Chapter 13 - Only The Best For You
Serena blushed at his compliment, her heart fluttering. Vernon's genuine admiration made her feel like the most beautiful woman in the world. She gathered her nerves as they drove to his parents' house, wondering what kind of evening awaited them.
When they arrived, the house was even grander than she had imagined. The sprawling mansion, with its manicured gardens and ornate architecture, looked like it belonged in a movie. Vernon parked the car and walked around to open Serena's door. Taking a deep breath, she stepped out and linked her arm with his, feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety.
"Just be yourself," Vernon whispered as they approached the front door. His words were comforting, but Serena couldn't shake off the nervousness entirely.
They were greeted by a butler who led them into a lavish living room where Vernon's parents were waiting. His mother, a graceful woman with a warm smile, stood up to welcome them. His father, dignified and imposing, gave a nod of acknowledgment.
"Mom, Dad, this is Serena," Vernon introduced.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Serena," his mother said, extending her hand. Serena shook it, relieved by her kindness.
"Thank you for having me," Serena replied, trying to keep her voice steady.
Dinner was a formal affair, with an elegant table setting and a multi-course meal prepared by a private chef. Serena felt out of place at first, but Vernon’s reassuring presence helped her relax.
His parents were polite and curious about her, asking about her background and interests. She found herself opening up more than she expected, and by the time dessert was served, she felt like she was part of the family.
“Why don't we have coffee time and chat together?” asked Vernon's mother.
She felt a bit shocked by Vernon's mother's question after the dinner. “Hmm, may I have the restroom, please?” Asked Serena as she felt nervous.
She needed to clear her thoughts and let her mind rest for a while. She never felt this nervous because of a man.
When she returned because she felt okay, she overheard a snippet of conversation between Vernon and his father.
"She seems lovely, Vernon. I'm glad you brought her," his father said.
"Yes, she is," Vernon replied, and Serena's heart skipped a beat although Vernon just responded like that.
Re-entering the room, Serena was met with warm smiles. She took a seat next to Vernon, who subtly squeezed her hand. The evening continued with light-hearted conversation and laughter, and Serena began to feel more comfortable with each passing moment.
As they prepared to leave, Vernon's mother pulled Serena aside. "It was wonderful to meet you, Serena. I hope we see more of you."
"Thank you, Mrs and Mr. Johnson. I had a lovely time," Serena replied, genuinely touched by her words.
The drive back to Serena's apartment was quiet, both of them reflecting on the evening. When they finally arrived, Vernon walked her to her door.
"Thank you for tonight, Vernon. It meant a lot to me," Serena said softly.
"I should be the one thanking you for coming," Vernon responded, his eyes locking onto hers. "You made a great impression on them."
Serena smiled, feeling a surge of happiness. "Goodnight, Vernon."
"Goodnight, Serena," he replied, leaning in to kiss her cheek. His lips lingered for a moment, sending a thrill through her. As he pulled away, their eyes met, and Serena knew that this was just the beginning of something special as she thought it would happen.
The next morning, Serena woke up with a sense of elation from the previous evening. She replayed every moment in her head, smiling at the memory of Vernon’s kiss and his parents’ warm reception. It was a significant step in their relationship, and she felt closer to Vernon than ever before.
Later that day, as she was getting ready for work, her phone buzzed with a message from Vernon.
-Good morning, Serena. I had a great time last night. How about dinner tonight? Just the two of us.-
Serena's heart skipped a beat. She quickly typed her response.
-Good morning! Mr. CEO just asked me for dinner. Should I say yes?”
-I would say as you accept me. I’ll pick you up at 7. Wear something comfortable.-
The rest of the day passed in a blur of anticipation. Serena couldn’t help but wonder what Vernon had planned.
In the office, she felt more energetic than she thought. She had photo shoots and so on with her big smile so beautifully.
“You look so energetic, Serena,” said Sunny, noticing her friend being so different today.
“Oh, yes, I am. I have a big plan today. Someone asks me out.”
“Don't get caught by the paparazzi and become the attention of fake news or so on,” said Sunny, reminding her.
“I know what to do, Sunny. But thanks for paying attention to me.”
By the time she got home after work and started getting ready, she felt a mix of excitement and curiosity. She chose a simple yet elegant dress, hoping it would be suitable for whatever Vernon had in mind.
At precisely 7 PM, Vernon arrived, looking effortlessly handsome in casual attire. Serena's heart fluttered as she opened the door and saw him standing there.
"You look beautiful," he said, his eyes twinkling with admiration.
"Thank you," Serena replied, blushing. "So, where are we going?"
"It's a surprise," Vernon said with a mysterious smile.
They drove through the city, chatting about their day until they reached a picturesque park by the waterfront. The setting sun painted the sky in shades of orange and pink, casting a romantic glow over the scene. Vernon led her to a secluded spot where a cozy picnic was set up, complete with a blanket, pillows, and a basket of gourmet food.
"This is amazing," Serena said, her eyes wide with delight. "You did all this?"
"Only the best for you," Vernon replied, taking her hand and guiding her to sit down. "I wanted us to have a quiet evening together.”
She was surprised by all of sudden his act toward her, but this was what she wanted since meeting him again.
