They walked together toward the lockers, exchanging excited whispers about the weekend, about grocery aisles, about minor chaos that somehow felt safe to share now. Cass couldn’t help but grin. Maybe Monday wouldn’t be so bad after all.
Her smile faltered slightly as she noticed Jace a few feet away, leaning against the lockers with that calm, measured presence she simultaneously wanted and feared. He caught her glance and nodded subtly, almost as if to check on her without forcing her into conversation.
Cass’s chest tightened. She wanted to rush to him, to let him know she was okay, that Lena was here, that maybe she could survive this week but she didn’t. Not yet. She needed to feel grounded first. Lena’s unexpected presence gave her a buffer, a shield, a reminder that she wasn’t entirely alone.
As they reached her locker, Lena’s eyes flicked to the far side of the hallway. Marvin. Of course, he hadn’t disappeared. He was smirking at some random group of students, clearly enjoying the attention, his ego radiating like it owned the entire space. Jacinta was on his arm, laughing a little too loudly, basking in his glory.
Cass exhaled through her nose, trying not to let it ruin her mood. Not today, she thought fiercely. Not now. I’m not letting him ruin this day. Not when Lena is here.
Jace’s eyes followed her subtly, a quiet anchor. He didn’t speak yet, didn’t intervene he simply existed nearby, steady and unwavering, a reminder that even amidst chaos, she had someone watching out for her.
Lena nudged her lightly. “Ignore them,” she whispered, a mischievous grin tugging at her lips. “We’ve got better things to do.”
Cass smiled genuinely, the tension in her shoulders easing. Maybe Monday wasn’t going to be completely disastrous. Maybe, with Lena by her side and Jace nearby, she could start to reclaim her space, her confidence, her sense of control.
The bell rang, and the hallways erupted into the usual chaos. Cass felt a flicker of determination ignite inside her. Marvin could smirk, Jacinta could flaunt, rumors could fly but today, she wasn’t going to crumble. She had allies now, even if they were new. She had a spark of strength that felt almost electric.
As she walked toward her classroom with Lena by her side, Cass Winfield finally allowed herself to hope. Maybe this week wouldn’t be a nightmare after all. Maybe, just maybe, she could survive Marvin Woods and reclaim her life, one small victory at a time.
