Chapter 77 NO WAY BACK
The tunnel stretched ahead of them like a narrow throat carved from stone. Moisture clung to the walls, seeping into Lea’s clothes as they moved quickly, their footsteps echoing despite their efforts to stay quiet. The air smelled old, like dust and rust and secrets that had been buried too long.
George led the way, one hand brushing the wall, the other gripping his gun. Billy followed close behind Lea, watching their rear. No one spoke. Every sound felt dangerous.
Lea’s pulse thudded in her ears. Her body was exhausted, but fear kept her upright. She focused on breathing, on keeping her steps steady, on not letting panic take over. She could still hear Daniel’s voice in her head, calm and cruel, as if he were standing right beside her.
After several minutes, George slowed and raised his hand.
“Stop.”
They froze.
A faint noise drifted through the tunnel. Not footsteps, but movement. Metal scraping against stone.
Billy leaned closer. “They know about the tunnel.”
George’s jaw tightened. “My father built it to escape. Daniel must have found the plans.”
Lea whispered, “Then where does it lead?”
George hesitated. “The old maintenance wing. It exits behind the estate.”
Billy shook his head slightly. “If Daniel is smart, he will have men waiting there.”
Lea swallowed. “So this is another trap.”
“Maybe,” George said quietly. “But standing still is worse.”
The sound behind them grew louder. Voices. Muffled, but real.
George turned to Lea. “When we get out, you do exactly what I say.”
She met his eyes. “I am done being the one protected without knowing why.”
His expression softened, but only for a moment. “This is not about control. It is about survival.”
Billy added, “And right now, survival means moving.”
They continued, faster now. The tunnel narrowed, forcing them into single file. Lea brushed against the wall, her shoulder scraping stone. Her breath came shallow, her chest tight.
Finally, a faint glow appeared ahead.
George reached the end first. He pressed against the door carefully, listening. Silence.
He pushed it open slowly.
They emerged into a low room filled with old equipment and broken shelves. Dust stirred as they stepped inside. The exit door on the far side was ajar.
Billy scanned the room. “Clear. For now.”
Lea barely had time to exhale before a sharp click echoed behind them.
George spun.
Too late.
The door they had come through slammed shut. Locks slid into place with a metallic snap.
Daniel’s voice filled the room through hidden speakers. Calm. Amused.
“You really thought I would let you leave so easily?”
Lea’s heart dropped.
Billy cursed under his breath. “He sealed the tunnel.”
George moved toward the door, testing it. Solid. Reinforced.
Daniel continued, “This wing was rebuilt years ago. Soundproofed. Reinforced. Perfect for conversations that should not be overheard.”
Lea felt anger surge through her fear. “You are hiding behind walls.”
Daniel chuckled. “I am standing above you. Watching.”
A screen flickered to life on the far wall. Daniel’s face appeared, illuminated by soft light. He looked relaxed, seated comfortably somewhere unseen.
George stepped forward. “You wanted me here. You have me. Let her go.”
Daniel tilted his head. “Still bargaining. You have not learned.”
Lea stared at the screen. “What do you want?”
Daniel’s eyes slid to her. “I want what was always mine.”
George snapped, “She is not a possession.”
Daniel smiled. “Neither was your empire. Yet here we are.”
Billy raised his gun toward the screen. “End this.”
Daniel laughed. “Violence from you is predictable, Billy. But pointless.”
The floor vibrated suddenly. A low hum filled the room.
Lea felt it through her feet. “What is that?”
George’s face darkened. “Gas.”
Billy swore. “Ventilation system.”
Daniel’s voice softened. “Relax. It is not lethal. Just enough to make things difficult.”
Lea’s vision swam slightly. She stumbled, and George caught her instantly.
“Lea,” he said urgently. “Stay with me.”
She nodded, forcing herself to focus. “I am here.”
Daniel watched, fascinated. “This is the part where you break, George. Where you choose.”
George looked up at the screen, fury blazing. “I will kill you.”
Daniel smiled. “Eventually. But first, you will listen.”
The hum faded. The dizziness remained, but manageable.
Daniel leaned closer to the camera. “I did not kill your father, George. I gave him a choice.”
George went still. “You are lying.”
“I am not,” Daniel said calmly. “He knew what I was planning. He could have stopped me. Instead, he chose silence. Just like you did with Lea.”
Lea’s breath caught. She looked at George. “What is he talking about?”
George’s jaw clenched. “My father believed secrets kept us safe.”
Daniel nodded. “He taught you well. Too well.”
Lea felt the weight of the words settle between them. “George?”
He did not look at her. “Later.”
Daniel continued, “Your father died knowing his silence destroyed his son. And now you are repeating the cycle.”
Billy interrupted sharply. “Enough. This ends now.”
Daniel sighed. “No. This ends when George admits the truth.”
Lea’s heart raced. “What truth?”
Daniel’s eyes locked onto George through the screen. “Tell her why you really divorced her.”
The room went silent.
Lea stared at George. “You said it was to protect me.”
George closed his eyes briefly.
Daniel smiled. “That was only half of it.”
Lea’s voice trembled. “George.”
He opened his eyes and finally looked at her. Pain flickered there, raw and unguarded. “I divorced you because I believed I would become my father.”
Her breath caught. “What does that mean?”
“I believed loving you would destroy you,” he said quietly. “That my enemies would always reach you. That one day, my silence would kill you.”
Tears burned her eyes. “So you decided for me.”
“Yes,” he admitted. “And it was wrong.”
Daniel clapped slowly from somewhere unseen. “There it is. The confession.”
Billy muttered, “This is sick.”
Daniel’s smile faded. “What is sick is pretending love does not have consequences.”
The lights flickered again. Doors began to unlock one by one along the walls.
George straightened. “What are you doing?”
Daniel’s voice sharpened. “Giving you a chance.”
Armed men began to enter the room from multiple sides.
Daniel spoke calmly. “Walk out alone, George. Leave Lea and Billy here. I will let them live.”
Lea grabbed George’s arm. “No.”
Billy raised his gun. “Try it.”
George did not move.
Daniel added softly, “Or stay. And watch them die.”
Lea’s chest tightened. “George, do not listen.”
George looked at her, his eyes filled with something fierce and broken. “I will not lose you.”
She shook her head. “You will if you walk away.”
Daniel watched, patient. “Decide.”
George stepped forward.
Billy shouted, “George!”
Lea felt the world tilt. “Do not do this.”
George turned back to her. His voice was steady. “I promised no more secrets.”
He leaned close, pressing his forehead to hers briefly. “No matter what happens next, remember this. I never stopped loving you.”
Then he stepped away.
And the doors slammed shut between them.
Lea screamed his name as the walls sealed, separating them completely.
Billy grabbed her as she lunged forward. “Lea!”
The room went silent except for her breathing, ragged and broken.
Daniel’s voice echoed one last time. “The game is almost over.”
And somewhere beyond the walls, George Robert walked alone into the dark.
