CHAPTER 146: SHE REMEMBERED!
CHAPTER 146: SHE REMEMBERED!
~Grey’s pov~
“A little accident. And she wants to see her baby.” I rolled my eyes. My youngest sister always teased me about being a mummy’s boy. “Daddy intends to call you so this is just a heads up. You should come home. We haven’t seen you since forever.”
“I was home last year.”
“At the beginning of the year,” Angel corrected.
I winced. I hadn’t been to my family house in nineteen months. I massaged my forehead.
“Yeah. I just need to sort out a few. I’ll be there. Next month.”
“Next week,” Angel murmured.
“Next two weeks.” That was, hopefully, enough time for Mira’s mother to have recovered. Even if she didn’t get her memory by then, she should be able to move.
Angel huffed a defeated sigh.
“Alright. Are you good?”
“Sure. Bye, brother.”
I laughed as the call came to end. All three Anderson siblings might be cut out of the same material but we were very different. I opened the door of my car without getting out. Something Olivia told me weeks back returned to haunt me. I unlocked my phone and dialled a number I promised never to contact again. A feeling I knew was mutual between me and that fucker who almost ruined Mira.
The phone rang uninterruptedly. I tried again two more times and on the fourth ring, James picked. None of us spoke for a while. Tension thickened the air and I shut the car door, locking myself in.
“What do you want?” I chose to go with the truth. “Mira’s mother showed up at our apartment, bruised and battered…”
“If you’re implying that I had anything to do with this, then you’re wrong,” James cut me off. “I met her mother just twice and she was perfectly okay on both occasions.”
Anger flooded my body. I gripped the phone tighter. So, Olivia hadn’t been lying.
“What did Mrs Evans want?”
“To know how Mira was doing.”
My eyes twitched. “And you didn’t think to tell her that?”
“Have a good day, Grey. Don’t call this number again.”
The call ended and I tossed the phone to the passenger seat. I punched the steering wheel and groaned. James Rivera was still a motherfucker and I, Grey Anderson was nowhere close to finding out the culprit.”
~MIRA’S POV~
Lisa was at the reception when I walked in. I watched my friend describe me and Grey to the nurse for a short while before rushing to engulf her in a hug.
“Mira.” Lisa hugged me back. “I’m so sorry.”
“For what?” I asked.
Lisa had told me about the impromptu work trip. Her absence had hurt but life didn’t revolve around only me. My eyes were dry as a desert as I stared into my best friend’s teary ones. I would not cry again. My mother was alive, that was more than most people would get.
I nudged my bestfriend with my shoulder and wiggled my brows. “How’s Patrick? You look beautiful, Lisa.”
“You look better.”
We both laughed. Sliding my hand into Lisa’s elbow, I guided her towards the hallway.
“Patrick is fine. Since the app got back on playstore, he has been busy with new updates and fixing some bugs. Sometimes, I wish things would return to how they were, you know?”
“I guess so,” I mumbled.
Working with Grey gave me the privilege of seeing him whenever I wanted, his business trips had reduced but sometimes it didn’t feel enough.
“I feel that way when Grey gets so busy. Sometimes, I wish he wasn’t the CEO and just a regular staff who came home early.”
“How’s Grey by the way? He told me about your mum.” Lisa’s smile fell and we stopped moving.
I didn’t know what Grey told my best friend but I was guessing he omitted the part of my mother’s memory loss since Lisa hadn’t mentioned it.
Lisa grabbed my shoulders and asked, “Are you okay, Mira?”
I was okay, at least I was trying to be. They had to stop treating me like I was a porcelain doll.
“Yeah, thanks for coming.”
Lisa threw her arms around me in a slack hug. “Of course I’ll be here. We are sisters from different mothers.”
A tear fell down from my eyes, then another. I hugged my best friend turned sister tight.
“It’s okay. Mama will be fine. She is strong, Mira. She will be good in no time.”
Pulling away from the hug, I nodded. If anyone knew my mother as well as I did, it was Lisa. We continued down the hallway till we were at the door of my mother’s room. I motioned with my head for Lisa to go in first. She opened the door and stepped in. I waited a second or two more, then followed.
My mother was in bed. Her bruises were a dull purple colour. Lisa threw a worried look at me and I forced a smile to my lips. I would be riddled with questions later but for now, I was just glad to have a companion.
We settled down on the bench beside the bed. My mother’s eyes opened and I held my breath. The doctor said her memory would return any moment so I was hopeful and scared. We maintained eye contact for some seconds before my mother looked away to Lisa.
“Lilisaaa,” my mother said, pinching Lisa’s cheeks.
I froze, as my heart broke into pieces.
